In valleys veiled by frost and night, Echoes whisper of an ancient blight, A darkness stirs from slumber's hold, As secrets Deep unfold.
Nestled within the frost-kissed peaks of Snowsong Valley, a dark cult sets into motion a plot of vengeance a thousand years in the making. After millennia of peace, the Realms of Lyonn have grown complacent, the leaders of its nations blind to a threat growing in the shadows of their very halls.
In recent months, Snowsong Valley has seen a rise in disappearances of travelers on its roads, particularly among traders and merchants. Local authorities have attributed the peculiar trend to more mundane causes: harsh wintery conditions, bandit activity, or simple mismanagement and ordered for a minor increase in guard patrols.
The disappearances have caught the attention of a retired investigator by the name of Orlan, who senses something larger afoot within the valley.
You are one of the few Orlan has called upon for help, owing some debt or favor to the old investigator. Begrudgingly (or enthusiastically), you set off for the boreal north to answer his call, unaware that you will soon step into the machinations of an ancient cult, hellsbent on shattering the Realms forever.
Greetings forum denizens! I'm here to run a homebrew adventure using the "spiral campaign" method. It'll be fairly sandbox like, save for the beginning so I can introduce some lore and hooks. Here are quick-facts about the campaign developed so far:
The Snowsong Valley is a region within the Adisan Empire, renowned for its unique deposits of a special metal: astralight ore. Properly worked, this material can be used to power and bolster incredible arcane enchantments. It is the backbone of the empire's strength, allowing it to stand head and shoulders above neighboring nations.
For a thousand years, a dark cult has been plotting the revenge of a powerful and forgotten evil. The first step of their plan will unfold in the Snowsong Valley.
The ruins of a destroyed civilization lay undiscovered in the valley, buried beneath ice and stone.
Before you apply to the campaign, here are some things to keep in mind:
I like to run campaigns that lean heavily into the roleplaying aspect. You'll be expected to interact with the other player characters regularly. Friendships? Rivalries? Romances? Have at it, just don't leave me separately interacting with 5 players all the time, I hate it!
That being said, you don't need to be a Best Seller's level writer to join this campaign. So long as you make an effort to roleplay, I'm happy! (=
You don't need it at the start, but keep an idea for a personal goal in the back of your mind for your character.
The length of this campaign is unknown at this point. But I'd like to have a group of people that can commit to posting a few times a day most of the time, falling back to a minimum of once a day if needed.
This is not a fleshed out setting. We'll be building it as we go. I legit don't even have a pantheon. If you're making a cleric we gonna need to come up with a deity!
The campaign will be played here on the forums.
Here is a list of sourcebooks that can be used for character creation: - Player's Handbook - Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide - Xanathar's Guide to Everything - Tasha's Cauldron of Everything - Fizban's Treasury of Dragons - From Monsters of the Multiverse: Aasimar, Changeling, Eladrin, Genasi, Goliath, and Shifter.
The details I need from you are listed below: - Character Name | - Race | - Class | - Background | - Backstory | (specifically, why do you owe Orlan a favor or debt?)
Ability Scores: Roll 'em up, roll 'em up! Re-roll 1's. Take Standard Array or Point Buy if you hate what you get!
I'm already running a campaign on the forums, so I'm not hankering as much for one this time and there's no rush on getting this one going. Apply at your leisure if you're interested!
Name: Vinoth Rivereye Thiaga Character Sheet Race: Goliath Class: Druid (Circle of Dreams) Background: Outlander Backstory: Vinoth is from the Thiaga clan of nomadic Goliaths. The clan wandered through northern regions, through mountains, snow, and frigid forests. The Thiagas were relativly isolated, only making contact with villages to trade or raid when needed. They also formed strong connections and superstitions about the lands around them, mainly the mountains they would often traverse. Some were the resting places of gods, others the tombs of great warriors. Vinoth grew up in this tribe learning its ways around nature, superstition, and gods of the wild. Not long after Vinoth was born and before he could remember the Thiagas encountered a white dragon which they named Ghostwing. The tribe and dragon help eachother but the relationship with her is still tension filled. Vinoth became part of a group who worships (insert god here) which opposed Ghostwing's views or tactics in many scenarios and after not long they planned to overthrow her and re-gift the chieftainship of the Thiaga to a goliath. After a failed coup Vinoth and his group split. Now, not even two weeks later he arrived in Snowsong Valley. His father would roam the same valley and when Vinoth was a baby he used his proficiency in magic and stoneworking to create a series of trails for Vinoth to complete when he become of age. Vinoth now believes he must find and complete these trials around the valley to redeem himself and prepare to possibly face Ghostwing once again.
(There's more I have in mind that I would rather keep under wraps for now or just message to the DM. Also I know I didn't put any connection to Orlan in the backstory. I was thinking his connection into Snowsong would be enough but I can fs add Orlan in there somewhere if you prefer!=)
Name: Sybil Tannbrakker ( https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/106313605 ) Race: Half-Orc Class: Wizard Background: Noble Backstory: As provincial and underwhelming as she finds the northern climes it is with a resigned air that Sybil boards a carriage towards the Snowsong Valley. Orlans missive had caught her at a weak moment and she supposed her thoughts had been reminiscing a little on the time they had spent together in the past. And of course Orlan had delivered the goods on her third husband allowing her to keep both the main house and the summer home in the settlement....she did owe the old duffer.
She admired herself in the carriage window as she travelled, still not too badly put together for all her 56 years.....part of that she knew was due to her mothers family, the old battleaxe was still rearranging furniture and carrying armfuls of great-grandchildren around in her 80s. A small part of her was intrigued in perhaps acquiring some astralight ore, or at least seeing the substance before it was processed to see if she could glean anything from it.
Yes, it would be good to see Orlan again.....perhaps even rekindle something....perhaps not...this was about settling her debts not creating complications.....
- Character Name| Jiya Jiang (https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/23086355) - Race | Water Genasi - Class | Monk (Warrior of Shadow) - Background | Entertainer in a large city. Abandoned by her Marid mother, Jiya was raised by Shadow Monks. She became a performer specializing in the drum and pan flute. She adores the old songs and tales and is something of a traditionalist. Most people don't know she is really a ninja; she is wearing normal clothes and NOT a gi/mask combo. Her weapon is the quarterstaff, but she also carries a light crossbow and ammo. Can't be too careful in such a dangerous world! Her unusual looks (blue skin and green hair) make her stand out in all but the most urbane places. - Backstory | She owes Orlan for getting her a job during her beginning days and has, rather reluctantly, travelled to Snowsong Valley to repay him, playing for her keep along the way.
Standard array: S 13 Dex 15, Con 16, Int 12 Wis 11 Cha 8 (includes racial bonuses)
OOC notes: Dunno what a spiral campaign is, but it sounds fun! :) Thank you for running!
Edit: IC goal: Tracking down her birth-parents. OOC goal: Increasing her Charisma enough to multiclass as a Glory Bard. Tall request!
Take Standard Array or Point Buy if you hate what you get!

Richter Kalos Half-Elf | Warlock | Investigator | x
Richterwould have been long dead or worse were it not for Orlan. In his early adolescence, he was saved from the absolute madness of an occult ritual by the investigator, though not before it the ritual inflicted a permanent change within him. His earliest memories are of the cult - whether he was taken from his parents when he was but an infant or if they were cultists themselves, he's not sure. In any case they were nowhere to be found, and so for a time he stayed with Orlan. Eventually he was left at an orphanage in another city, where he would spend the rest of his childhood.
Though his time with Orlan was short, Richterquickly grew to admire him. He picked up on a couple of the man's best qualities: an unyielding curiosity, and a desire to use his strength for the sake of others. When he was old enough, he joined the city watch as an investigator, eager to follow in his hero's footsteps.
As a personal goal, Richterkeeps an ear to the ground for information about strange activity that may be attributed to cults. Some day he wants to track down the origins of the one that nearly killed him as a child.
OOC notes: Dunno what a spiral campaign is, but it sounds fun! :) Thank you for running!
The basic idea is that instead of building out this huge setting and coming up with detail in advance (which I'm not talented enough for), you just build up the character's starting location and areas of immediate interest to them. Then as they go to other places, you fill those out too. So you're only having to come up with stuff as the players need it, instead of just having all this unused material laying around that they may or may not stumble upon.
I think I'll submit a character that didn't make it elsewhere, whose concept I wound up actually liking (as I don't think I've ever actually played a true ranged martial.)
NAME: Echo (aka Edward Green) RACE: Variant Human (+1 CON, +1 INT; Sharpshooter Feat) CLASS: Fighter 3 (Psi Warrior) ALIGNMENT: Chaotic Good BACKGROUND: Entertainer STORY BOND: When a wolf pack attacked & killed almost everyone in your traveling circus troupe, the people of a town in the Snowsong Valley--at the insistence of Orlan--chased them off and took you in afterwards. You've decided that you owe a blood debt to the man who rallied the town in your defense. CHARACTER SHEET:https://ddb.ac/characters/104103481/PLWV8Q BACKSTORY: The 2nd son and fourth child of a successful adventurer, Edward was trained from an early age in all manner of weapons and fighting styles. With his smaller frame and quiet demeanor, the boy eventually specialized in ranged weapons, but resented the mercenary path that his father was pushing him toward. Once of age, he ran from home, using his honed skills (and growing psionic power, which he kept secret) to find a position as a trick archer with a small traveling circus troupe. It was a fun and educational (if poor and difficult) three years where he finally managed to open up to new friends before disaster struck... one night on their way to the Snowsong Valley, the strongman responsible for that night's watch of the caravan fell asleep from overwork, and a wolf pack attacked the troupe. Only Edward (now going by his stage name, The Amazing Echo) and a couple of others managed to make it to the outskirts of a nearby town--where they found the townsfolk initially hesitant to assist. It was then that Orlan rallied them, and together the town helped chase away the beasts before the rest of the troupe were done in. After being taken in by the town and nursed back to health, Edward decided to finally settle and make the region his new home.
I was just curious if you know how many players you want or if you have a day you planned to invite people and close submissions? Or is it more of a play it by ear thing?
