Just playing around with builds and was curious about this. Currently a level 3 ranger, went with Horizon Walker. Planning to take ranger to level 5 for second attack. The next level ups I was thinking of taking barbarian to level 2. Increase my ac some and not worry about armor. Gain shield proficiency so I could swap to sword and board in a pinch. Mostly interested if it's possible (fingers crossed the wording for this exists) to rage and make reckless attacks with a bow.? I am aware that reckless states melee weapon attacks, but maybe there's other info out there on this topic that I just haven't found yet.
Ranger already gain shield proficiency you don't need barb for that. don or doffing shield cost an action so you lose a round for switching. As for rage and reckless RAW totaly not both require melee and STR total opposite of your bow range attack that use DEX.
Dex barb isnt particularly awesome, if you went totem barb to 6 you could get eagle vision and see up to a mile away as if you were only 100' distant but you have duplicated the extra attack at ranger 5.
look intro rogue dual class - (you definitely have the dex, and the sneak attacks nice / fighter (one or two levels for second wind, fightingstyle number 2 and action surge, / wisdom and cleric or druid it up gaining full spellcasting levels to boost your spells per day perhaps?
Barbarian should be examined carefully as a dip class - it may not offer you as much as another would so do it if you like the feel (of course) but keep a clear picture of what you want in your head
So, I'm a big fan of RP with all of my characters.
I'm a halfling who group up on the streets. I'm not the brawniest of chaps so I avoided going toe to toe with foes hence picking up a bow to keep my distance. I'm a bit cocky and like to run my mouth, but when shit goes south I lose my cool and try to get out of harm's way at all cost. I was trying to think of how barbarian came into play from an RP standpoint and I came up with this... So, when shit hits the fan and I try to get away, what happens when my friends can't? Perhaps I have a rush of conflicting emotions, a panic attack of sorts, so instead of running, my eyes go blurry and I just manically loose arrows at my foes.
Obviously if the rules/mechanics don't support that, that's one thing and I'll just have to take a different approach. 😆👍
You can have that RP without taking the mechanical multiclass though-- People in general can go into a blind fury without being in a rage, it just means there's no mechanical buffs/debuffs that come with your RP choice. It's still a cool character trait. :)
Personaly i feel barbarian more like the opposite like when shit goes to hell they run away just try to smash harder.
rogue or monk might something you looking for they both at level 2 have option to disengage/dash with a Bonus action simulating the f* i am out flee respond. I would say the monk more beefy with evasive manouvers character with option to dodge with his BA. while the rogue more like a sly and a dog that bark loud but it the first to hide with his BA and dissepear when it get unconfertable.
note: the monk might bit harder to implement since it has some feat that only work if you don't wear armor or only use monk weapons.
I'm playing a 5 rangerj (gloomstalker) /1barbarian Goliath in Rime and it is absolutely strong AF. STR/CON build and i throw daggers + sharpshooter. It peaks super early, but is one of the strongest builds i've ever played. (30 year dnd vet). Shield allows me to tank if damage soak is needed, and rage when damage is going to be rough. Otherwise just dump massive amounts of damage per turn. Mechanically it is super strong. And roleplay wise, it is amazing Goliath Werebear (earned) protector of the north.

I hate to be "that guy" but daggers + Sharpshooter actually does not work together. What you are actually after is darts + Sharpshooter. Also in my opinion Fighter is better than Barbarian for that particular playstyle. Nitpick over, sorry for the inconvenience.
A pole arm, two weapon, or heavy weapon wielding, strength based, melee ranger (hunter, beast master, swarm keeper, fey wanderer, and horizon walker are all great for this) works well as the bonus action can be used for other types of attacks instead of concentration spells like hunter's mark. Save those slots for healing and other utility. You can still use dexterity as you need it for both AC and multiclassing, also some wisdom for multiclassing, but after that just pump strength both for combat attacks, damage, and multiclassing. Pick up some hand axes for throwing and procing things like hail of thorns when you want to do AoE damage too (not while raging of course).

Also remember that Barbarians cannot cast spells or concentrate on spells while raging, and most Ranger spells are concentration.
