So 1st question is do I have to take a Half Elf 4th lvl of Rogue to get my lvl 4 feat since both Rogue and Ranger get them at lvl 4. When I take the feat I'll be taking Alert which will give me plus 9 total on my innitative. This should help me get Advantage per Assasinate Rogue/Assasin 3rd lvl skill and surprise which makes any hit a crit and a backstab. So with my short sword's(two weapon style) Could end up being 3D 6 times 2, plus 4 for my dex and the second attack wouldnt be a sneak attack but Assasinate would still be in play so a hit is a crit. My companion is a Hex Blade and in rounds 2,3, 4 etc of combat will often be in melee with the opponent giving me advantage to sneak attack once each round.
For flavor of this character I'm going to go Ranger/Hunter. Wander the wilds snaking into Orc, giants and other humaniod camps to assasinate tribal leaders...take the head of the snake so to speak. I see favored enemy and terain being useful and hunting them, tracking. Spells like HM for both damage and tracking an unsuspecting enemy to its camp/lair, Pass with out trace for sneaking in and also out, long stride for Hasty retreats, Silance.
One idea is taking poison feat at 8 to add 2D 8 to the assasinate and backstab round, with hunters mark. But i havent played in a decaded. Ideas on how to keep the lonewolf assasin in the wilderness concept while also making sure I can survive would be helpful. Feat ideas, spells etc...
Feats come with levels in a class so yes you need to go rogue 4 to get the feat. Unless you are doing solo adventures for some reason I wonder at the idea of a “lone wolf” focused character - how does the lone wolf fit into a group and a group based story?
If you want to play heavily into the Assassin / surprise / fist to go element, then the "go to" route would be to take the Gloomstalker sub class in ranger. Not only would this give you an even higher initiative, it would increase your Nova first round, plus give you a limited "invisibility" when dealing with creatures that rely on Darkvision to see you.
Thanks for the advice. My group is myself and my grown daughter. The DM is an old friend so it’s a very small party of two and he does run me through some solo campaigns. Really just a great way to zoom, see my kid and our old friend while having fun so being a strong solo or small group player seems fitting.
Thanks for the info on the feats. I wasn’t 100% sure if I had to take the 4th rogue level to get it.

Love the Gloomstaker but my DM is only allowing PHB for classes and races.
