I am doing some light planning for a character that is very much a ninja assassin kind of feel to him. My current ideas are as follows.
Drow Elf for the Dex boost and access to a couple handy dandy spells (not to mention being right on par for a sneaky assassin). Have Dex and Wisdom my two highest stats in that order in preparation of taking Rogue and levels of Monk as I go.
I will definitely start as Rogue, as that will be where most of the levels will be going. But I am uncertain if I want to immediately start into Monk at level 2, or wait till I reach 3 or 4 with the rogue. The rogue will be taking Assassin as the archetype, and for the first 4th level I reach (whether it is from rogue or from monk) I will take Drow High Magic. I think of the character really embracing their heritage, and the usefulness of their innate spellcasting.
Whenever I start taking monk levels I think I may keep going until I reach level 6 and go way of Shadow, to get the ASI, all the spell like abilities to supplement my existing drow spellcasting ability. I don't really plan to rely too heavily on the monk traits, but instead use most ki points for the spell effects. To begin I will do a minimum 3 levels to get the Shadow abilities, but it is tough to stop there. 4th gives the ASI and 5th gains the extra attack and stunning fist. 6th lets me step through shadows and makes my fists 'magical' which is handy. I think minimum lvl 3 for Shadow Monk, with a heavy leaning towards going to 5, and maaaybe 6 (probably save that till later though).
When I gain my second ASI I think I will just be putting the points into dexterity, Wherever I do stop on monk I will likely level rogue through to 7 or 8 before going back to monk again. The plan (i realize reaching level 20 is unlikely but this is more a fun thought for me) is to be 14 Rogue Assassin/6 Monk Shadow.
At some level I would probably take Elven Accuracy as well, but not till the 3rd ASI or later.
I am curious what suggestions people have for level progression paths. The general idea is to be a Assassin with a handful of stealthy spells to fill out my toolkit, lockpicking, poisoner's kit, alchemy to make my own poisons. I will likely just be wielding a shortsword in one hand most times and leaving that free hand open for unarmed strikes when useful. The Ki points will be used for utility rather than attacks more often than not. Let me know what you think works best.

Probably best Ninja monk build
14 Rogue Assassin 6 Monk Way of the Shadow
(I like playing a Tabaxi Monkish Rogue)
