So, looking to recruit 4-5 players for a Waterdeep: Dragon heist pbp. First time dming a PBP - I’m pretty confident but if I mess up pls let me know.
General points - IC in these forums
- OOC in Private message
- Theatre of the mind, so you’ll only see maps if your character sees a map. Please ask questions about the environment if necessary and make it clear what you intend to do. I have no intention of blocking you from doing cool things or making you waste your turn. I will do my best to describe the environment and make sure you don’t feel lost or inexplicably have your ranged character in melee.
- Standard initiative - Post combat in any order, adding in any conditionals - results of the round will be narrated after all actions are posted.
- Milestone levelling
- Pls post at least once per day, or give notice if you’ll be away. My timezone is GMT but my sleeping pattern is odd, so time zones don’t matter much to me.
The Campaign
- City based, more investigation than hack and slash.
- Based in Forgotten Realms, Waterdeep specifically.
- Levels 1-5
- You all meet in a tavern...... yeah but this tavern is lit though!
- Can buy most things in the city, message me if there’s anything you really want that your character might not know about.
Character creation
- Focus on RP, so a let’s make some memorable characters :)
- Rolling ability scores encouraged, (4d6 drop lowest, rerolled ones) you can use point buy or standard array if you like.
- You can use the heroic chronicles for Forgotten Realms if you like - will decide when team is chosen if we keep fateful moments or not.
- level 1 characters, any official source. UA..... ask me first.
- Why is your character in Waterdeep? what’s their connection to the city? Are they affiliated with a noble house, a guild, or a faction? Do they have friends or family in the city?
- Bonus points if you find ways your characters might know each other - will definitely make me want to pick both characters more.
- All alignments are fine, just don’t be CE IRL. And the law is a thing.
pls let me know if I’ve forgotten anything, or if you have any questions, ta!

Trani has always been the black sheep of her family, and the final FINAL straw for getting herself exiled [oh, sorry, "sent off to see the world and maybe TRY TO GROW THE **** UP" as her father put it] was a teeny tiny little affair with one of the heirs of her family's rival house. She's new to Waterdeep and is only beginning to become aware of the various factions at play, and given all of the politics she grew up with, she has done her best to stay out of it. Still, a girl has gotta work, and she's more than willing to play the game as necessary to survive and thrive.
She's quick, clever, and charming. Like most gnomes, she loves to tinker and create in her down time, though Trani prefers to create objects that make music rather than some of the "toys" others make.

Favorite food: Salted pork—rarely are common folk able to eat meat at all, let alone fresh meat. Thus, salted and pickled pork is a great delicacy among peasants and mercenaries alike. Mysterious Secret:

Name: Quildor Aluin Erwarin Race: High elf Class: Sorcerer Background: Noble Backstory: As the second son in the house of Erwarin I have not hade to live up to the expectations of papa in the same way as my older brother. I have been left to develop my own interests which very much includes fashion, parties and keeping up with the latest news from the court and the other noble families. The family legend says that many generations ago the moon Goddess inflicted my family with magic as she thought my ancestors too prideful. It is seldom that magic manifests in the bloodline but to papa’s horror it seems as I have the gift. Even if it is a tad ... unstable.
To my biggest horror papa have decided I now need to contribute to the family. He’s sending me to one of the human cities, where I’m supposed to meet up with one of papa’s contacts.

Yeah use the variant! We’ll only use them if everybody’s on board with them anyway - I’m fairly new to using the chronicle but I made a character with it in another pbp and enjoyed the process - so I forgot that that was a variant.
If you put a roll in before another one it changes your later rolls every time you update - it’s a pain, makes it difficult to put in a well organised chronicle. But it’s not that deep, it’s mainly for inspiration anyway, you can change any of it if it doesn’t fit your idea

You fell asleep in a forest and awakened in the court of the fey, where you were made to serve the fickle Archfey for a decade. When you finally managed to escape, it was as if no time had passed. You have proficiency with the Deception and Performance skills.
Nah, I just said people could use it if they want, I think it’s fun if you don’t have an idea for your character - you can just go without if you want. The fateful moment - if people want to use it we will, so maybe roll one up if you like but by no means is it necessary

Name: Omen Race: High Elf Class: Monk Background: Knight of the Order of the Unicorn Backstory: Omen was born in Waterdeep. He entered the Order at an early age, both his parents are members of the order. Omen loves his home and Waterdeep and hopes to live here for the rest of his long life. In grand fashion, he has made his way to this tavern in hopes to join a group and gain honor and glory for himself and for the order itself.
Backstory: Zeekrik is the youngest of 4 children from a family up in the Ten Towns region where his family owns a farm. He was a very curious child, always trying to find something new, up until the accident. He stumbled upon a portal to another world, where he got trapped and forced into servitude for a decade. He eventually escaped, but when he got back, no time passed in the real world. He eventually left home for Waterdeep, hoping to be able to become a private investigator of some sort.
Alright, I think I got a gist of the character I want.
Name: Dneevar Hakannthielion Race: Dragonborn Class: Barbarian Backstory: Born the youngest of 7 children, Dneevar never knew his father, and his family never talked about him, so he always assumed his father was dead. His family was not well off, so from a hatchling, Dneevar had to labor to provide for his family. Although based in the Korinn Archipelago, the family frequently traveled to nearby Alaron during festivals and market days. During one such of these festival times, a Waterdhavian noble had visited Caer Callidyr, and out of desperation for the benefit of his family, the young Dneevar pickpocketed the noble, stealing a pouch of gold pieces, a watch, and the noble's signet ring. This allowed his family support for the next year, what would have been the hardest year of their lives. Because his father was missing, Dneevar's two oldest brothers committed to supporting his mother and the rest of the family, while the rest of the family went off to make names for themselves. The third child in the family, Dneevar's oldest sister Kalik, became a Waterdhavian scout, and would occasionally visit the Moonshae Isles on missions. She would always stop by and check up on Dneevar and the other younger siblings. Her twin brother Kashak, however, went to Neverwinter to study the arcane. His other two siblings traveled to Baldur's Gate and were never heard of by the family again. When the time came for Dneevar's coming-of-age, he decided to travel to Waterdeep and live with Kalik. While in Waterdeep, he was selected to be a night watchman one night. He enjoyed it enough that he signed up to take part in the city watch full-time. During his off-duty times, he took up education and weapon training lessons with a nobleman tutor, who (unbeknownst to either of them) was the one Dneevar had stolen from years before, but neither recognized the other, despite the "wanted" posters still hanging up around Waterdeep. One time his watch duties sent him out into the wilderness without the city to investigate a certain minor incident. As he was traveling, he came across a large footprint with a runestone smashed into it. Dneevar let his curiosity get the better of him, and as he touched it, he briefly grew to a giant size, then shrunk back down. Still feeling the giant sensation hours later, he contacted his arcane-studying brother to see if he could investigate the footprint. A day or so later, they set out to the same spot, and the footprint was gone. Kashak thought he had made the story up, and began to head into Waterdeep, and Dneevar grudgingly followed. However, on their return, they were ambushed by wolves, though being teamed together, they were able to take down most of the wolves, Dneevar with his blades, and Kashak with his magic. However, the last wolf found itself between Dneevar and his brother, and leapt onto Kashak and began to attack him. As Dneevar came in to stab the wolf, it dodged at the last second and Dneevar ended up accidentally stabbing Kashak almost fatally, though Kashak thought he had done it on purpose. Dneevar took Kashak to the local healers, and thinking that his brother was going to die, said his final goodbyes. His brother survived, but Dneevar felt constant remorse after the incident, although Kashak sought for revenge. Dneevar moved on to business as usual soon enough. A few years later, Kashak returned for his bout of revenge. His mind twisted with rage, Kashak mauled and tortured Dneevar, using new, powerful magic he had recently discovered, and left him to die. As Dneevar lay dying, he was discovered by a young healer who managed to revive him and restore him to health. Scarred by the experience, Dneevar took leave of his city watch duties to allow his mental health to recover. Not two weeks later, he finds himself in the Yawning Portal tavern sharing a drink with an old pen pal and enjoying the music of “Threestrings” the local bard to liven himself up. Who knows where this could take him?
