The Wild Beyond the Witchlight was released about a week ago and I'm eager to try it out. This whimsical adventure places greater emphasis on interaction and role-playing and contains extremely little combat compared to other 5e modules, especially if the PC's want to avoid it. If that sounds interesting to you, and if you are willing to commit to several months of regular posting, then please apply to the adventure by creating a character in this recruitment thread. I will DM and I'm looking for no more than three or four players at this time. We will play on this forum.
To apply, please include the following information:
Character name, pronouns, age (minimum 23 years old, please, for reasons), race, background, brief backstory
Please note that, as a plot hook motivator, your character visited the famous traveling extravaganza known as the Witchlight Carnival long ago in the past, when your character was a young child. At that time your character had something stolen from them, and I don't mean their wallet or favorite toy. Something more along the lines of their "sense of direction" or 3 inches of their height, as examples. The character has felt the sting of that loss and wants to retrieve it, to be made whole. This thing you lost will be chosen for you if you are selected for the campaign; please don't try to choose something in your character application. In conjunction with the theft, your character has also been cursed with a minor curse (also to be determined).
Finally, at the end of the application, please indicate the lowest amount of combat content that you would be comfortable with. As I said, the book as written has extremely little combat, but I am comfortable with adding a bit more to meet the entertainment needs of the players. One way to think about it would be like this:
Combat x% / role-play and exploration y% you choose the lowest value for x you would be comfortable with, and x+y = 100%
Don't get me wrong, there will be combat. I like a good combat myself, and am happy to write some in, if needed. So many class abilities are combat-oriented!
I'm hoping to get applications from people who are willing to post on a daily basis and stick with it for the long-haul, and who are willing to put themselves out there a bit with some role-play and see what fun story we can craft together. Thanks in advance for applying!
Palifwan "Pal" Dustyrobes was a precocious young Harengon whose wanderings led him far from home. After inadvertently entering the Material Plane from The Feywild, Pal couldn't find his way back to the place of his crossing. He did find an eccentric old human mage who befriended him and taught him magic. The mage disappeared suddenly one day, leaving only a note that he had gone to explore other planes of existence. Pal is eager to learn all he can about magic and continue exploring the planes. He hopes to reunite with his mentor one day and to return to his home in the Feywild with knowledge to share.
Name: Bramble (She/Her) Alignment: Chaotic Good Age: 23-years Race: Fairy Gender: Female Class: Warlock (Archfey Patron) Lvl 1 Background: Witchlight Hand Feature: Carnival Fixture Lifestyle: Poor Appearance: A glimmer catches your eye, little more than a streak of light in your periphery. The small-sized feminine form flits about, hovering for a split second before fluttering away, leaving a trail of glittering dewdrops in her wake. When you do meet her you discover her name is Bramble. She's an alluringly petite Fairy with light rosy skin, orangish-pink gossamer dragonfly-wings, large expressive amber eyes, and a wild curly mane of shoulder-length lavender-colored hair with pink highlights hair circled by a crown of wildflowers. Bramble wears the typical Fairy fashion which consists of a skimpy tight-fitting transparent costume made of cobwebs and thistledown. When Bramble flies her Fey-marked skin sparkles in the moonlight as she leaves a trail of glittering dewdrops in her wake. A Carnival Companion that she calls Wee-Willie-Winkie, a harmless magical wisp of light with a flying speed of 30 feet, can hover, and sheds bright light in a 5-foot radius and dim light for an additional 5 feet can often be seen accompanying her everywhere she goes.
Backstory: For as long as she could remember Bramble had worked as a carnie hand... a member of the infamous Witchlight Carnival. Several years ago Bramble became separated and unstuck from the carnival and has been trying to return ever since.
Still fleshing out the back story, but do have what he lost.
Roy lost his sense of taste the last time he visited the Carnival when he was a young boy so he's never known the true pleasure of food and drink like roast venison or duck or a good stout. To Roy food is merely fuel, there to be consumed as neatly and as efficiently as possible, typically all his food goes into a single bowl he carries, gets all mixed together, and then eaten. Sweet, sour, salty, spicy, bitter.... none of it registers with him.
As far as combat goes I'm flexible and amenable to whatever the adventure and everyone else "dictates"
Kilian Gotlieb is a researcher. Was a researcher? Is a researcher. He studied the stars. He still makes charts of the stars, but he's looking for something different than he used to. Where before he looked to the skies to determine their nature, he now looks for messages hidden among the skies. His colleagues think he's lost it, naturally. He thinks maybe he's lost it. But he knows what he saw, and now that he knows, he has to know more.
When he stands up straight, which is rare, Kilian stands about 5'11. He's thin, but not exactly unhealthy looking. He has a mess of brown hair, usually goes a few days without shaving his face, and often looks like his mind is somewhere other than wherever his body is when he's not studying the stars. When he is studying the stars, he's locked in with almost supernatural focus and concentration, and carries a pouch packed full of his own hand-drawn star maps that he consults maybe a little too often.
I would be good with as little as 20-25% combat, with the rest to exploration/roleplay.
Name: Viola Cesario Pronoun: She/Her Age: 25 Race: Half-elf Class: Bard Background: Entertainer Backstory: Viola grew up with song and dance at the Frolicking Faun tavern in the village of Deepwood. Left by the doorstep as an infant and adopted by the Innkeeper she was always curious of the people that passed through the village bringing with them stories, stories of fantastic adventures. One day came the Witchlight Carnival to the village and that night Viola sneaked off to see it. The visit changed her life and the thought of finding the Witchlight Carnival again has not let her mind rest. The travellers kept coming though and Viola was a keen learner, soon skilled with the viol, playing and singing folksongs of young tragic love. Now a full fledged entertainer she is ready to set out on a fantastic adventure of her own, finally searching out the elusive Witchlight Carnival.
Lola took her little brother to Witchlight Carnival when she was five. There the little halfling girl watched a marvelous puppet show about feys ,dragons and witches. After the show Lola found the night stall named "The shop for everyone and everything". The owner of the shop offered her magical powerIn exchange of strange price. "The second most important thing of your life". Insanely motivated to be a witch, the girl accepted the offer. When she backed home, Lola found her brother was missing. And none, even her parents remembered him. Two decades of years past, now she regrets her deal. Lola wants her brother back.
Class: Warlock: The Archfey
I'm okay with a minimum of 20% Combat to 80% Roleplay/Exploration.
Backstory: Pruscia was born in the feywild to a large and loving family. She enjoyed her community of satyrs and was always a jovial soul. As she got older, she began to feel the true gravity of the chaos within the feywild when her mother was taken away from a warring band of centaurs. After such an event, Pruscia began to learn self defense with the help of her father and soon joined a band of satyrs that would venture around the feywild helping those in-need.
It was in very short time where the band found trouble and there were many causalities after a large fight with a band of centaurs, leaving Pruscia the leader. As leader, after seeing all the death, Pruscia turned tail back to home to forget what she had just seen. She looked to Chauntea for guidance, as opposed to Silvanus whom she was very familiar with. Through Chauntea's teachings back home, she found herself calmed and now dreams of a future through redemption.
But first... To the carnival for a fun time! That'll help!
Game Preference: My sweet spot is maybe like... 25% Combat. The other 75% can go to exploration/roleplay/carnival games/all that other fun stuff. But I'm cool for whatever!
“You can’t escape your fate. You saw the visions the same as I did. You can’t run from this.” These were the dying words of Ra’Salva’s brother, Da’Kar. Even so, Ra’Salva vanished from the world, pouring himself into esoteric studies concerning the control and manipulation of time… a desperate attempt to undo the past and return his lost brother to life.
For many years he devoted himself to his studies and managed to block out the strange dreams that plagued him night after night. But then, the dreams returned more vivid than ever, and Ra’Salva remembered Da’Kar’s words. Try as he might, he cannot escape his fate.
Backstory: Merric lived an idyllic and uneventful life for years, living on the outskirts of a small halfling farming community. He worked the fields occasionally, but spent most of his time wandering the forest, collecting roots and mushrooms and communing with nature while perfecting his brewing skills. He became very familiar with the forest and nature in general, and began to feel very protective of the woods and animals.Always viewed as a little strange by the townsfolk, he gained renown when he rescued a pair of lost children during a particularly violent storm.
Backstory: Attending the Witchlight Carnival is one of Talisa's fondest childhood memories, back before her parents died and life became a lot harder, a daily struggle for survival. Since the magical days of her childhood, Talisa has eked out a living as variously a criminal, thief, and smuggler, taking odd jobs wherever she can. In recent years she has built for herself a reputation as a competent and reliable smuggler, especially of arcane goods, which she has always been fascinated with, probably due to her childhood curiosity with all things magic.

I would prefer 20-25% combat and the rest a mix of RP and exploration. :)
Background: Calanon was take from his parents as a child by his grandfather. He did not approve of the fact they had chosen to left the feywild to travel the material plane in order to experience something new. Not wanting to be separated from his parents, the young eladrin ran from his grandfather and ended up losing himself in the wondrous surroundings of the plane. As he wandered he came across the circus and stayed their for a time. He left with of satyrs that thought he was something new and interesting for them to have around for a while,
With no where else to go, Calanon stayed with them, learning how to survive and making life long friends with several fey folk that he met during his travels. He stayed in the Feywild for nearly 40 years, only returning back to the Material Plane when he and a few of his satyr friends became drunk and wandered into a crossing. While touched by the feywild through his ancestry and time there he remembered his parents for the first time in many years, this seemingly not letting him back into the Feywild.
I am fine with a small amount of combat and more roleplay. Probably about 70 to 75% rp with the remaining being combat.
Character name: Davis pronouns: He/Him/His age: 47 years old race: Custom Lineage Class: Fighter (Going Rune Knight.) background: Mercinary Veteran brief backstory
Davis worked in a mercenary company for several years, earning his keep and going where the pay took him. He has retired from that work now, and spends his days training spoiled rich noble brats more often than not. He is a massive man, with a smattering of elvish blood that is only given away by a slight angle to his eyes and his ability to see in the dark as if in daylight. He wields a glaive, but also has trained with rune masters in the use of runes of power.
As far as amount of combat, I am good with as little as you wish to use. I love combat, but I also love a good rp session without any combat init at all.

Brief Backstory: She was raised in a very noble family highly respected in the Elven community; as such she was taught at a young age how proper nobles must act for the sake of their family name. As a little girl, she was invited to a strange circus as special noble guest with her mother and ever since that day she never felt quite right. Whenever she got this feeling, she just shrugged it off and focus on her family affairs. However along the way, she noticed that adventurers and towns people who often needed help; they took up the life as a Cleric under the Goddess Chauntea. -brief backstory-
The eldest son of a wealthy trade family, Klopas holds interest in craft and exchange, but lives not for wealth, status, nor power. His family, especially parents, expect him to take over the family's small conglomeration of shops, ships, and trade routes, but he held more interest in the learning, travels, and experiences this brought him, rather than the skill or money. This causes frequent fights and frustrations between Klopas and his family. Whether he's welcome or shunned is often variable, but he tends to make acquaintances and grow personally throughout his travels despite being the black sheep.

Hey there! New to the game, so if that matters...
Character name = Klopas Threeguard
pronouns = him, he
age (minimum 23 years old, please, for reasons) = 25, race = human, background = noble
(please note that there are two new campaign-specific backgrounds available, if that interests you)
