Update: I'm currently looking for one player to run through a solo Rime of the Frostmaiden campaign once it is released! If you are interested, please apply on this thread. If you've already applied and would like to apply for RotF, please post again to express interest.
For the past year or so, my partner and I have been playing one-on-one D&D, with me DMing and her playing, and she says it’s been one of the best D&D experiences she’s had. I got to wondering if the same would be true for online, play-by-post play. I’m looking for a handful of guinea pigs I mean players who would like to try playing in a one-on-one play-by-post campaign catered specifically to them. I’m looking for three players to start, potentially more if this catches on.
If you are interested in trying this experiment with me, please post:
The adventure you’d like to play. I have hard copies of all the published adventures to date, from the Starter Set to Baldur’s Gate, and wouldn’t mind running any of them..
A character idea. No need to have everything picked out for them just yet, just a rough idea is fine.
A short roleplaying example, three or four sentences long. This can be something you write specifically for this, or something you wrote for another game.
And, of course, since I ask you for one, it’s only fair that I provide an example as well. Taken from a recent in-person session...
Kraak looks down at the arrow lodged in his chest, and snarls. “You got close to my heart, elf,” he says, before grabbing the arrow shaft and snapping it in half, “but not close enough.” He tosses the broken shaft aside and charges at you, swinging his axe wildly. *insert a failed attack roll here* You nimbly roll out of the way of his blade, which gets buried in the earth beside you. *insert an Insight check here* You realize that Kraak is putting on a show for the spectators. You can see defeat on his face.
I'd be happy to participate. Perhaps a short adventure? I've never played Waterdeep: Dragon Heist and thought it would be fun with a streetwise solo character.
Paladin is probably a good all-rounder class for soloing. One rough character idea I have is inspired by the Blues Brothers. Criminal background but committed to go straight by holy mentor. Makes for a fun conflict between his 'old ways' and his new commitment to 'mission from god'. Maybe tiefling cos I've not played one of those yet, and they'd fit the class nicely.
Frank slipped quietly into the alley, scanning the shadows for movement, and spotting a familiar cloaked figure leaning against the wall. "Harkon!" Frank whispered. "Long time no see! You get me that information." The cloaked figure looked up: "Fraaank!" he drawled. "Good to see ye back in the game. I got yer information all right. Got a few little jobs ye might fancy too!" Frank smiled and waved his hand dismissively. "Thanks Hark, but I'm not doin' that stuff no more. Runnin' straight from now on". Harkon smirked and nodded, saying "Sure, sure, whatever you say, Frank" while handing over a small parchment with a single name inscribed. "And if yer plannin' to pay him a visit, maybe ye could drop this off while yer in that part of town. As a favor!" Harkon jingled a small pouch, then held it out. Pausing for a minute, Frank looked behind him once, then took the package. "Sure Hark. For old times sake, eh?" And with a knowing wink, Frank turned and slipped back into the street.

How does a red dragon blow out the candles on its birthday cake?
Wow, this is pretty cool. I'd love to try out a one-on-one campaign, perhaps Curse of Strahd? I don't know what you'll have to do to format such a thing, but it seems like it'll be a lot of fun.
I'd like to try out a cleric for the adventure. An old man, he's haunted by his past, the evil he's seen in his life and the people's he's lost because of it. He swore an oath to eliminate any evil he could find, but now he struggles to distinguish between good and evil and his commitment to his deity is becoming increasingly shaky. Now, he faces even more deadly and insidious creatures. Like the quote, “Beware that, when fighting monsters, you yourself do not become a monster... for when you gaze long into the abyss., the abyss gazes also into you.”
A roleplaying moment from a current PbP game I'm running.
Yes, John was a bartender, but he felt that his true occupation was one of a storyteller. He hungered for those late nights where some good ale would loosen the lips of a group of adventurers, who would share a harrowing tale of their travels down some dark dungeon or recount epic battles against creatures vile beyond imagination. He collected these stories in his mind, feeling as if it was his duty to pass them on. Those adventurers may fall to a future foe, but they would live on in his stories, inspiring a new generation. But when the cleric offered him a place in the adventuring party, his world turned upside down.
I am interested as well. I have done a solo game as the dm a few times with my father in the past and had fun. I've never gotten to be the player and think that it would be something really interesting to try. As for games there are a few I would like to try, namely Out of the Abyss since it is a campaign that I have started several tim s only to never get past the very beginning. Other then that I am very fond of Curse of Strahd or at least the Ravenloft setting.
My idea for a character I one I have used in a few ones shots in the recent past. He is a Kobold Gunslinger using the Critical Role set up. His basic story is until recently he served a red dragon that was killed by adventurers. He followed them and observed one that was using a gun. In the dead of night he snuck into the camp and stole it and the ammo for it.
Reelq growled as he quickly river behind a rock for cover, slamming the bullets into his gun as he slid to a stop. Taking a breath to steady himself he slowly stood up and fired off two shots at the closest goblin. As the bullets impacted with its chest the creature let out a grunt and then fell in a puddle of blood. Seeing his chance, Reelq moved to another rock, narrowly avoiding a javelin as it grazed the side of his pack. "Damned gobs... I just fixed that!" He shouted as another shot cracked out, hitting the last goblin in the neck.
Sounds exciting! I'd like to throw my hat into the ring, using Kindra, my fire genasi cleric/wizard. A humble blacksmith who glimpsed the awesome power of magic, divine creation, and the skill of the heroes of legend, and began to push further in her craft, intending to be the best of the best. Every project an opportunity to forge a new path, every client a potential patron of some adventurer.
As for the adventure I'd like to play, Out of the Abyss, Baldur's Gate, Dungeon of the Mad Mage, and Tomb of Annihilation are the big ones I haven't done yet (listed in order of preference, with OotA most desired). I've never done a one-on-one before and it should be a great experience.
RP Example:
The old blacksmith watched with interest as this young mage set herself to work. Magic was unfamiliar to him, at least in the context of his job. But this flaming half-elemental had managed to file down the week's task list in just a few hours. Most workers would have been dead-tired by the end, but he only saw a gleam in Kindra's eye as she quenched the final piece for the day and turned to him. "Anything else that needs doing, I'd be glad to help. Got anything?" she asks with a hearty grin.
I'd be interested in a one-on-one campaign. I do this with one of my friends for a homebrew campaign and it's been fun so far. I'd be up for Curse of Strahd, Dragon Heist or Princes of the Apocalypse.
I have a couple of ideas for a character. Was thinking a wizard, going either divination or transmutation path. The transmuter is a guild alchemist determined on finding some alchemical formula that has been long lost. While the diviner might be a charlatan selling his skills to the masses, promising to tell the future to townspeople, merchants and nobles alike.
Example post: The coppery skinned, slender dragon born sits at the bar, sipping occasionally as he scans the room. Just looking at him, you can tell he's the "more brains than brawn" type. He looks back and forth along the bar at the others sitting there - a gnome, a couple of humans, a goliath, and him a dragon born. He chuckles to himself, Almost the start of a bad joke... he thinks to himself. Finally curiosity gets the better of him and he turns to the gnome. "Good evening, miss gnome," he bows his head slightly, "I've seen you here a few days now. What brings you to such an... endearing little watering hole?"
Wow this is very interesting, I'd be glad to be a part of it. Hope there's still room, or you're at least accepting others!
Personally, I wouldn't mind Out of the Abyss, but sadly I know too much of that one :( so I guess Hoard of the Dragon Queen, Ghosts of Saltmarsh, or Tomb of Annihilation.
As for character idea, I've never done a Druid, so I'd probably go with that. Don't have access to many races on DDB so probably just a Human/Variant Human.
RP Example:
A dirty blonde-haired man sits at the bar, cup in hand, though he rarely takes a sip. He fears that too much to drink could land him in trouble, and not because he would be drunk. He takes another anxious look around the tavern, before determining that the merchant is not arriving tonight. Damn shame too. I need those supplies... Lar-Dun thinks to himself. He stands up from his stool and approaches the well. He looks down into it, and as a series of images flood back into his mind, he backs away, slightly pained. The hole reminds him too much of the endless void that the vile being who now holds sway over him crawled out of. He leans against a nearby post and watches the Goliath.

Characters: Lar-Dun Vanthaft - Human Warlock - Yawning Portal with Artymis, Moril - Tiefling Sorcerer - Dragondenn's Dragonlords, Paquinal Dalanthan - Eladrin Wizard - ShadowThorn's Out of the Abyss
Campaigns: Rod of Nankon, Darkness Reborn, Dungeonverse, Alycron - A Cosmic Horror West Marches (Co-DMing), One-on-Ones
If your still taking people I would love to give it a shot. I have never played by post and would love to try. I'm personally in a one on one campaign with my son. Were playing Tyranny of Dragons right now. It would be awesome to see another DMs style of how they handle one on one campaigns so I could learn and compare notes so I can evolve as a better dungeon master.
The three I would love to play are Tyranny of dragons so I could see how another DM would handle it. Rage of Demons, because I love the underdark. Last but not least would the starter set for me would be cool because I had to drop out of my first campaign due to family reasons and never finished it.
The character I would want to play would be campaign dependent but I have a character concept I have wanted to play for a while. The character is a hill dwarf dragon sorcerer. He once was a young red dragon who kept attacking dwarven temples dedicated to Moridan to make a name for himself. Unfortunately for him priests of Moridan were waiting for him in the next town he attacked and together they used their divine intervention to summon Moridan who then cursed the young red dragon to a form befitting his actions. Now he has to quest to please Moradin to become uncursed and become his true form once again.
Here's a roleplaying example:
Winston had never done this sort of thing before. He was a simple farm boy. His heart was pounding a mile a minute. Bump, bumpity, bump. He could hear his own heart beat pounding in his chest as he attempted to crack open the safe. Winston hears from somewhere in the back, "Hurry up Newguy! The guards are on their way!" Winston feels the surge of adrenaline and his mind focuses on why hes doing this. "For Natalie." He whispers under his breath. * Rolls slight of hand check* He hears as the last tumbler clicks and the safe cracks open.
If you are still taking/considering people I would love to play through an adventure or two pending your availability and the like I have played one on one a few times, though usually the DM had some DM pcs and I played two characters to flesh out the party a bit.
Honestly I am fine with any of them, though as I type this the idea comes to mind in particular it would likely work with Out of the Abyss
A Dark Elf shadow monk, who stole a relic which his family had said contained power that they had yet to unlock. Seeking to escape the miserable existence that was his being a male within the cruel matriarchy of Drow society.
The Dark Elf's eyes flicker open, slowly with a groan at first followed by a sensation of terror. Feeling at his face he felt the metal grafted into his skin, shivering a bit as he looked around the bleak cavern. Vaseari was no longer in an area he knew....and apparently this artifact he had stolen had some magic in it after all. He seeks out the nearest reflective surface, tracing the odd metal which was currently partly embedded within his forehead and cheeks, his dexterous fingers quivering lightly as he gulps hard. No matter where he was, his family could not find him, or the young shadow monk would find his end in the most miserable, horrific ways his sisters could possibly concoct. "I refuse....no I cannot go back now! Just need to look ahead and....find out wherever the hell this is....
Please put me on your waiting list since I'm sure you've already picked from the applications above. I playing in a 1-on-1 pbp for a while and loved it, but the DM got too busy and had to cancel it. I have a small request, though. I was allowed to play two characters — brothers — and that gave me a lot more RP opportunities within the adventure. It would be great if I could do that again.
Looking through the various sources, I'd be interested in embarking on either Dragon of Icespire Peak or Sleeping Dragon's Wake.
Backstory for Trayan and Pulmar Aberron:
Trayan Aberron is the firstborn of Johannas and Brier Aberron. Johannas was working as a carpenter in the small woodland community of Woodlea, a mostly-human settlement along the Neverwinter River in the northern part of the Neverwinter Wood. Johannas and Brier had been married just under a year when Trayan was born. Brier's pregnancy was a hard one, and they almost lost her during the birth. Trayan was unaffected by the hard birth, and Brier fully recovered after some months' rest. Despite their decision to avoid another pregnancy, another baby was conceived three and a half years later. Unfortunately, Brier did not survive the birth of her second child, Pulmar. Feeling unable to care for his two children alone, Johannas moved in with Brier's parents, Gregor and Bonita Nothstar, so Bonita could raise the boys. The Nothstars lived in a mining settlement in the Crags.
Gregor worked in a mine and was able to get Johannas a job in the mine. And so the family lived. As the years went by, Johannas spent less and less time with Trayan. He never developed much of a bond with Pulmar, who he ultimately resented for the death of his love. Gregor and Bonita, however, loved the boys very much. They fulfilled the roles of mother and father wholeheartedly.
The boys were very different from each other. Their age difference (four years) kept them from being very close growing up. Aside from looking different (Trayan is blond and Pulmar is dark-headed), Trayan was always very responsible and serious. He worked hard and took seriously any responsibility he held. He would often fuss at Pulmar for his tendency toward laziness, apathy and socializing. Pulmar always responded that Trayan was serious enough for the both of them.
When Trayan turned 18, he joined the regional militia. Their region was almost constantly under attack by orc raiders sent over the mountains that separated the two civilizations. Trayan did very well in the strict atmosphere of the militia. Unfortunately (or fortunately), because the harsh orc raids came often, the mortality rate for officers was high, providing many opportunities for advancement. Trayan was soon in command of his own small band of the militia. His second officer was a dwarf, Vodge Silverbeard. Trayan and Vodge became very close friends. Together, they were able to succeed in many ways others had not. For years, Trayan and Vodge worked together to bring safety and security to their region.
Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. During a particularly vicious attack, Vodge lost his life saving Trayan's. The loss was devastating, and Trayan began to lose his edge. He refused to connect with any other soldiers. He started playing it safe. His change was noticed by his superiors, and they forced him to withdraw from the militia after a seven-year term of service.
Trayan returned home. While he was away, both his birth father and Pulmar had left the home. Pulmar left home two years after Trayan at 16, later writing his grandparents that the alienation he had always felt from his father had intensified as soon as Trayan had left home. He had traveled to the coast and gotten a job on a ship. The letter said he was setting sail the next morning on a merchant ship, the Crimson Fin, and would write when he could. Occasional letters had come, painting a picture of adventure and revealing a boy growing into a man. Johannas had left without warning or a note to say where he was going only a few months after Pulmar.
When Trayan returned home, Gregor and Bonita were saddened to find him broken, sullen and resentful ... much the same as his father had been. Unlike Johannas, Trayan had become a drunk. The Nothstars tried to counsel their grandson, but he was deaf to their words. Bonita decided to attempt to get a message to Pulmar.
Trayan, 25; Pulmar, 21; Pulmar has been at sea for five years.
Looking back at the various letters she had received over the years, Bonita found three ports which were most often mentioned. She wrote three copies of a letter asking Pulmar to return home for a visit to perhaps help his brother, and sent them to the three ports. Six months later, Pulmar appeared on their doorstep.
Trayan had taken a job in the mine during the intervening time, but he still exhibited the same antisocial tendencies their father had. Pulmar was home, having quit his ship, to help the family. Much more responsible and confident than before he left, Pulmar also took a job in the mine and began to work hard to lift Trayan out of the funk he was in using tough love. Trayan was resistant, angry, apathetic, and everything in between. It look about six months, but Trayan began to show improvement. Pulmar forbid his brother to drink, which helped greatly both at home and at work.
Trayan was making great progress when something unexpected happened: The mine closed down. The Nothstars decided to stay in their small village and live out the remainder of their lives meagerly. But they told the boys they should strike out on their own. Trayan encouraged Pulmar to return to his life as a sailor, but Pulmar didn't want to leave his brother behind for fear he would backslide. Trayan has always been afraid of large bodies of water, so he could never be a sailor. The two have set out toward Neverwinter to find their place in the world, the younger brother taking care of the older brother.
The classes I used before were fighter and rogue, but I'm open to discussion.
And my writing sample, that is a bit more than just three or four lines ... I'm sorry:
The sound of the rushing river had been guiding the two men southeast for close to an hour. Despite the closeness of the trees and the almost constricting dampening of sound because of the foliage and natural softness, Pulmar marches on, looking back at regular intervals to make sure Trayan is keeping up. Of course, he can hear his brother's boots crunching through the brush — he knows the blond is staying the same relatively short distance behind — but the eyes are what Pulmar is monitoring, not his footfalls. Pulmar doesn't like that they stopped talking, but Trayan tires of conversation quickly, and the younger brother doesn't want to give the older's mood any reason to sour.
Pulmar pushes through two berry bushes of some kind and is rewarded with an immediate increase in volume. There, just past another dozen or so feet of trees, is the rippling surface of the Neverwinter River. It has been so many years since the youngest Aberron made this journey the first time — his great escape. He can still remember feeling such a sense of relief when he had finally reached the bank. The current feeling is similar, but different. Gone is the pounding heart that accompanies a sense of rebellion and anxiety for the unknown. Now, there is only determination and the reward of hard labor.
"There," the brunette says, turning to grin at his brother. He extends an arm toward the river. "I told you we'd find it before dark."
Trayan lifts his eyes just long enough to give what could be considered a glare at his brother. "You did," he replies succinctly.
Pulmar resumes his march, carefully navigating the maze of roots uncovered by occasional flooding. He lays a palm on the last tree between him and river as he walks by, unintentionally thanking whatever god of nature might have been looking over him and his brother as they trekked through the woods. Looking out over the rushing water of the river, he stops and puts his hands on his hips, smiling and blinking at the light of the setting sun.
Trayan steps up beside Pulmar, his hands balled into fists and pushing into the small of his back. "What now, navigator?"
Pulmar turns his grin on his brother. "Let's go ahead and camp here. We can turn in early and get an early start. If we're lucky," he says, repeating what he's said to Trayan a dozen times already, "a boat will be along that will pick us up. Otherwise, we'll walk."
"If we're lucky," Trayan repeats darkly, already dropping his pack.

I am not sure of the story/hooks/area other than it being near Icewind Dale, but I would be happy to brainstorm something/adapt one of my other character ideas to fit why they may take part in that adventure.
I would love to play Rime of the Frost Maiden. I'm still interested if you are.
I have a concept for a character for it. A half elf moon druid detective that has come to investigate the many different disappearances in the area. He uses his forms to find the truth in the cases he solves.
Roleplay example: The exhaustion started to set in. He has waited hours but to no avail. No one has shown up to the mansion. " Maybe I was wrong, he thought. He started to doubt himself and his investigative skills. " I will give it another hour or so and then I will call it quits." He said to himself. He waited that hour with no results. As he starts to pack up and get ready to leave he notices something * rolls perception check* he sees someone scale the mansion wall and slip into a window. " Gotcha!" He said in a whisper to himself. " I wont doubt myself again." He thought. The druid then used his wild shape to turn into a small bird and headed for the mansion.
I've often thought about trying something like this, I used to play a lot of one-on-one D&D as a kid, we called it "Day to day D&D," because it was a lot of role-playing life, and not so much actual adventuring. It was tons of fun. That said, it looks like you've got a lot of interest, so I'll not throw my hat in today. Best of luck and I hope you guys have a ton of fun. I may lurk just to see how it goes and see if I feel inspired to try something similar.

ey/em/eirs, or they/them works, too (just not he). Role-playing since that keep on those borderlands. I love it so.
Hey! I'm not sure if you filled all of the slots for the campaigns that you are interested in running, but if you still have the room or will do a second round of campaigns, then I would be interested...
I think it would be cool to play through the Tales of the Yawning Portal (starting with the Forge of Fury) and we can go through as many of the adventures as we can stay interested...
The character I would run would be some kind of Artificer... probably an Armorer (I really want to try out the TCoE content). As far as backstory goes; I am thinking something along the lines of an introverted gnome that used his inventions and armor as a barrier both physically and emotionally to protect himself from the world. As long as he has his armor to hide behind, he is the bravest creature out there, but strip him of his equipment and he falls apart.
"How brave of you to think you could have defeated me!" Lars shouts to his opponent "You're a fool". Smashing his fists together and releasing a powerful blast of thunder he begins to walk menacingly towards his victim. As he raises his gauntleted fists to the sky, preparing to crush the poor elf who dared to challenge him, the elf leaps to her feet and nimbly dodges out of the way. "Get back here!" Lars growls as he charges towards his fleeing target. Eventually, the elf reaches the rim of the fighting pit and begins to scrabble against the wall. Stepping up to her, Lars plucks her off the wall as one would an irritating pest. Wasting no time with theatrics now, Lars smashes his fist into the elf's head pulverizing her skull and sending her life's ichor spraying across Lars' armor and face. Dropping the body like a sack of potatoes, Lars raises both his arms in victory before promptly leaving the arena to the roaring applause of an entertained crowd.

Example post:
The coppery skinned, slender dragon born sits at the bar, sipping occasionally as he scans the room.
Update: I'm currently looking for one player to run through a solo Rime of the Frostmaiden campaign once it is released! If you are interested, please apply on this thread. If you've already applied and would like to apply for RotF, please post again to express interest.
The Solo DM. Currently running: Curse of Strahd, Out of the Abyss x2, Dragon Heist x2, and Kingmaker
I am not sure of the story/hooks/area other than it being near Icewind Dale, but I would be happy to brainstorm something/adapt one of my other character ideas to fit why they may take part in that adventure.
May I join?
The druid then used his wild shape to turn into a small bird and headed for the mansion.
will you be DMing?
I've often thought about trying something like this, I used to play a lot of one-on-one D&D as a kid, we called it "Day to day D&D," because it was a lot of role-playing life, and not so much actual adventuring. It was tons of fun. That said, it looks like you've got a lot of interest, so I'll not throw my hat in today. Best of luck and I hope you guys have a ton of fun. I may lurk just to see how it goes and see if I feel inspired to try something similar.
ey/em/eirs, or they/them works, too (just not he).
Role-playing since that keep on those borderlands. I love it so.
Hey, I suppose this recruitment (esp. the Frostmaiden)is no longer open, is it?
Withdrawn...
Hey! I'm not sure if you filled all of the slots for the campaigns that you are interested in running, but if you still have the room or will do a second round of campaigns, then I would be interested...I think it would be cool to play through the Tales of the Yawning Portal (starting with the Forge of Fury) and we can go through as many of the adventures as we can stay interested...The character I would run would be some kind of Artificer... probably an Armorer (I really want to try out the TCoE content). As far as backstory goes; I am thinking something along the lines of an introverted gnome that used his inventions and armor as a barrier both physically and emotionally to protect himself from the world. As long as he has his armor to hide behind, he is the bravest creature out there, but strip him of his equipment and he falls apart."How brave of you to think you could have defeated me!" Lars shouts to his opponent "You're a fool". Dropping the body like a sack of potatoes, Lars raises both his arms in victory before promptly leaving the arena to the roaring applause of an entertained crowd.Send me PM if I qualify... Thanks!“The mark of a successful DM is when you have caused more player deaths with doors than dragons, demons, or devils.”
