a kobold ranger at first may not seem to good. but if you choose a pet for your subclass, it all changes. for your pet you can choose a giant wasp. then since its medium and you small you can ride it. this results in, with the kobolds pack tactics, advantage on nearly all attacks, riding something with a flying speed of 50 and YOUR RIDING A GIANT WASP. since in most campaigns you have infinite arrows, plus rangers specialize in ranged attacks anyways, you could just fly up and boom. death from above.
If you're not willing or able to to discuss in good faith, then don't be surprised if I don't respond, there are better things in life for me to do than humour you. This signature is that response.
Well thats sad, but even if you didnt choose a giant wasp and got say a giant frog, you could still ride it, and get advantage on all attacks. so, not all hope is gone!

Pack tactics only works with an ally within 5’ of your target so you can’t rain death from above any better than a halfling or gnome ranger could.
Well i know, i was just including the fact that riding a giant wasp could have more advantages then advantage on attacks. though since know i know a giant wasp wont work, other choices could be: giant bat, giant crab, giant poisonous snake, giant wolf spider, giant spider, or even just say a mastiff. all of them get the advantage of being on a mount plus the advantage on attacks.
This reminds me of the de jur Pet choice I came up with a while back: the steeder. You basically get spider climb for free and can pepper folks with shots from your various weapons. further, as long as you have an ally fighting it for you then you still get pack tactics.
I love the kobold as a character race. The 'pack tactics' trait is amazing. Any time you get advantage to any roll, especially your attack roll, it's a huge advantage. If you're clever and ensure you maneuver yourself next to, or even behind, your party tank at every opportunity, this becomes almost a given in every battle your face. I also love the 'Giant Wasp' as a mount. I have a gnome wizard with a Staff of Swarming Insects that I use to create a short term (10min) mount to get me out of all sorts of difficulties and enable me to become a tough target.
If you like the idea of using your animal companion to fly about perhaps think of a Giant Owl or Bat.
I once had a idea for a kobald artificer for a 1shot his name was Dr Duffinsmertz he complained about semiaquaic mammals destroying his inators the dm at the convention said he'll no .
Ironically, one of the best times I ever had With a character Was with a kobold rogue that expressley *didn't* use pack tactics... at least not in the conventional sense.
I like to challenge myself by showing newer players what the game can be by playing interesting character types and/or ones that are considered "under powered", and so I had a plan for playing a kobold mastermind rogue named Lucky Ted M'seeks, a far traveller from a great kobold nation/colony in the deep underdark called Sovietski that was determined to help the people of the surfaces by teaching them about the wonders of socialism because they were all suffering under monarchies and plutarchies and such. Also Ted was a pacifist and thus wouldn't make any attacks against enemies for the entirety of the campaign.
The insanity of my actions (giving up an incredibly powerful combo of sneak attack + pack tactics) became clear as genius as time went on however, as my character began spamming the help action twice per turn and performing "cower beg and grovel" when things got especially dicey, ensuring that party members were persistently topped off With advantage. Hell, I even took inspiring leader so people could listen in awe to Ted's speeches on teamwork and collective bargaining for the masses.
All of it inspired by the wondrous entry in Volo's.
Needless to say I was, am and Will continue to be salt that kobolds got replaced by somethin that feels so god damn Wrong.
note: a common phb ranger pet is Pteranodon for a valid flying mount {for small races.} 60ft fly with flyby. There also is lore directly about small races riding them.
vulture is also valid but less likely to be considered appropriate anatomy. It also has keen sense and pack tactics but not great damage.
You know, its really sad that in the new guide to the multiverse book, they took away the pack tactics. I dont think i'll ever play with version of kobald that they suggest.

Your pet has to be CR1/4 or lower. Giant Wasps are CR1/2 and so don't qualify to be a Ranger's pet. Sorry 😔

Spelljammer Space Swine. Medium size, it flies, and can use barding.
