New DM Recruiting for PbP Lost Mines of Phandevler 5e
Greetings adventures,
I'm a new DM looking to try my hand at running a PbP. I've been playing 5e for about 2 years now and by no means an expert. I'm looking for 4-5 players to run Lost Mines of Phandevler module (Level 1 - 8) with some of my personal tweaks, side-missions, and random encounters.
If you have played this module before it should be something new and fun. The main story is still mostly the same so please don't spoil for any new players. This game will focus pretty heavily on RP. 70% role play and 30% combat/other.
Please try to post daily to keep the game moving. Milestone for leveling and rewards for players who do something awesome or think outside the box.
With that out of the way, lets get to the requirements!
Must be 18+. Mature Content. Cooperate with your fellow PCs, most monsters don't take prisoners! If a PC dies, that's how the dice fall. You can roll a different PC at the same level or find a healer($$$)/spell to bring them back.
Starting at Level 1 with Starting Equipment
Name:
Abilities: Point Buy or Roll 4D6 drop lowest.
Race: (Any races from books, but you have to explain in your backstory how a monster or exotic race plays into the story and/or Neverwinter region. No Homebrew.)
Class / Subclass: (Any class / future multiclass)
Background and Story:
Adventure Hook: You can invent your own reasons for visiting Phandalin, or you can use the "Meet Me in Phandalin" adventure hook.
Meet Me in Phandalin - In the city of Neverwinter your dwarf patron and friend, Gundren Rockseeker, hires you to escort a wagon to Phandalin.
Magic Item Wishlist: (Give me 3x Uncommon items you would like to find, 2x Rare items you would die for.)
Character's Future: (Something you would like to do in this game. Such as: Kill a Dragon!, Find a power magical item!, Build a house!, Find some cheese! ect...)
Tidbit about Yourself: (I've been playing 5e for about 2 years, I like PC games(currently playing Solasta: Crown of the Magister), and death by chocolate ice cream.)
Race: Variant Human (Racial Feat: Resilient - CON)
Class/Subclass: Rouge Thief 13/Champion 7
Background and Story: Criminal/Spy.
Mio is a mercenary working for money. She works so she can keep her large family consisting of her parents, her younger sister, her two uncles and their wives, her two cousins, and her two grandparents on her mother's side. She has a trustworthy contact who she frequently exchanges messages with and sends coin to give to her family. She was in Neverwinter when she learned that a dwarf named Gundren Rockseeker was looking to hire people to escort a wagon and since it seemed like an easy enough job for the pay offered, she applied. She started her mercenary work at the age of 16 though that was four years ago and she is now 20. Her younger sister looks up to her and wishes to follow in her footsteps though Mio greatly discourages this as mercenary work is very dangerous and she wouldn't be doing it if she didn't have a family to worry about.
Hook: . She was in Neverwinter when she learned that a dwarf named Gundren Rockseeker was looking to hire people to escort a wagon and since it seemed like an easy enough job for the pay offered, she applied.
Magic Item Wishlist:
Uncommon: Bag of Holding, Goggles of Night, Gloves of Thivery Rare: Mantle of Spell Resistance, (Can't quite think of anything so adding one more Uncommon Item) Necklace of Adaptation
Character's Future: Really she wants to get rich and send the gold to her family so they can get out of poverty and solve all the problems they are dealing with. Possibly also retire and settle down instead of doing all sorts of dangerous stuff for gold.
About Me: I've been playing 5E for quite a while now though I've played exclusively PBP posts. I like creating multi-class builds and just treat it like a class skillset of a character rather than a character going through a class change/dip in the story. For example, playing a Fighter/Wizard multiclass and treating the character like some kind of mage knight that trains in both armor and magic instead of treating it as a wizard learning swordplay or a fighter learning spells.
Hammond was born in the city of Splendors, Waterdeep. His family recently came upon a noble title due to the feats of his grandfather, making a comfortable life for themselves in one of the cities better districts. Around twenty three years ago his mother, Lady Mara Onc married Bertolt Mardus a knight that was famous for killing a Dragon that had taken up in the Spine of the World.
About two years into their marriage is when Hammond was first conceived, his father having to leave during this time in order to deal with a call to arms. To keep his wife safe Bertolt told her one of his families men at arms would guard her until he returned. Soon after a man calling himself Tiber arrived, claiming to be the guard promised by Bertolt. Over the time spent together, Mara would find herself infatuated with the guard, trusting him more and more.
One night he seemed to have her charmed and during an intimate he revealed his true self and bit her, turning her into a vampire and as a side effect imparting some of the curse to the unborn Hammond. After this happened Tiber disappeared and left Mara to give birth to her son months later. Soon after this though, the lady would force herself out into the sunlight, not wanting to live as vampire.
Adventure Hook: Information about the vampire that infected his mother during pregnancy was sighted in Phandalin within the past month or so.
Magic Item Wishlist: Uncommon- Boots of Elvenkind, Bag of Holding, Gloves of Thievery
Rare- Cloak of Displacement, +2 Rapier
Character's Future: Find and slay the vampire that infected his mother and thus left him as dhamphir upon being born.
From that day on Hammond was raised by his father and the rest of his family, always somewhat treated with caution due to his nature. Despite this he received all the benefits of being born a noble, gaining a good education both mental and physical. From a young age he trained to become a knight like his father but was more skilled on the arts of subterfuge and quick attacks then the chivalrous deeds of a true knight. With this in mind he took to learning other things by going out and about with the common folk, even joining a small gang of thieves during his teenage years. This eventually led to a falling out with his father and he left Waterdeep to travel. Before he left he was given a note by his grandfather that explained more of what happened to his mother as well as the last known location of a man that fit the description of Tiber.
Tidbit about Yourself: I've been playing D&D on and off for close to ten years now, both 3.5 and 5e. I tend to play mostly rpgs and recently went back to play Final Fantasy VI.
Have attempted to play LMoP here as a PbP once before. Never got out of the tavern we met in. The completionist in me really wants to see what it's all about. Rolls below then brb with character.

Name: Zenri Thistletop
Race: Stout Halfling
Class/subclass: Artificer/TBA
Background: Z, as he was known to the dwarves, had been living with a clan of mountain dwarves for several years after suffering from wanderlust early in his life. They had been very accommodating when he first met one of their warriors in a tavern in Daggerfalls. He studied their ways, their trades and became an apprentice jeweller. While he did not excel at the craft he could hold his own in cutting raw gems and making minor pieces.
Of late he had become complacent about his repetitive work - the master jeweller would not give him any challenging work, just basic chores. It was on one such shift that he decided to seek out a new teacher. He had heard of a clan up north that had become so adept at jewel work that they could imbue magic into their craft. His interest piqued, he set out to find this Ironstar clan.
Hook: He does not know where to find the Ironstar clan. During his travels he had heard that Phandalin had a mine and thought they might know.
Future: He plans to become a master jeweller unter the tutelage of the Ironstar clan. Travelling the Sword Coast selling his magically imbued creations and living the high life.
Me: Been playing 5e D&D for the last year and a bit here on DDB. One (still running) campaign and numerous flash in the pan attempts. Some I left, others stopped naturally. I find engagement from all including the DM is key to my enjoyment of the games.
I live in Australia, so my posting times (and my spelling) can vary greatly to the rest of the known world. I like dogs.
((Wow. Such average scores. I'll take them. Prefer flavour over min/max anyway. Should make for interesting story))

Malenia - [Monk - Way of the Jedi] - Auryn: Princess of Destiny
Class / Subclass: Bard (College of Valor or Lore, depending on party)
Background and Story:
Landrae was born to a couple who worked and performed in a travelling troupe, her elven mother a singer and seamstress, her human father a carpenter, illusionist, and lyrist. As the troupe evolved, faces she had known since childhood settled down, and the troupe began to stay in familiar towns for extended periods of time.
Still enraptured by the world, and her wanderlust ever gnawing at her, Landrae said her farewells and set out on her own. She travelled for a few years, roaming far and wide, playing in taverns, or at campfires on the road. Getting by with her looks, her voice, and her music. When staying in a city inn one night, her performance caught the ear of a member of the household staff for the lord of the region. So impressed, the lord was convinced to give the young minstrel an audience, and through that performance was Landrae given her first patronage.
For a month, Landrae toiled to compose a work that would be performed at the Lord's birthday celebrations. Unbeknownst to our favourite minstrel though, the relatives of the lord sought to play a cruel game and gave Landrae advice of the least favourable sort. Filling her composition with jokes and mistruths about the lord, and convincing her to keep the work secret until it was first performed. The work brought shame and embarrassment to the lord and his minstrel, and not believing that his own family had plotted to make him lose face, her cast out the minstrel and withdrew his patronage.
Cursing herself for a naive fool, Landrae sought a way to escape the shame and vowed never to compose verse or set word to events she had not verified. Her flight from that endeavour led her to the city of NeverWinter, where she flits between taverns plying her trade and seeking an adventure that she can stylise in song or script from her own experience.
Adventure Hook:
Hearing that Gundren Rockseeker was offering employment to the remote village of Phandalin Landrae seeks to begin her career anew by finding her own adventures to turn into epics sung at taverns or made into plays like her parents used to perform.
Landrae seeks to tell tales that bring audiences from afar, she seeks something real from which she can suitable embellish such a story, and overcome her shaky start. Eventually possibly at her own tavern or in a travelling troupe.
Tidbit about Yourself:
I've played D&D on anf off (more off, than on to be fair) since AD&D, but have been more active again in the last couple of years. Mostly play PbP now, and have started lost mines several times and yet never got far. Looking to turn that around. Fun fact, I have sectoral heterochromia.
Backstory . . . . .The entirety of Ruanathi's life has played out within the Neverwinter Wood, which lies east of Neverwinter. His fascination with the natural world extends to the night sky, and he often can be found atop one of the many ruins in the wood where he studies and records the movements of the stars overhead. Believing that isolation from the rest of the world is unwise, Ruanathi periodically visits nearby towns and villages to ensure he is informed about the goings-on in the rest of Faerun. His time in Neverwinter has allowed him to become a friend of Gundren, who has now presented Ruanathi with this unusual but possibly worthwhile opportunity.
In the future . . . Within the Neverwinter Wood, the ruins of an ancient castle stand. It is a place of foreboding, and woodland creatures avoid it altogether. No trees grow within it. No vines creep over its crumbled walls. Someday, when he posses the wisdom and ability, Ruanathi hopes to explore the place and understand its past and its mysteries.
About me . . . . . I've invested quite a bit of time here in the play-by-post world, mostly as a DM. I love stories, and I love storytelling. Somehow, I've avoided being exposed to any of the details about LMoP, and I'm interested in being part of it.
Applications will be closing starting tomorrow morning. Thank you all for sharing your wonderful characters! *Fingers cross* PMs and Campaign invites will be sent out Monday around the afternoon.
(Oh, no! That was awful! Can I switch to Point Buy? Unless we want my flaws to be my defining characteristics...)
Race: Dragonborn (Silver)
Class: Cleric (Tempest Domain)
Backstory: Marva spent her young adulthood working in a library in Neverwinter, studying and organizing the books. She likes the order of the library, but there is a part of her that revels in the wildness of a good storm. Her parents attribute this wild streak to her birth during a huge blizzard. When her ancient Gnomish mentor Wrenn Legantel dies, a new head librarian arrives, an elf named Ivellios. He has long coveted the leadership position in this library and wants to bring in all his own underlings. He finds an excuse to throw Marva out and she is at a loss as to what to do with her life now. (I don't know if Dragonborn are considered exotic, but Marva's parents were traveling merchants who settled in this area when they realized they were going to have a child.)
Adventure hook: Marva is getting low on coin when she hears that Gundren is hiring folks to escort a wagon to Phandalin.
The Future: Marva is looking to find a new career that encompasses both order and wildness. Perhaps she would like to found her own library but have the freedom to go out on adventures when she wishes.
Tidbit about myself: I am a librarian who loves games and stories. I was given a starter kit for Advanced D&D on my ninth birthday, but didn't play much after the first rush of interest. In the last few years, I've been watching a lot of actual play streams and running D&D games with my students. After being a player in a few different PbP games that fizzled out quickly, I started DMing my own (Karmoli's A Great Upheaval). I love to see players who make bold decisions and make their characters known though good role play. I hope to be that kind of player.

Name: Davril Embershade Race: Half-elf Class: Warlock (Genie) Background:"Serve me half-elf and I will grant your wish for magic." The voice of the fiery creature clad in a fine silk caftan boomed in the small cave. How on Toril did I end up like this Davril asked himself still holding the pashas ruby ring in his trembling hands.
Davril grew up in Waterdeep, adopted as an infant by the Inkeeper of the Embershade tavern in dockward, left at its doorstep with a simple note reading "His name is Davril, please take care of him until I return." But no one ever returned. Young Davril was always found listening to the stories told at the tavern, stories about magic and adventure. Eventually he became a storyteller himself and found that he had a talent for creating stories of his own, making them more fabulous with each performance, most often deeply impressing his audience, with the exception of that time at The Yawning Portal, when a brooding man by the bar turned out to be an actual adventurer who inconsiderately pointed out that there is no such thing as an eight headed hydra. Davril was eventually dragged into the criminal underworld of Waterdeep and found a trade as a con artist helping himself and others less fortunate to some of the wealth of the citys nobility. Recently he invited himself to a banquet held in the honor of a visiting pasha from Calimshan. With no insignificant aid from the pashas lovely daughter Sabah, who wanted to play a prank on her tyrant of a father, Davril left the banquet wearing the pashas ruby ring. Little did he realize just how furious this would make the pasha and he soon found that there were no hiding in Waterdeep from the wrath of Pasha Nazim. Davril left Waterdeep in a hurry, travelled north and eventually found himself taking shelter for the night in a small cave not far from the road to Neverwinter.
As he stood before the noble efreet Farouq who had suddenly appeared in the cave Davril quickly succumbed to the temptation of magic and agreed to serve Farouq, who sought to extend his influence beyond Calimshan. After reaching Neverwinter, learning fiery magics on the road, Davril soon realized that the pashas men were in hot pursuit and that Neverwinter was still within the pashas extensive grasp.
Adventure hook: As the Pashas men are closing in on him Davril decides to enlist as a caravan guard going to the conveniently remote village of Phandalin Future: Davril will seek out adventure and magic while trying to evade the pashas men. Eventually he will try to rid himself of his pact and find his parents. Magic items: Bag of holding, Pearl of power, Winged boots (Uncommon), Rod of the pact keeper +2, Cloak of displacement (Rare) Myself: Played rpgs for 35 years since 1st ed, new to pbp but loving it.

Bill is a dad bard. He’s helping out a neighbor with some troubles and got roped into a lot more than he thought. But he’s got his socks and sandals, his shirt tucked into his shorts, and a hat with a fart joke written on it. Still, he’s not afraid anything. He’ll see the job done, despite teaching the kids some new words along the way.

Name: Landrae Soupe (https://ddb.ac/characters/13642398/meAa2p)
Abilities: As above
Race: Half-Elf
Magic Item Wishlist:
Blast Scepter, Cloak of Many Fashions, Pearl of Power, Reveler's Concertina, and Stone of Good Luck (Luckstone)
Character's Future:
Landrae seeks to tell tales that bring audiences from afar, she seeks something real from which she can suitable embellish such a story, and overcome her shaky start. Eventually possibly at her own tavern or in a travelling troupe.
Tidbit about Yourself:
I've played D&D on anf off (more off, than on to be fair) since AD&D, but have been more active again in the last couple of years. Mostly play PbP now, and have started lost mines several times and yet never got far. Looking to turn that around. Fun fact, I have sectoral heterochromia.
Bring out your inner chatacter class...

About me . . . .

Name: Davril Embershade
Race: Half-elf
Class: Warlock (Genie)
Background: "Serve me half-elf and I will grant your wish for magic." The voice of the fiery creature clad in a fine silk caftan boomed in the small cave.
Adventure hook: As the Pashas men are closing in on him Davril decides to enlist as a caravan guard going to the conveniently remote village of Phandalin
Future: Davril will seek out adventure and magic while trying to evade the pashas men. Eventually he will try to rid himself of his pact and find his parents.
Magic items: Bag of holding, Pearl of power, Winged boots (Uncommon), Rod of the pact keeper +2, Cloak of displacement (Rare)
Myself: Played rpgs for 35 years since 1st ed, new to pbp but loving it.
