A small village nestled in a valley surrounded on three sides by mountains, and settled within a forest. It would be a quiet, idyllic place far from the eyes of the nation… But recently, it seems something is stirring within. Mysterious deaths and disappearances have come to the village, of both animals and the townsfolk, and the promise of an adventure calls for thee!
A mystery campaign primarily focused on the narrative, but with the intention of mid-to-high lethality in combat during bigger battles. This campaign will be using a number of homebrewed monsters as yet untested in combat, so some tweaks may be made on the fly as deemed necessary by me.
General setting is “Forgotten Realms-like,” in that it is taking place on an alternate Toril where the many different races have a place, even if they are far from native to the world. The campaign area specifically is restricted to the mountains, the valley, and the grasslands towards the mouth of the valley around the village of Drefeld, which is located on an island somewhere near the Sword Coast, but under the jurisdiction of the human nation, Valgrand.
Character Rules:
Try to be some measure of Good, the village needs heroes even if those heroes are really only in it for the money :P
Any WotC published race and background is allowed, except for Ravnica backgrounds and Eberron House Agent backgrounds (due to not being on Ravnica or Eberron)
Starting Level: 1
Milestone Leveling
Standard Array or Point Buy
Feats will be allowed in the campaign, and Variant Humans still start with a free feat as normal.
All classes are allowed (yes, including Blood Hunter and Gunslinger)
Normal Class and Background Starting Items.
No UA at this time.
No, you cannot use Artificer’s Repeating Shot on the Exandria guns.
Please link your character sheet for approval, with something of a character backstory (like, a tweets’ worth). Please remember you are all starting at level 1, y’all aren’t exactly seasoned yet (even if you’re a soldier or a knight).
General rules: Play nice, keep it SFW.
I’m mostly active at night (US time), but will post as I can. If you all get really heavy into an RP scene, like during downtime or just discussing certain clues… well, I won’t interrupt, so let me know when y’all think you’re ready to move along!
Trying to get your physical content on Beyond is like going to Microsoft and saying "I have a physical Playstation disk, give me a digital Xbox version!"
Can i use the background creation tool fro. The Wildemount book or the swordcoast variant here on DnD Beyond?
How much time will there be between episodes? Is there a point in makeing a character with artisane skills or will it be more an on the clock kind of adventure?
I am thinking either an artificer or an Open Hand Monk.
Edit: I am at work at the moment, but i will create a charcter later when i get home.
Eh, you can use the Wildemount/FR version to help flesh out your backstory sure. It's mostly on the clock, but depending on what you're thinkin' of doing, there might be time for "artisaning" (I'd follow XGtE crafting rules, more or less).

Hello DevanAvalon, I still have to make my character but mind if I participated? I have looked at some play-by-posts and have been impressed by them. Maybe because in the end they look like a book and the players seem to get really interested with their characters and such. So yeah, minded if I came in for the ride?
Hi Devan. Would enjoy joining in on this adventure. I have my character below.
Name: Zack Finn
Race & Class: Human (Variant) Wizard (going Divination at 2nd - also, looking at more of a support caster, debuffing and locking down enemies rather than dealing heaps of damage)
Background: City Watch/Investigator
Backstory: After a number of years of service in the military, Zack has retired to the quiet life. During a raid, a number of his men were killed because of errors in his reconnaissance information. Haunted by this mistake and rather than signing on with the city watch, he moon lights as an investigator, with the hope of rooting out troublemakers and lawbreakers in his home town. Recently, he's taken to magic, having spent some time with an adept diviner and seeing its worth in his investigative endeavours, he continues to attempt to master it.
Fletcher was abandoned as a baby, left to die in the mountains. in the middle of the night, the blacksmith of the nearest village, Berdon, was collecting coal for his forge, when he came across the baby. he took him in and raised him as his own, teaching him how to use the forge, how to read and write and how to handle a blade- after all his main export was swords. however, when he was halfway through his seventeenth year, the blacksmith fell on hard times. a new, closer blacksmith had opened in the barracks, and his business was faltering. he started shoeing horses, and doing odd jobs, but he could barely pay for coal, let alone food. fletcher took to hunting, but sold most of the meat he gained. at least that which Didric didn't take. Didric was the son of the mayor. he was a stuck up bully, and enjoyed taunting fletcher. he started demanding cuts of the meat fletcher brought back, or he threatened to kick Berdon out of town. fletcher hated him, but could do nothing about it. one day a man came into town. he introduced himself as Sgt Rotter. he set up a stall at the market, and was selling items of questionable origin- orc teeth, goblin ears and the like. fletcher was uninterested in the grizzly prizes, but one item caught his eye. a book, that was bound in leather, and inscribed with runes- old runes, that blacksmiths use to identify their work. fletcher, Berdon, and the other blacksmith were probably the only people that could read them in town. after the market ended, the old Sergeant had sold everything but the book. when fletcher inquired about it, Rotter gave it to him for free. the man couldn't read, and he had nothing else left to sell. with his newfound prize under his arm, fletcher headed home. when he settled down that evening he remembered the book. he got it out and started reading. a lot of it he didn't understand, but he did glean from it is that the orc who owned this book was a shaman. a master in Hemocraft- the forbidden magic. he found a piece of parchment inside, which had a rune and an incantation on it. he absentmindedly read it aloud, and before he realized what he had done, therenwas a wave of heat and the book combusted. the sigil rose from the page and imprinted on his hand, which burned in pain. he rushed outside to put his hand in the snow, but in front of him was standing Didric and two of his cronies. they had just been passing by, but they saw the chance to torment fletcher and took it. a big mistake. fletcher shoved his hand out in front of him and a burst of flame hit Didric in the face. it took fletcher a moment to realize it came from him. he grabbed his saved money, his pack, and one of Berdons finest swords, and ran into the woods. he managed to escape the patrols, but does not know wether he killed Didric or not. he decided to travel, and try and make sense of his newfound magic
My idea for a character: Name: Gwen Ynwir Race: Human, Mark of Finding Class: Druid, will later go Ranger (Swarmkeeper dip if allowed, otherwise full druid or beastmaster dip) Backstory tweet: Gwen is a beekeeper but business has been bad lately as the nature seems oninous and weird, confusing the bees. She is looking into ways of stopping those problems Link: https://ddb.ac/characters/32012464/oAkEmX
Okay so here it goes: Name: Rahul Renne Race: Human Class: Fighter Backstory: I work has a farmer in the rural village. Knowing something is wrong inside my hometown ,possibly endangering the people, I will lend all the help I can to the heroes that come to aid.
Character Sheet: ddb.ac/characters/32017214/Td55P9
Short Backstory: Perfir was shunned within his village, disregarded for only being half of a full citizen. Despite this, he took a great interest in books from the library, eventually finding a spellbook containing juicy spells and dark secrets. His findings got him kicked out of town, so he began traveling the world to protect the innocent.
Religion is a funny thing when you think about it. You pray to some unseen force that you just accept is up there, who may or may not even bother listening, and if you've been a good boy or girl in their eyes, poof: something happens. It's like magic, except magic can be forced by those who know it. The gods you just have to trust. That is what I was told when I enrolled with the clergy: trust in the gods, trust in the clergy and all will be well. I'm not really much a man of the cloth, to be honest. Never bothered to learn more than the bare minimum to keep everyone happy. But there is something else I learned, something far more valuable:
Everyone has secrets. Even them religious folk. And the brighter they appear, the darker the shadow they cast. That's where I come in, 'cause we can't have those pillars of the community dirty their vestments. They are only mortal after all. A package delivered here, some money exchanged there, posing as the man so the missus doesn't know about the mistress, you name it. In short: I'm the kind of guy the church calls in when something needs to be done the church cannot openly be associated with.
Clerics have their gods. Paladins have their oaths. Me? I got a NDA and a holier-than-thou bureaucracy breathing down my neck.
And they just told me to book it to the village of Drefeld...
Vigil doesn’t remember much from his time before he joined the Ordo Iscariot, a secret organization that hunts down evil where it hides. That was one of the side effect of that potion they made him drink. "Let go of your past, so your enemies don’t have a weakness to exploit", they would say. They trained him to fight darkness with whatever gets the job done. Now, there’s been some trouble brewing in this little village called Drefeld. Some people going missing and winding up dead for no apparent reason. Vigil will get to the bottom of this.
*If some things need to be tweeked, I can work on that. Can also come up with other characters if need be

Backstory (brief): Grell's egg was found by a wandering human tribe, taken and hatched, and raised by the woman that found him. He was distrusted and treated with cruelty and disdain (think a reverse Tarzan, "beast" raised by humans). Nonetheless, as he aged and grew in height, strength, and prowess, Grell learned the Barbarian ways to hunt, fight, and survive. Some event causes a great fearsome beast to be led back to the village, where Grell faces off against it, forcing it off a cliff to its death. From then he's revered as a bit of a hero, with enemies becoming friends. All the warriors bond more, and trust him, and grow in strength as a result. But a yearning for doing good in the wider world pumps through his veins, so he says his goodbyes, gathers his things and sets out into the wider world to help.
He's a bit of a "gentle giant" with a fiery rage when he has to fight (but isn't necessarily an easily angered rage machine), with an innate need to do good. I originally concepted that he perhaps has an unconscious connection to Bahamut and his wanting to go into the world and do good reflects that.
A third player has been chosen. I'm giving it till tomorrow morning before I close this up!
