Chaos war ravaged the Neverwinter Woods when I was growing up and war is all I ever knew as a child. I was born on a boat, My parent's and close family were trying to escape the last eruption of Mount Hotenow, but it rained lava on us and I was the one survivor found alive. no siblings adopted by (Humans) village community poor as a child brought up in a shack no other friends Village was in the depths Netherwinter wood. Moved to Netherwinter at aged 8, when I met Hel and Rel. Initially I lived on the streets, but then was taken in and trained by the Lords Alliance after another Half-Elf knight took pity on me. I served in the Lords Alliance, learning the precepts of my profession while blazing trails and scouting enemy encampments. I served the Lords Alliance for 35 (10yo - 45yo) years, starting as a private and working my way through the ranks. I was, initially, happy to join them as they were the only group to offer any support to my village when it was attacked by fiends (hence my hatred of fiends). I left with honour after the final Battle to clear Neverwinter of the Orcs, where I was badly injured and brutally scarred in an ambush / Trap which was lead by a senior Lords Alliance knight, The trap was part of a wider (good) plan, but I was not informed of it until after the event. hence why I no longer have any fealty to them, as feel they let me down.
although you guide suggest assassin first, I think, as my character is from a military background he should do fighter first, for 3 levels and then go into the rogue route (as his rouge friend influences him).
This would keep him reasonably buffed, as he is more often a melee fighter than a ranged one, he can then go down the assassin route (if he makes it that long).
May check out scout as a rogue. Those expertise bonus are very nice. And can always be used. And if only going for 3 levels in fighter, samurai has has the advantage befits that are useful. While champion gives your extra crits19/20. May also consider elven accuracy as a feat if using dex based attacks
your party is a bit weak on support. Adding a bit of cleric or druid might be helpful to the party depending on your playstyle.

I think that fighter would be cool, but Gloom Stalkers are already one of the best rangers, so you don't strictly need to multiclass. However, if you do, a support character may be in order.
Honestly the different damage types don't matter much against resistances and immunities, they are almost always blanketing the whole non-magical weapons category

I'm playing a half - elf level 5 gloom stalker ranger.
Strength 19 (thanks to gauntlets of ogre power) 12 without these.
Dex 18
Con 16
Int 14
Wis 15
Cha 13
I play with a rouge/swashbuckler and sorcerer/shadow magic both level 5.
I mix between range and duel blade attacks, and am often the first player engaged.
Thinking that ranger goes a bit weak at level 6, so considering a move over to fighter next, probably battle master.
Thoughts or advice please.

next question on this one...
Currently I dual wield rapiers, but am considering changing to a great sword, as am often using bonus action to move hunters mark anyway, if in melee.

ahh, maybe not, I would lose my AC gained from using a finesse weapon with Defensive Duelist.
mmm, I guess I could use one long sword and one rapier? That way I can utilize two different damage types without losing the extra ac benefit.
