so monks are an marital class where wisdom and dexterity is important and you get to make lots of attacks
and rangers are an martial class where wisdom and dexterity is important and you get to make lots of attacks
so with this in mind i was considering making an ranger/monk multiclass hybrid. And so i started out by going wood elf and first level monk, using the classvariants UA to redefine what my monk weapons are so that i may use an long sword as an monk weapon. At this point his story and aestetic is something along the lines of "this wood elf has trained for years in elven swordplay, his incredible awareness to the world around him helping him block and doge incoming attacks as he uses this seemingly clunky and big longsword with skill and finesse, his body too is an dangerous weapon"
from here i went with one level of ranger, replacing favored enemy with favored foe so that he gains three uses of hunters mark per long rest, letting him dish out 1d10 + 1d4 + 2d6 + 6 damage in a single turn, and roving to increase. His story has evolved, now he has taken on the responsibilities of protecting the primeval woods and as a result he gains increased speed and precision.
from here, let us say this theoretical wood elf gains another level in monk, granting him another slight speed buff, and the abillity to use ki. His story has evolved further, his mastery of elven primeval magic letting him channel an inner spirit and move and doge with incredible speed, now able to twice per short rest deal an extra 1d4 + 1d6 + 3 damage to his attack rutine
and here i get into a spot of bother, from here i plan on him just proceeding in ranger as normal, but when it comes to what fighting style he shall pick well what options do i really have? defense only works if i am wearing armor and thus not benefiting from unarmored defense, dueling and two weapon fighting do not work when weilding an weapon with both hands, and shure wielding an longsword with one hand will let you benefit from dueling and that is technically an buff in damage output, but that just does not fit the aestetic we are going for here no? The new UA has new fighting styles meant to be given to all classes, so our ranger might pick up unarmed fighting or interception and become an sworn protector of his forest, or pick blind fighting to combat any threat and to further display his combat awareness and his awareness of his surroundings, or i might even go for druidic warrior, this is at the level where our little swordsman learns the secrets of nature magic and one might be able to argue that the druidic warrior fighting style fits right in with that, but i am not shure and here i wish for some assistance.
anyways after this i mean to give him further levels in ranger, at least up to level five so that he may gain extra attack. as for his archetype i'd say with his focus on physical excellence the only archetype worth an elf of his caliber ought to be the hunter archetype, no? In this i'd say colossus slayer or horde breaker fits him best, ether an terrifying amount of attacks with horde breaker or making precise, devastating strikes for that extra d8 damage. At this point this elven ranger is pretty skilled in the ways of druidic magic yet also an terrifying and effective killer with his sword, while also being able to punch you pretty hard. Damage output should be like 2d10 + 1d4 + 3d6 + 12 at this point using hunters mark, ignoring flurry of blows and whatever fighting style feature you might have gotten
At this point it is time for this character to take his third, and final level in monk, going for the kensei, gaining the ability to be yet more skilled at blocking blows with your sword with that +2 bonus to armor class while also letting you slice incomming arrows in two with your longsword. Yes ASI and slow fall from monk might be worth it, you might even argue that stunning strike is worth it, yet i think of this build as primarily an ranger build with an handful of monk levels, not as an full on monk build. You might even argue that this last monk level is particularly weak and that it can be ignored, and to that i would fully agree
from there you just proceed into more and more levels of ranger, gaining further features that might increase your mobillity or your defense or might even net you the fantastic whirlwind attack feature at 11th damage letting you really be an force of destruction on the battlefield
so whatcha think? is this build any good? what fighting style should i pick? what spells would fit this character best, what fighting style, what hunter features, should i dip more into monk?

Good, nice ideas for when leveling up. Maybe ask DM if you can have great weapon fighting
