Hey so I'm a lvl 8 vengeance pally in my campaign and I'm thinking of taking 2 or 3 points in warlock for hexblade.
Only problem is I didn't build out my charisma as much as I should have. I have 20str and 14 charisma. Would it still be worth it to drop the 2-3 lvls in hex blade as a str pally? Or should I just stick with pally?
Really like the hexblade additions like pact of the blade and improved pact of the blade. Also I'm playing descent into avernus. So a magic wpn might be rare and pacts at lvl 3 give me a +1 wpn, and ability to attune better wpns if I find em.
Also pally is human, so going lock gives me devil sight. Only person in party w/o dark vision sucks lol.
Generally speaking it's not a bad idea, particularly since Cha is a valuable stat for paladins as well. You could focus on improving your Cha from here on out. However, since you're lvl 8 your next ASI is 4 levels away and you are possibly unable to source magical equipment to give you a boost in that department, it's not really ideal in this particular case. You'd also be delaying your 3rd level spell slots (and everything else from future paladin levels, but those spell slots are up next).
Is it worth it mechanically? Arguably not. Is that tradeoff worth it in return for cool flavour? That's up to you, but I wouldn't call it a bad decision if you went with it.

Want to start playing but don't have anyone to play with? You can try these options: [link].
Decent into Avernus generally only goes to level 13. Keep that in mind. It means You’re shutting yourself off from more advanced pally abilities (like making everyone within 10’ of you immune to fear) in exchange for a couple warlock abilities. It means you won’t get another asi during the campaign, so your warlock abilities (if you choose any with saving throws or attacks, won’t be too great because of your cha score. You might check with your DM about the level they expect to go to. Then you can understand just what you’re giving up on the pally side and what you get for it. I wouldn’t do it, but Personally, I always just single class, so I’m very biased.
I have a paladin1 (13)/Hexblade warlock (3) and really enjoy it. If you do go the multiclass option take spells that don't require saves or attack rolls and will compliment your paladin-up-in-their-face-smiting. Here's what I chose:
Cantrips:
Eldritch Blast - For when I can't get in someone's face to hit so very useful when I need it.
Booming Blade - It scales well and actually does slightly more than my two attacks but only if the target moves. I have only used it when I wanted to stop something from moving but I can count the times I have used it on one hand.
1st:
Hex - Fantastic if you think you can keep concentration for 2 or more rounds. If it hits for at least 3 attacks then it's about equivalent to one level 1 smite; any more is just bonus damage.
Shield - FANTASTIC. I almost keep my level 1 slots free for shielding enemies because I have a great AC boosted by Protection fighting style, heavy armour and a magic shield. With Shield I can negate attacks (especially from the really big bads) and my AC goes up to 28 til my next turn.
2nd:
Blur - Never used it. I'd often prefer to smite. Also with my awesome AC with shield, I'd rather spend my action hitting than buffing myself.
Darkness - I have Devil's sight (though we call it Heaven's Sight) but because I ride a mount who won't be able to see I rarely use this. I've used it only 2 or 3 times. There was one battle though where I didn't have my mount and we got ambushed on our way out of a dungeon and we are all struggling and tapped out. This spell was awesome with my allies ducking out to attack and hopping back in and myself attacking as normal. Why blur when I can darkness
Find what works for you but have fun, even if you aren't min/maxing.
