Hey, i am planing on playing an arcane trickster. My plan is picking up crossbow master + hand crossbow and short sword + owl as famillar. Now I want to keep the distance from mobs. With owl I activate the sneak attack. To finish the monster I want to go melee and do attack (+sneak attack) and hand crossbow attack (bonus). Now I think this setup will work but will lose a lot of bonus actions. So I thought of multi classing to get more out of bonus actions. First idea was 3lvl fighter for echo knight. So I can do an attack via echo and use bonus action from crossbow. But since I normally prepare my action and wait with the attack till my owl is flanks my target. If I do so I loose the bonus action (can't prepare a bonus action). So fighter is nice and I really like echo but seems this won't work 4 bonus actions... So I want do u guys think ? Which class is best to multi class for this build/playstyle ?
It depends how much of a Fighter dip you want to do. For 3-5 lvls I recommend Battle Master. Maneuvers help offset your missing sneak attack damage a little bit for those times when you can't get advantage. Disarming and Goading Attacks are very good at weakening a powerful foe. Lvl 5 gets you Extra Attack.
If you are prepared to play a more melee oriented type of character, then going 7-9 lvls of Eldritch Knight is pretty good. EK lets you grab the Shield and Absorb Elements spells straight away to help increase your survivability. At lvl 7 you get War Magic which lets you take a attack with your bonus action if you cast a cantrip with your action. Cantrips like Booming Blade and Green Flame Blade trigger sneak attacks as long as you use a finese weapon. Also going the melee build lets you take advantage of Shadow Blade which the Eldritch Knight can learn at lvl 8.
