Got an idea to make D&D A-team. Like the good old TV series. Will need 4 characters.
Leader - Hannibal
Muscle - BA Barracus
Vehicles, covert ops and ridiculousness - Murdock
Sweet talk and persuasion - Faceman
All of the characters must be with "soldier" background, just like in the series.
If you think this is a great idea, write which of the roles you'd like to play and maybe ideas for each role - no char sheets - just race, class and some flavor. Class and race should fit the character. Or you have to make an argument why it fits if I don't see it.
If we get a crew, then I would really love to run this nonsense :D The campaign would be just like the series - you help those in need and constantly run and evade military police of the fantasy world.
Humans are versatile and can be customized to fit many roles, fitting Hannibal's strategic mind and leadership qualities.
Class: Fighter (Battle Master)
The Battle Master subclass emphasizes strategy and tactics, which aligns well with Hannibal's role as the planner and leader of the team. The various maneuvers can represent his cunning plans and combat skills.
2. Lieutenant Templeton "Faceman" Peck
Race: Half-Elf
Half-Elves are charming and adaptable, fitting Face's role as a smooth-talking con artist who can blend into different social situations.
Class: Bard (College of Eloquence)
The College of Eloquence Bard is all about persuasive skills and social manipulation, making it a perfect fit for Face's charisma and ability to talk his way out of (or into) anything.
3. Sergeant Bosco "B.A." Baracus
Race: Goliath
Goliaths are strong, tough, and often work as laborers or warriors, fitting B.A.'s role as the team's muscle and mechanic.
Class: Barbarian (Path of the Ancestral Guardian)
The Path of the Ancestral Guardian Barbarian fits B.A.'s role as the protector and front-line fighter of the team. His rage and physical prowess make him a fearsome combatant.
4. Captain H.M. "Howling Mad" Murdock
Race: Human (Variant)
The Variant Human allows for a feat at level 1, providing versatility and the potential to emphasize Murdock's unique skills.
Class: Rogue (Mastermind)
The Mastermind Rogue has abilities that fit Murdock's resourcefulness and unpredictable nature. The subclass's emphasis on manipulation and cunning aligns with Murdock's eccentric but clever personality. Alternatively, the subclass "Soulknife" could represent his mental instability and extraordinary skillset.
But I think we can do better than the chat gpt versions, which are the most vanilla feeling renditions of these characters.
I think Hannibal needs to be a mastermind rogue, not a battlemaster.
I might suggest glory bard for face man. But enchanter wizard or trickster cleric might make for a better balance
id suggest artificer for Murdoch
and BA is a dwarf imo. With agoraphobia. Barbarian makes sense, but champion fighter would be fun as well.
Are you thinking modern day just using the classes or set in faerun/fantasy world with adjusted backgrounds?
I would throw my hat in the ring for Murdoch as an aarakokra artificer (alchemist) or as BA as a dwarf something. Will have to noodle on his class but leaning towards a champion fighter with unarmed specialty.

This would be just a random fantasy, most likely faerunesque world. 4 guys - ex whatever generic military soldiers - deserters.
Love your ideas of classes. Aarakokra seems fitting foe Murdoch. Will see how popular this post gets and whether we can gather some soldiers of fortune
Ever notice that Leverage's team is the A-Team plus a thief?
I like the idea of playing B.A. Baracus as a human barbarian with the Artificer Initiate feat to reflect his strong mechanical skills. I'd go with path of the Ancestral Guardian to represent his ties to his Mandinka ancestors.(From whence the hairstyle came.)

Did you mean a Glamour Bard or Oath of Glory Paladin? (College of Eloquence could make sense since he has a "silver tongue.")
A bard might actually make more sense for Hannibal. Make him a variant human and take the Inspiring Leader feat. Then he can motivate the team (Temp HP) and dole out bardic inspiration. How else could the team pull off such outrageous plans against overwhelming odds?!
If Hannibal is a bard, then maybe Faceman could be a high CHA rogue with expertise in deception. Or a warlock who focuses on charm effects.

I meant a college of valor bard.
Bard for Hannibal (i would still go valor bard) actually makes a ton of sense. And he definitely needs inspiring leader! Hannibal is also a master of disguise, which lends itself to Bard. Wizard is another interesting class selection for Hannibal. He’s certainly intelligence based, so an int based class makes sense.
Faceman as a warlock is also really good.

Open to other thoughts about Murdoch. I definitely like arakokra, for the flight. A goblin or crazy gnome could also work.
Artificer seems like a good fit, too, but what are alternative ideas? I thought warlocks are just kinda weird, which fits.
Murdock
I thought your aarakocra artificer was a funny idea. Of course, I imagined Murdock looking more like a gangly crane than an eagle. And when you said artificer, I was honestly imagining a Battle Smith. I'm sure that his Steel Defender would constantly annoy B.A., especially since Murdock would act as though "steely" is an equal member of the team and B.A.'s best friend.
When I saw the thread, I initially thought of a gnome for Murdock. Just sort of disconnected with the world and involved in his own tinkering.
But if you want to play into his "crazy" schtick, there are a lot of directions you could go. Warforged or autognome might be fun. That would give the character a good reason to have a sort of long-running identity crisis and difficulty fitting in the normal world. And, really, either Eberron or Spelljammer might be a better fit for an A-Team type of campaign than the Forgotten Realms. (For example, turn B.A.'s fear of flying into a dislike of spelljammer ships. Especially since Murdock is the one attuned to the party's spelljamming helm.)
Or maybe go with a kalashtar who thinks (or pretends that he thinks) that he can speak to his quori spirit. Maybe his sanity really did crack because of some nightmarish experience related to Dal Quor. Or maybe he was an isolated kalashtar who doesn't know anything about Dal Quor or where his abilities come from. As the description says: "Such orphans might use their abilities for personal gain or otherwise act against the virtuous instincts of their quori spirits; this can cause internal conflicts and violent mood swings."
Or if you want a more high-fantasy version, make him an eladrin who changes his "season" just about every day. Maybe the DM will even house-rule it so that Murdock can be more changeable. For example, maybe he can change his season once / day as a bonus action, suddenly bounding from a still and pessimistic Winter to a manic and foolhardy Summer).
If you think of Murdock less as a mechanic and as more of a skill expert, he could be a rogue. Maybe an arcane trickster? Instead of a fear of flying, B.A. has a fear of boats, and Murdock is a former naval steersman with proficiency in vehicles (water). Now he's a soldier of fortune, a.k.a. "pirate."
Murdock doesn't seem like he'd have the focus to study as a wizard, but you could go in a different direction and make him a sorcerer. Aberrant Mind origin could be used to tie his insanity to some eldritch horror he experienced. Or go with Wild Magic origin to keep that character chaotic and zany. (You could do something similar with a Great Old One Warlock or an Archfey Warlock, respectively.)
B.A.
It also occurred to me that a Dragonborn might make a good B.A. Just take the attitude, slow down the delivery, and imagine an angry dragon face saying it: "You messed up bad. Now, I have to mess you up. It is the law!” 😉

Definitely a gangly bird. A loon or crane or something.
I thought about battle smith, which makes sense for the military background. Arcane trickster is quite interesting as well… he could have a puppet that he uses his mage hand to manipulate which he says is his familiar. Which annoys BA.
BA as a dragon born is a good one. The whole love of gold/gold chains works well there.

Of course, thinking about this again, a "standard" D&D party of 4 is
Fighter
Wizard
Cleric
Rogue
I didn't know whether anyone wants to simply mimic the characters from a 40-year old TV show no matter how strong the nostalgia is. (I can hear the theme song in my head when I see this thread.)
But if the party is just "inspired by" those 4 characters, then it's not far off from a normal party.
Hannibal - Bard
BA Barracus - Fighter or Barbarian
Murdock - Artificer or Arcane Trickster Rogue
Faceman - Bard if Hannibal isn't a bard. Or Rogue if Murdock goes Artificer. Or Warlock.
How hard do you want to lean into the A-Team? Are the characters wanted for a crime that they didn't commit? Are you planning homebrew or using a published adventure? (KftGV might be a good fit, but I personally found that adventure pretty difficult to play in PbP.) Is this supposed to be a low/no kill campaign like the made-for-TV show? Or once it gets going, do you expect it to be more like a standard campaign?
I thought about the classic party composition as well. Seems like there is possibility to make that work if we’re all flexible. Hannibal as a war priest might work, but seems like face or Murdoch have the best opportunity for fulfilling cleric role.
How hard do you want to lean into the A-Team? I like the idea of “inspired by” rather than a straight rehash.
Are the characters wanted for a crime that they didn't commit? I think it is important that they were a squad, they were framed for a crime they didn’t commit, and they escaped together.

Heh. I was thinking about changelings earlier. If Faceman is a con-artist charmer (high CHA with a focus on persuasion and especially deception), it could make sense for him to be a changeling. If not, again, maybe a Warlock with the Mask of Many Faces invocation?

Yeah, I wasn't trying to squeeze the party into the "standard 4" roles. Bards and Artificers are already hybrid classes. Depending on the campaign, something like this might work::
Hannibal - Bard (College of Valor)
BA Barracus - Barbarian (Path of Ancestral Guardians) w/ Artificer Initiate
Murdock - Artificer (Alchemist or Battle Smith)
Faceman - Warlock (Archfey)
Bards and Artificers both have some healing spells. Bard is a full caster with a limited set of known spells. Artificers are INT-based casters who can change their prepared spells after every long rest. The Warlock brings some illusion or enchantment spells to the mix.
But, like you said, other combinations would work well together:
Hannibal - Wizard
BA Barracus - Cleric, STR-based (Forge Domain)
Murdock - Artificer (Alchemist or Battle Smith)
Faceman - Bard (College of Valor or Eloquence)
And, really, if it's a non-standard campaign, you could go with a really non-standard party composition:
Hannibal - Fighter (Eldritch Knight), STR + INT
BA Barracus - Fighter (Rune Knight), STR + CON
Murdock - Rogue (Arcane Trickster), DEX + WIS expertise in stealth and thieves' tools
Faceman - Rogue (Swashbuckler), DEX + CHA expertise in deception and persuasion
It just might require the DM to think harder about encounter planning and for the players to be a lot more creative!
I think them being a squad, accused of a crime they didn’t commit and on the run from authorities is key. An Everton setting has real potential as the framing happens during the last war.
BA cannot be a Dragonborn or Goliath. He needs hair.
