GM seeks lv. 1 characters for an experimental D&D 5E game involving a continental battle between super powers similarly to WW 1. It will be action driven and mission based. The setting will be technically home brewed, but heavily inspired by D&D lore so as to not conflict with any official continuity/canon.
Premise: The Three Crown Alliance and the Central Union are at war. The conflict began after a political extremist assassinated the leader of the Central Union during a political rally. The crisis activated several mutual defense pacts and treaties. Now the continent of Drexara's two superpowers find themselves locked in a bloody conflict of attrition.
In an attempt to turn the tide, the Three Crown Alliance (TCA), a federation of three monarchies, initiated the Volunteer Corps. These are small squads of specialists (warriors, clerics, druids, bards, etc.) tasked with supporting regular troops by carrying out clandestine operations. They are relatively untrained, given minimal support and often undisciplined. But they make up for this with their individual experiences and class expertise.
Your character will be member of one such volunteer group, named after the province in which it was founded. Lithmark sits on the frontier of the TCA and is currently on the front lines. It is racially diverse, and home to a wide array of factions and professions, the "melting pot" of the continent. The other members in the group represent all walks of life and trades. They will need to work together to find common ground and end the War of All Wars.
Game Flow: The corps will operate out of a field barracks called the Club (it will be detailed later). It is on the Marhelm-Vigoric Line, a hotly contested section of the front, named after the two generals fighting over it. (Marhelm for the TCA and Vigoric for the C.U.) The Corp's C.O. will be Col. Bitterhorn, a battle hardened Dwarf veteran and warrior. Volunteers will get their assignments from Bitterhorn and report to the field to carry them out.
To know what you're getting into before you enlist: This will be a modular, action-driven, mission based game and fantasy war sim. Think of it as a sword-and-sorcery Call of Duty. Or to use movie examples, Inglorious Basterds, Kelly's Heroes and The Dirty Dozen. I will use grid based maps and tokens to illustrate battles and post their images for reference. The campaign will be dynamic, using rules for mass battles, to simulate which way the war is going and base missions on that. I'll try to create a map that will show changing lines and occupied territory. There may or may not be an overarching plot, depending on which direction the game takes.
Character development and interactions can take place between missions at the club. Service in the Volunteers is as the name implies, voluntary. Characters are free to come and go at any time. You can come in, participate in a mission, and go, without missing out on a grand plot.
What I'm Looking For as GM: As this is an experimental game, I'm playing fast and loose. Don't want to knock anyone over the head with a lot of rules and restrictions. If you've RP'ed for any length of time you know the drill. I'll consider any race/class and character concepts for approval. However, the game will be told from the perspective/side of the TCA and the Lithmark Volunteers in particular. I am open to any and all ideas for missions, scenarios, world building elements and NPCs.
Looking for a minimum of five players, but will consider more. I'm part time, and on the PC frequently, so I should be able to check in various times of the day. Posting frequency should be at least once a day if at all possible, as there may be a good deal of rolling and battling, but it can of course be scaled to the participation/posting rate of the game. A few other world building notes below:
Rank System(based on character level.) Characters are promoted to the next highest rank with every experience level achieved, unless they request to remain at a lower rank for whatever reason.
Level 1: Volunteer
Level 2: Private
Level 3: Private 1st Class
Level 4: Lance Corporal
Level 5: Corporal
Level 6: Sergeant
Level 7: Staff Sergeant
Level 8: Sergeant 1st Class
Level 9: 2nd Lieutentant
Level 10: 1st Lieutenant
Level 11: Vice-Captain
Level 12: Captain
Level 13: Major
Level 14: Lt. Colonel
Level 15: Colonel
Level 16: Lt. Commander
Level 17: Commander
Level 18:Field Marshal
Level 19: Grand Field Marshal
Level 20: Lt. General
Every subsequent level to a maximum of 25 will have the rank of 1st star through 5th star General, where 5th Star General is Level 25.
Tech Level: High Medieval / "Clock" or "Gear"-punk fantasy setting. No firearms or non-magical explosives (magical wands, staffs, bows, crossbows and projectile spells, etc. take their place). Primitive, magically powered vehicles along the lines of Great War era tanks may exist, but will be rare. On the fence about air power, depending on whether or not it might unbalance the game. If it exists, consider it rare and still in its infancy. Airships and single seat fighters are valuable assets that are being used sparingly, as more are constructed, for now. Artillery consists of advanced trebuchets, ballistas and catapults.
In keeping with the WW 1 theme, trench warfare is the norm. Bitter pitched battles are fought for mere yards at time. The war strains the populations and resources of both sides, turning the pressure up to win a decisive battle, hence where the Volunteers come in.
Feel free to ask any other questions/concerns you may have. See you at the front.
This sounds like a lot of fun! Whenever I get home from work I will edit this post with my character concept. Would you like for applicants to roll for their stats or use point buy/standard array?
Here is my character:
Name: Berak
Class: Paladin
Race: Half-Orc
Background: Soldier
Backstory: Berak was born to slaughter is foes. At a young age he was brought into the military and trained to do just that. After years of hard training he was pressed into the military, where we start this young half-orc's story.
Reserved - Already thinking about an Oath of the Crown Paladin here. Will come back and edit post with concept after work tonight.
Changed my mind, wanna go ahead and bring this concept out of the dust.
Name: Lord Dameion Arlon of Kenney
Race: Human (Non Variant)
Class: Barbarian (Eventually Path of the Zealot)
Background: Noble (Knight)
Backstory: Lord Dameion was raised much like other nobility under the TCA, with proper schooling, but he never excelled there. However he was always a master swordsman and his ability to face fully armored combatants unarmored himself always lended itself to being a sight to see. So much so that it caught the attention of his childhood crush. He began the appropriate acts of wooing the young lady but his father stepped in and crushed the thought of their marriage, saying it was an improper match, that Dameion needed to set his goals on a more esteemed match. One night Dameion's butler brought grave word that the young lady had been kidnapped, her father and mother were petitioning Dameion to find the young woman and defeat her kidnappers. Dameion was to just that but before he could leave his families estate his father caught word of his call to action and had the family guards restrain Dameion. The young lady was never retrieved, and without the money to pay the kidnappers the young lady was put to death. Dameion received word and immediately felt his soul shatter, he flew into a rage and assaulted his father who threw him out, telling him to return when he was ready to apologize, but Dameion had no intention of returning. He instead went to the nearest barracks and enlisted himself in the military as a volunteer, he would make enough money on his own in order to pay to find the men who killed his beloved and then he would slaughter each and every one of them himself.
Personality: Lord Dameion is mission oriented, goal driven, and acts as a mercenary, if there is gold to be had then the danger doesn't matter.
The slight half-elf in the cell before you pushes a lock of light brown hair off his forehead, and throws a smirk in your direction, framed by a thin moustache and beard. He learned to lie as soon as he could talk, learned to steal as soon as he could run. Thrown in prison for fraud and extortion in the Lithmark area, Balian was approached by Col. Bitterhorn with an offer: rot in jail, or join a group of volunteers with specialist skills to help turn the tide of the war. Another smirk, this time at the word 'volunteers'. Not wanting to linger any longer than necessary in jail, Balian accepts the offer. A warzone can be a very confusing place, and confusion can be used to create opportunities for anyone with the right skills.
In a previous war between orcs and elves, the victorious elves found a half-orc baby after one battle. Rather than kill him, they thought it would be more amusing to raise him as an elf. This backfired, as it left him a bit unhinged (dump stat CHA), and he became fanatical about his devotion to Lliira, elven goddess of joy, wealth, and festivities. In other words, Drusk will happily smite enemies with his mace (which he named "Joybringer"), quickly loot the bodies, and use the gold found to throw big parties and feed the poor. The elves of his village have long tired of their "joke", and have persuaded Drusk that he needs to travel (far, far away) to bring joy and healing to the front lines for the Lithmark Volunteers.
Question on the rank/level system: Leveling is normal, but the "rank" will be at that level or lower, yes? In no sane situation should Drusk ever be in command. :-b (Nevermind, read the rank instructions more carefully.)
Beegred Thornpost - Lvl 8 Halfling Ranger - Out of the Abyss by Kerrec Drusk - Lvl 8 Half-Orc Life Cleric - The Long Road: Dragon Heist by Mingofaust (player & current DM) Hunferho Aelorothi - Lvl 5 Half-Elf Bard/Rogue - Baldur's Gate: Descent Into Avernus (by Pokepaladdy) DM - Frontier City of Nunkreet (ended)
Will content sharing be enabled, or should we just build out of what we have?
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Playing in: Shepherds of Truth - Thomas Roth, Shepherd of Mystra Aerovail, Cities in the Sky - Aidan Burke, Smuggler The Missing Schema - Trigger, Morgrave Trap-Breaker Echoes of the Past - Einar Barruk, Fight Club Brawler Once in Waterdeep - Nagao Jun, Windwise Wanderer
Sure, I've never done content sharing before. If there's anything on my end to do for that, please let me know. Like the Drusk character, Quasimodal. Looks like he'd fit right at home. I'm currently looking for some good free map creation tools if anyone has any suggestions. I made a quick mock up of the Club to work with, while I look for something better.
Born in the Alliance province pf Lithmark, Liakrana was raised to protect the land, eventually joining the rangers, Liakrana will do whatever he can to protect his homeland
Looks good somered. So we've got Liakrana, Drusk, Lord Dameion and Balian so far. Good start to a crew: cleric, barbarian, sniper and rogue. Looking forward to seeing how the team gets along :D
This looks like a lot of fun, so count me as interested if you're still looking for players! :)
Name: Lord Ignatius Madaran
Race: Human (Variant or Standard, not sure)
Class: Wizard (Will go Evocation)
Background: Sage/Noble
Appearance: A slight, dark-haired man with bright blue eyes and a face that might be handsome if not for the burn scars and the missing eyebrow that gives him a strangely lopsided look.
Basics of Backstory (will build on this if possible): The Madaran family is relatively...well known...for their beliefs in the proper use of magical power, and Ignatius is no different. He grew up in an environment that was perfect for improving his natural intelligence and knack for magic. However, Ignatius was never really sure of what his particular brand of magic could be used for in society...until the war started. Suddenly faced with the opportunity to improve his magic in a fast-paced environment and help his country by doing so, Ignatius enlisted as quickly as he could. After all, there might be hardships, but he could bring hardship upon his enemies, too.
Personality: Ignatius is a nice guy, sure, and he's very smart, sure, but he's also got a bit of an...obsession with fire and a reputation for loving to use it.
Backstory: Thalvos seeks to bring honor and glory upon his clan with victory on the field of honor or die in the attempt. While the normal field could offer such the chance, but due to his abilities that put him above his peers, the volunteers offers him a much better chance for a single dwarf to change the history of the world with a single stroke. Raised from a young age has led him to have a strong conviction to protect those who are unable to save themselves, his selflessness driven to almost a self-destructive level in the case of pass battle, but he always makes sure he is between his allies and his foes.
Personality: A dwarf with a bit of a hero complex he seeks to ensure that his allies go unharmed, and that he is in the front lines where all can see his fighting against the enemy.
Welcome Thalvos. I put together the campaign map. The dotted line represents the Marhelm-Vigoric Front. The Lithmark Volunteers have been strategically positioned in a critical part of the front, where the TCA is currently trying to break through.
After you've created the campaign and invited the players, if anyone (DM or player) has a Master Tier subscription, they can toggle content sharing, then anyone can share whatever they have. (I don't have a subscription, but could offer XGtE to the group if sharing was enabled.)

I'll give character creation a little more time before I start. Need character sheets for Thalvos, Lord Dameion and Ignatius. I've bookmarked the rest so far.
If you have room for one more my character is below.
Name: Tempest Class: Druid (Circle of Moon) Race: Water Gensai Background: Hermit
Background: I grew up in a small coastal village of seasoned fishermen. As i matured to 8 years old they began to teach me the art of spear fishing. Over the next 10 years i honed my skills and became one with the water and all the creatures in it. My father taught me respect for the water and its power. Hi Forgoil, really interested in the concept, thinking of rolling a a rogue, along the lines of a spy/interrogator.
Balian Ibelin

Half-elf Rogue
The slight half-elf in the cell before you pushes a lock of light brown hair off his forehead, and throws a smirk in your direction, framed by a thin moustache and beard. I'd like to sign up. (Kelly's Heroes sends out a lot of positive waves, man.)

Once in Waterdeep - Nagao Jun, Windwise Wanderer

Hopefully its not too much of an eyesore, but my resources are limited. I'm a bit tired, misspelled the TCA as TCU in the legend.
I was looking over the FAQ.
