First time playing a ranger. Probably going for gloom stalker and then multiclassing after 5th level. What do people find to be the most interesting build - a gloom stalker who goes for the rogue scout, the rogue assassin, or a sorcerer with shadow magic?
(My character is a reclusive werewolf lycanthrope who wants to rid himself of his curse for various reasons, so all of it sort of might work in the story that is unfolding).
Trying to understand how this lycanthropic curse befell him and how it is affecting him, our hero retreats to a monastery (after 3rd Ranger Gloomstalker) and learns the Way of the Shadow (at least 6th level Monk Way of the Shadow to gain the teleporting feature.)
You forgot about Ranger/Monk? This multiclass could be lots of fun!

"A rightful place awaits you in the Realms Above, in the Land of the Great Light. Come in peace, and live beneath the sun again, where trees and flowers grow."
— The message of Eilistraee to all decent drow.
"Run thy sword across my chains, Silver Lady, that I may join your dance.”
Inherited lycanthropy from his father. Supressed but aware of it. Not too sure about monk for this character, but it might be an interesting build otherwise.
Sounds pretty cool, I'm working on a gloom stalker and soul knife rouge, psionics and unlimted ranged ammo and will never miss, and enough spell pwr to always hit w/advantage if you need the sneak atk ea round and will end up with 3 regular attacks and if using psionic bonus action can be used for an off hand atk mix that w hunters mark and you end up w 10 or more damage 🎲 by the time you hit lvl 5
It depends on one thing: how often do you get to start encounters by surprisung enemies? If that happens quite often Assassin is the deal of thesay. If not, any other rogue subclass is likely better. And I would say rogue beats pretty much anything else as a gloomstalker multiclass.
personally I have gone from lv 1-15 over 3 years with one (with a few fighter levels in between too) and it was great. A true jack of all things+super specialist at surprising.
Mechanically Rogue Scout is the best option and, in my opinion, also what best fits with a ranger build. Sorcerer makes you really MAD, Assassin is a bit weak (well, as weak as rogues can ever get :P ) and circumstantial but Scout gives you two more skills (if you haven't got them already) and expertise on top of that. It gives you more utility than both of the other choices.

What book is the soul knife subclass in?
Tasha's Cauldron of Everything
Are you married to those choices? Rather than shadow sorc I would say twilight cleric.
I don't see a cleric really fitting for this character as the story stands at the moment. But good shout!
I would have to recommend rogue scout. That combo makes the best ranger IMHO.

Assassin is the most powerful damage wise. Scout is more flavorful and adds a lot in terms of skill versatility and utility.

I'll be "that guy" that strays from topic and say Cleric. >;p
