This is a D&D 5e role-playing adventure for well-meaning 1st level characters.
After a dusty day on the Long Road, you’ve stopped for the night at the Dashing Satyr, a small inn and shop a day’s travel north of Waterdeep. The owner is a human Shou woman who has rented you rooms, and one of the barkeeps has just delivered your meal when the door flies open, and a Tiefling woman—red-skinned with large curling horns, dressed in common clothes and a little wild eyed—bursts in. She looks about wildly at the patrons, most of whom are locals, and says, “You should all be ashamed! Scaring a woman what’s done nothing to you! I put up with your looks and your lies, but you’ve all gone too far now.” She looks to the half-orc behind the bar and says, “I need a room tonight, I daren’t go back home!”
The barkeep looks helplessly at the owner, who stomps forward from where she was speaking to patrons at another table. “There’s no room left, Criella,” she says. “I’ve given the last to these travelers,” and she indicates you all. “You need to go home and stop making a scene.”
The Tiefling snarls at her, “You’re as bad as the rest, Wan Bai!” Then her demeanor changes. “I can’t… I can’t go back now. I’m afraid for my life, I just need a place for the night.”
The innkeeper shakes her head, adamant, “There are no rooms, you cannot stay here.”
The Tiefling turns her eyes to you. “Can you help me?” she asks.

You should really read all of the long and detailed posts that follow. But basically, they tell you I’m a nice person who plans an easy going game and likes to role-play more than anything. To join the game (you really *should* read the follow-on posts below) you just send me a character proposal privately. I will pick players and let everyone know what’s up.
What this game will be like
We will be playing “The Cottage on the Long Road” by Travis Legge, available from the DM’s Guild. Please don’t buy it to read it ahead of time. But do buy it after to support the author!
This is a short, 1st level adventure I’ve run for my IRL group as a gathering adventure. I do not necessarily intend to use it as a springboard here (though it would dovetail nicely into Dragon Heist, so maybe).
I’m running this game to get experience as a message board DM, and to try out a declare/act/speed initiative format to see how it works in asynchronous message board play. But really this should be a pretty standard online message board D&D game, but shorter than most. IRL it took us less than two sessions.
Declare/act whatsit speed?
Yeah, so in my IRL group, we’re using a declare/act model for initiative. Basically, as I envision it working on the message board, when we are in combat, or any situation really where characters are acting simultaneously, I will ask players to declare their intended actions, and to roll the required rolls up front. When everyone has declared and rolled, I will collect and narratively describe the results.
We will only roll initiative when it is required by circumstances. One round is just six seconds, after all, and the combatants aren’t politely taking turns, they are all acting at once. In the case of simultaneous actions that might cancel each other out (e.g., a sleep spell might affect a kobold before it gets to attack) I will then ask for an initiative contest. In these cases, I will apply some speed modifiers (as per the optional rules in the DMG) to keep with the “makes sense” approach of simultaneous actions. In the speed factor initiative rules, smaller creatures are quicker, heavy weapons are slower, high level spells take longer to cast, etc. It’ll be fine, don’t worry.
It’s actually not far off from how message boards games run now, except we often are waiting a long time for one person to finish their turn before others can declare their actions, which can make combat drag for days. I’ve been part of some discussions about how to make initiative order clearer in message board games, with no real solution. I hope declare/act will make combat run faster and be more fun. But we’ll see. You’ll be part of the experiment. You’ve been warned.
This is a long post, but full of wonderful detail… :)
What playing with me will be like
I’m a nice person, approachable, sarcastic, reasonable. I hope to lead you in a fun, entertaining game. That said, I want to be very clear up front about how I play, and what I expect from players. Not everyone will want to play with me, and that’s fine. Best we figure that out now.
What you can expect from my game:
Role-playing. There will be an emphasis on role-playing. Lots of role-playing. Have I mentioned the role-playing? I am interested in stories, and in building something fun together. Rules are for building a common framework, and dice are for adding anxiety/excitement, but role-playing is where I live.
Tone. I expect both in and out of game humor, and encourage it, but this is not an off-the-wall joke campaign. This is a traditional-style D&D game. We can wink at the fourth wall, sure, but if you like having your characters reference Full House/Jay-Z/ESPN in game, you should probably look elsewhere.
Logical advancement. Experience will be milestone based, so basically whenever I say. We will role-play character advancement, if possible.
Mundane treasure. You will not find heaps of gold and gems, or legendary magic items. If you want a tricked out character with five glowing items that buff all the things, you will be disappointed.
Fun. In my opinion, a DM’s one job is to make sure all the players are having fun. I do not set out to kill characters. Though it is possible you will do the deed yourselves if you are exceedingly stupid. :)
Secret rolls. In order to keep the fun, I will likely not roll all monster actions in the forum interface. I promise it will only be to enhance the fun, and not to kill you all.
My rules:
My decisions are final, but I won’t be an ass about it. See “Disagreement’ below.
Disagreement is okay. I will be fair and friendly, and encourage you to appeal to me, privately, if you think I have made a mistake, or you disagree with something I have done. I could totally have forgotten about that thing your character can do! I don’t know all the rules. IRL I rely on my players to know stuff I don’t! I hope to never give you cause for grievance.
No player conflict. I will not allow character killing or in-game abuse. I am okay with character conflict in service of role-playing, but tread lightly. I consider in-game abuse and bullying tantamount to real life abuse and bullying and will not countenance it.
No evil characters.
Min/maxing discouraged. Of course you can, especially when using the point buy to determine ability scores. But your cunning action+hide=one-shot-kill will be role-played, and you may not always get to do it. Similarly, your three-multi-class dip-into-cleric-for-a-level-then-barbarian-for-a-feat juggernaut will have to be role-played, and likely won’t pass that test. Set your expectations accordingly.
Getting booted. I reserve the right to remove players if they are not contributing to the game. This can include, but is not limited to: If they stop posting regularly. If they are disruptive. If they violate DDB’s terms of forum usage. If they treat other players with anything less than the utmost respect. My game, my decision stands (rule 1).
Replacement players. I am happy to keep a waitlist of people interested, and reserve the right to add players as I see fit.
Game mechanics:
Daily posts. With the emphasis on role-playing (you grokked that, yes?), the pace may be slow, to give players time to interact. I hope that will provide for a richer experience. That said, I will expect players to post at least once a day. I will, of course, be understanding. Real life happens, after all. It is likely that a couple of players will post several times a day, sometimes carrying on whole conversations while others in the same room are strangely silent. That happens, and I will do my best to make sure everyone feels included.
The game will be on DDB. We will play in a public thread on the DDB forums (not this one, I’ll make a new one when we are ready to start). I prefer apps like Discord or Slack for their better handling of multiple threads and private messaging, but I want DDB to succeed, so we have to suck it up. Plus, the dice roller is soooo much better than anything on Slack or Discord.
You will make all your rolls in public on the DDB game thread. Yes, you have to use the /roll commands to roll stuff for your character. But I don’t. See “Secret rolls,” above.
Out of character posts. I find OOC posts fine, and I like to get to know the players. Requiring they be in a separate thread, or a private thread seems stilted and annoying, so feel free to post in the game thread, but preface OOC comments with “OOC” or something. Just like at the table, people make jokes and interact outside of their characters. Just make sure we know that’s what you’re doing.
Private posts. I like using private messages between DM and players for things only some characters would know. It is up to players to then communicate private knowledge (or not) in the game thread. I will expect players to communicate with me privately when in doubt.
Who am I?
I was born in the 70s and I’ve played face-to-face D&D since I was eleven, in the days of fighting men and elves as a class. In the 80s I ran some online forum-based games on CompuServe (those were the days when the internet was powered by hamsters). I work on the internet, so I’m online much of the time, but I work, so it’s not always convenient to post. A hot dog, while delicious, is not a sandwich. I read and write fantasy (and a little sci-fi). I still own my original copy of the Fiend Folio. When I was twelve, I used colored pencils to color in the monsters in the original Monster Manual. I’ve dabbled in stuff like GURPS, HERO, Traveller, Pathfinder, and Gamma World, but nothing ever stuck like D&D.
Whew. That’s a lot, but I thought you should know, before you decide to propose a character.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
ey/em/eirs, or they/them works, too (just not he). Role-playing since that keep on those borderlands. I love it so.
Send me a private message on DDB with your character proposal (a simple narrative, stats, a fully formed character sheet link… whatever). This is a quick adventure, so don’t feel you need to delve into your character’s family history or ancient grievances. That said, if you like that, go to town. I don’t mind.
I have one absolute requirement I mentioned above: your character must not be evil. More generally, I require the characters to be well-intentioned. Whatever their alignment.
We will use official D&D 5e rules, including all the supplements (Volo’s, Xanathar’s etc.). Abilities are determined with the official standard point-buy system.
Once accepted you will have access to those books here on DDB via content sharing if you don’t own your own. The details of your character are not important in the proposal stage.
Homebrew items/backgrounds/etc. will be considered on a case by case basis, so make your case if you want something.
2. Send me a PRIVATE message with your proposal by the deadline below
If you are interested, please do not post a character proposal publicly. There is no “first come, first served” so you do not need to rush.
Deadline: character proposals should be submitted no later than Monday, November 5, 2018
Game start: expected the next week, give or take
3. Then you wait to hear from me while I decide who to invite
I will look at your proposals and may ask you questions. At some point, I will decide who to invite to the game. This is what I am looking for:
Is your character interesting to me? I assume it is interesting to you.
Do you communicate well in writing? Not too succinct, not too florid. For better or worse, online asynchronous role-playing is defined by writing, and writing can sometimes be misconstrued (see: social media).
Do I like your forum avatar? No, I’m kidding. But there *will* be other, less determinate reasons why I do or do not pick people. Sorry.
You do not need to be experienced with D&D, or with playing by forum post.
You do need to have a basic (free) DDB account and room for a character.
Once I decide, I will reply to your private messages and let everyone know what their status is:
Accepted. I will tell you how to proceed.
Waitlisted. There are only so many I can have in the game at one time. Online games have a lot of real life attrition. If someone drops out, I will contact people on the waitlist, and you can join then, or tell me to piss off.
Not accepted. I may not accept your proposal, and reserve the right to do so without needing to explain myself.
4. If accepted, *this* is when you’ll need an actual character.
We will be playing D&D 5e rules, with all the official options (Volo’s, Xanathar’s, etc.). If you are accepted, I will send instructions and a campaign link. You will then create your character and link it to the campaign. Depending on your origin and backstory, we will introduce the characters to each other, and set the stage for adventure.

Replies on this thread will NOT be considered proposals. You have until the deadline, so take your time, acceptances will NOT be on a first come, first served basis.
Proposals are due no later than Monday, November 5, 2018

This is a really short adventure. Again, it took my IRL group less than two sessions to run, so I'm not sure the campaign setting is going to come up really (maybe in your planned background?). If that's important to you, you could place it about the same time period as the Dragon Heist adventure.
My knowledge of the Forgotten Realms is pretty spotty, I wouldn't call it vast at all.
No, other settings should not be considered. There's just no background to support either setting. I mean, maybe a free-willed iron golem could be statted like a warforged, but that seems pretty exceptional, so, probably not. One of the NPCs has a tie to Kara-Tur, but again, it's not likely to factor into the adventure.
Did that answer your questions?

Yes, those are pretty exhaustive answers, thank you.
Another question: are you planning on doing more adventures after this one? I would like to find someone to play those published by WotC (Tyranny of Dragons, Elemental Evil, Rage of Demons, etc.) in PbP format, and you seem a good DM by what you have wrote here.
I will think about them and decide whether or not I will join your adventure. In any case, good luck with your game.
Thanks. I have not made up my mind about whether I'll continue after this one. This is testing the waters for me, which is why it's so short. I want to see how it works from the DM side, and if I can make the things that trouble me better, like the extended amount of time it takes to run encounters in an asynchronous medium. So, jury's out on whether I run another game, whether the group of players that end up in this one end up in another one, etc.
I will say, I bought Dragon Heist with the intention of running it with my IRL group, read about half of it when one of the guys said he was going to be playing it with his other group. I'm now running Tomb with my group instead, but I do want to run Dragon Heist at some point. So there's that.

Hey all. Thanks for the interest! I have a dozen or more interested people so far, but the day's not over yet! Keep em coming. I really do appreciate the effort and interest people have put into this. I'll only be taking four players (maybe five?) on this adventure, but am overwhelmed by your generosity in wanting to play with me.
Deadline is the end of day today, Monday, November 5, 2018.
Tomorrow, Tuesday, I'll be spending all day manning a voter information table (how to vote, where to vote, sample ballots, etc.), and with all this advance voting going on I expect to have plenty of downtime to review all the characters and make a determination. But that means you might not hear from me until the end of the day.
Thanks again!

Thanks to everyone who submitted a character for this game. We only got the last player signed up last night, hence the delay in announcing to others that their characters were not selected. My apologies if anyone felt slighted, I know radio silence doesn't feel great. I'll be contacting everyone individually today.
Some stats that might be of interest to others running games... There were 15 submissions (over a four day span over a weekend). Four of them were druids, which I find fascinating, since I've never seen the appeal (but I will look into it now!). Only one was a fighter, and there were only two rogues. Only one suggested a multi class (though, as an advertised "short" adventure, maybe there wasn't much call for planning far ahead). Only one wanted to do "something funky" and that wasn't that funky. Ten were male characters, one was unclear (and, math: four were female).
Thanks again to everyone for your interest. I am humbled.
