Intro
Back in 1st edition a group of friends got together and created a homebrew setting called Q’rath Set. Decades later that campaign setting has been the home to games run by three generations of players, one of them being my wife. With my father-in-law's passing away, the family decided that we would cobble together the mountain of disorganized notes and maps created over the years and actually turn them into a published book. To create new mechanics has been something of a family tradition, but to actually put them into a published work requires more play testing, hence this campaign.
Submission
To apply, post your character’s name, concept, calling, key factors about their backstory, and their first agenda and destiny (explained below). I’ll select submissions by February 18th.
The Setting
Being decades in the making, there's a lot of material that already exists to flush out the setting, and I can't really expect players to know all of it, or even most of it. It’s suggested that you read whatever parts are relevant to your character and whatever parts interest you, and ignore the rest, at least for now. Those parts are available in the links below. All of these are Google Docs and are open to comments, so please do feel free to comment on the docs themselves.
The broad Strokes are important to know about the setting are these; In the ancient past the cataclysmic event, called the Q’rath, damaged the world physically and mystically. The underlying structure of reality has been damaged, such that, in certain places or certain times reality is less than reliable, with certain laws being bent or suspended, or the walls between this world and another being thinner or porous, this does permit some stable travel between worlds, and thus peoples of many civilizations can be found Q’rath Set, as well as many stranger things.
The setting is pre-industrial, with steam power just becoming important. Technology similar to firearms exists. A series of global conflicts came to an end a generation ago, with large fleets of hot-air sky ships and conventional naval ships being decommissioned. This has led to the current era of piracy, as many of these decommissioned fleets left equipment and personnel with nothing better to do.
I will work with players to help integrate their characters into the setting.
The Premise
The group will contain five characters acting as the crew of a small sky-ship acting as privateers for the Iron Empire. Your charter permits you to raid orcish and goblin settlements of the Northern Plains, as well as any who don’t bear the colors of an established nation. Strictly speaking this allows for Lawful alignments (just barely). Evil alignments are allowed (just don’t go murder-hobo, as you’ll find the Narrative Milestone system won’t let you advance), and you really can play villains. Moderate amount of player-on-player conflict is allowed/encouraged.
What You Need to Know About the Mechanics
We're testing out a number of new rules, but the base system is the same. Here's a breakdown of general new rules / house rules:
Outside of combat, you can make any number of posts, but give players a chance to respond to anything they are likely to want to respond to. In combat, post no slower than once a day, and more often as your time permits.
To facilitate play by post, we won’t be rolling Initiative. You will have a set Initiative score, equal to your Dexterity plus you are Initiative Modifier. Ties are broken by the highest Wisdom score. Try to make sure you know when you act in a round.
You can have more than one instance of Inspiration at a time, with no cap. In terms of play style I often reward creativity with Inspiration. Both creative actions and evocative descriptions will often be rewarded. This helps take advantage of the play by post format, and helps to encourage the use of Flaws, Personality Traits, Ideals and Bonds. You can choose to use Inspiration after you see the result on a roll.
You can choose, once per encounter, to designate any failed roll you make as a bollix. A bollix is a fumble or critical failure. You can suggest ideas for what that bollix should be, though the form is ultimately up to the DM. Electing to take a bollix grants you Inspiration.
Character advancement will work differently. We use a variation of the Milestone system, explained here. Ignore references to page numbers and the book itself.
What You Need to Know About Character Creation
You’ll need to use the character sheet found here, for reasons that will become clear below. Save a copy, then share it back to me at elrinfable@yahoo.com. Leave editing permission open, so that I can add information to it as the game progresses.
Choose 2 backgrounds. You have the benefits of each. You do need to make these make sense together in your character's backstory. The backgrounds from any published book should work, if with a little tinkering in some cases. The custom background option from the player's handbook is also viable.
Classes are called Callings, with Subclasses called Subcallings. All classes from the player's handbook are viable, though please do not use (sub)classes from other books. Variant class options from Tasha’s Cauldron are acceptable (and encouraged for Rangers). There are also a number of new options for this setting, which you are encouraged to use, but not required to use. Feel free to submit feedback on these even if you don’t intend on playing them.
We will be using a different system for race. You do not mechanically have a race or ability score modifiers. Instead you can choose 5 Feats at character creation. These may or may not relate to your racial identity. These starting feats may be any of those from the new Feats list or from any sourcebook. You essentially build your race, and nothing stops you from being a human/dwarf/elf/dragonborn, or what-have-you. Any race that you feel you can represent with this system is acceptable. Similarly, you don’t have to have all the traits associated with your race, for whatever reason you feel like putting into your backstory.
You may have only one Species Feat, which must be selected first, if at all. This replaces the usual 5 starting Feats.
Where it says Race under the descriptive traits, put the race(s) your character identifies as, if any.
You can play as any race you can build with those traits, but if you want background info for the setting, the following races are new or have setting relevant info;
(I'll be adding links here as I write up each)
Hobgoblins - Numerically and socially dominant in the Iron Empire (where you are setting off from).
Bugbears - Very common. Not associated with their standard gods (or with any gods in particular in this setting). Also more respected in the Empire than is typical else where.
Arau - The Gnome-Spiders, numbers on the rise in the Deep Realm (this setting's alternative to the Underdark), due to the death of Lolth.
Chaszmyrians - The Deadfolk. 'Living' skeletons and zombies.
Dragonborn - Additional chromatic dragonborn related to Tiamat’s sister: Cyan, Indigo, Ocher, Pink, Violet.
Mawn - Urbane descendants of the Tabaxi, a housecat people.
Omolo - Ooze and jelly people.
Note that in this system Tieflings and Nephilim (the setting’s term for Aasimar), are not races, but qualities of heritage. Thus you are a member of another race with celestial or fiendish blood if you are a Nephilim or a Tiefling.
Let me know if you want more information on any of these.
Use the Standard Array for ability scores.
Hit points use the set amounts.
Start at level 3 with a chosen subcalling, no multiclassing to start with.
You start knowing up to two languages of your choice, plus any granted by other selections.
Starting Equipment + 1000gp, which you can spend ahead of time if you like, and one (un)common magic item from this list, or the DMG.
You have the option of starting out Proficient with Sky Vehicles. If you choose not to, take that as a Flaw. It will come up a lot.
Firearms are considered martial weapons. They are not considered starting equipment, but can be purchased with starting gold, as can their ammunition. Use the Renaissance Item table in the DMG for the appropriate stats. Explosive items from the Renaissance Item table can also be purchased, though no class has proficiency with them.

Alright, I'm thinking of playing a cannibal, but I must ask. Since we're starting at third level, is it unreasonable to assume that I would have a few trophies? If not, how many trophies may I claim, and of what type?

Bluepanther> This system doesn't use the normal character creation rules. You won't be able to use Beyond character sheets.
The Humbug> Let's say three significant trophies, with the highest CR being a 3. Otherwise no restrictions other than what's normally restricted by Diet.
Looking at the Reborn, there isn't an exact way to create them in this system. They're mechanically similar to the (Fleshed) Chaszmyrians, but the concept is a bit different. Chaszmyrians are new people who come into existence in the bodies of other dead people. They occasionally have flashes of memory from the previous inhabitant, so, as a way of staying close to the character you've written, you could play a character who thinks they are the previous inhabitant. It would require the character to have died pretty far southwest of where we're playing, but there could be a lot of excuses for that. It would rub other Chaszmyrians the wrong way for him to believe he is the goblin that originally had his body, but if he ignored that and didn't assimilate much of their culture, it may not matter to him much.
Alternatively, you could play a goblin who has been resurrected and was scarred by the experience.
Goods, services, favors, you name it. And all it costs is a pound of flesh(or biological components of equal value). This is the motto that Prometheus lived and worked by, for much of his life. His clients were the truly desperate, those with no money to offer, yet still rich in other forms of payment. For years he worked for his clients, growing his macabre collection, and growing himself as well. Bit by bit, stitch by stitch. He was born weak, defenseless, but like his namesake he stole what he deserved and became something else, something greater. He doesn't know when he stopped being a man. But it's clear that he did. He never truly died, but at some point, at some stitch, he stopped truly being alive. When one's body comprises almost entirely borrowed parts, they can't be considered a truly living being. He crossed over that line, and finally achieved his dream. He wasn't a man anymore, no, he was better. The gods themselves saw this, and they feared him, and so he was labeled unholy a monstrosity. But he knew the truth. Unfortunately, the authorities didn't. The moment he became undead, he could be detected by any passing paladin or cleric, and when they came to check out whether he was chazmyrian or mindless, rotting killer, his little flesh-for-favors operation was discovered. He has to flee with as much of his collection as he could bring along, leaving the rest behind to fester and rot. Now, having escaped, he seeks to rebuild his collection, and this little operation is the perfect operation. He always did like orcish flesh. It's tough, yes, but has a wonderful taste, when cooked right. Additionally, he finds its physical properties most pleasing, and a good portion of his body is orcish in origin.
And that's Prometheus. A bit macabre, yes, but what did you expect from a cannibal?
So, as you may have guessed, Prometheus is, in a way, both Frankenstein and his Monster. He possesses a massive, hulking body, stitched together from the borrowed flesh of his clients. To represent this, I've taken the awkward body, giant, lugger, and ASI(str) feats. Additionally, after incorporating so much dead flesh into his body, he's crossed the line from life to undeath, becoming something like a fleshed chazmyrian, but brought on intentionally, and he never truly died during the transition. This is represented by taking the chazmyrian racial feat. Also, I took the great weapon master feat, because Prometheus smash. His calling is, as you know, cannibal, and his subcalling is xenovore. Finally, his backgrounds are simic scientist, to represent his grafting, and failed merchant, to represent his life before this one.
And... I think that's all, really. So, I guess before I finalize the sheet, I must ask. Are you satisfied with this unusual, unnatural fellow? Or is it just a bit... too weird and nasty for the class?
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
"Ignorance is bliss, and you look absolutely miserable."
Well, taking the species feat means that you are a Chaszmyrian, which doesn't fit the character as described. Also, you're going to be on a ship working as a privateer, since that's the story premise. If the group's willing to work with you, that's fine, but that might take a little work. You'd want to tie that in somewhere. Who is he in an ethnic sense? He sounds urban or at least educated, but where does the giant come in? Did he alter himself bigger?
The idea was that he was similar to a chazmyrian, but not quite. A sort of... fabricated chazmyrian. Just as a chazmyrian is a consciousness inhabiting a corpse, so is he a consciousness, inhabiting a body made of many corpses, which he has built for himself. Really, it was just so I could get access to the undead "nature" feat, which really complemented the frankenstein vibe he had going on. If you insist, though, I will change it. As for where he comes from... I'm not entirely sure. Probably somewhere harsh, where the impoverished are common. A good hunting ground for his line of work. The giant part comes from him slowly changing and improving his body over time from the flesh donated by his clients, stitching himself into a patchwork giant. My goal with him is to sort of... subvert expectations. He's this hulking, ugly, stitched up brute, yet at the same time he's just as, if not more civilized than others. While his meals may come from questionable sources, he always insists on cooking them. He has perfect manners and a serpent's tongue(well, he had one, and was meaning to replace his with it before the incident). Doesn't mean he won't mash your skull in if you draw a blade on him, of course. He's only a gentle giant when he wants to be.
Also, as for tying him in with the group, he's just looking to add to his collection for the moment, and privateer work is a lot faster, if not as safe, as his previous line of work. What with all the shooting and stabbing and raiding that goes on. Later on, however, he might forge a stronger bond with the crew. In the beginning, I suspect that the rest of the group will not like him, but perhaps his personality will win them over, maybe it'll just creep them out more, who knows? Either way, he'll be rather useful, since he has a massive carrying capacity, and lift/drag/push weight, so that could be another reason for them to keep him around, weird as he is.
Well, I want to put a link to it in my campaign so that the people there can see it. Oh, btw, my destiny is submitting to higher powers of good and obtaining arcane magic (wizard) to help my cause against tyrants

"Ignorance is bliss, and you look absolutely miserable."
Well, I want to put a link to it in my campaign so that the people there can see it. Oh, btw, my destiny is submitting to higher powers of good and obtaining arcane magic (wizard) to help my cause against tyrants

The Humbug> I think that works. You could still take the Undead 'Nature' feat without being a Chaszmyrian.
Bluepanther512> You can link to your sheet, but if you look at the character creation rules there are multiple reasons why you can't use a Beyond sheet.
Ok...
