So I was wondering, if I cast minor illusion to make a goblin think that an enemy is next to it, would I get sneak attack?
If I cast disguise self to make myself look like a friend to an enemy. Would I get advantage on attack rolls against them? (until they realized I'm an enemy)
What creative ways to get advantage have you Found?
I love drow, rogues and Chinese weapons. I mean come on, rope darts are awesome.
My current character is a drow shadow monk, with a "unique" honor code (give him some time, he's working through some stuff). He also sucks on the socialization side of interacting with all other living creatures. which is very fun to RP.
You can hide or otherwise obscure yourself from your enemy and then attack. Minor illusion might work if you were “in” the illusion. The new steady aim feature from tashas cauldron of everything gives a potential way for a lone rogue to gain sneak attack. Never made any sense that a rogue couldnt sneak attack by themselves.
Illusions don't grant advantage on sneak attack -- illusions aren't creatures, they don't count as an enemy of the target. See the Echo Knight FAQ, as Echo Knights are also defined as illusions.
I don't see how disguising yourself would give you advantage - you could ask your DM, but I would expect that if such a thing were allowed it would be called out as a benefit for the Assassin subclass.
Rogues can easily sneak attack by themselves: Versatile Trickster, Insightful Fighting, and Rakish Audacity. Plus of course the basic 'Bonus Action: Hide, Action: Attack' play, available to every rogue.
An illusion can be used to generate sneak attack if used in such a way to create heavy obscurity and attack from.
example: rogue casts minor illusion to create a box or barrel large enough to hide in. Rogue moves into the box, and can see through it since they’ve physically interacted with the illusion. Other creatures can’t see through it yet. This generates advantage for one attack since the target creature is can’t see the rogue. The image then fades due to the physical interaction of the attack being made through the illusion.
the 3 ways you listed for easy sneak attack are subclass features that the base class doesn’t have access to. Some DMs have become notorious for thinking Sneak attack is overpowered and pretty much negating it as much as they could. Some of which go so far as to nerf the hide action enough that the entire party can’t use it, let alone the rogue.
steady aim gives the rogue a way to stay reliable damage dealer by trading their high mobility. The thief, assassin, mastermind, scout, and phantom are sitting ducks if they’re in an environment they can’t hide in, which is very possible with some of the roles a stealthy rogue may fill.
No, minor illusion creates illusory objects, not illusory creatures - you can manifest very realistic statues, but they won't be animated at all, for example.
You can use minor illusion to gain advantage and thus qualify for sneak attack.
Disguise self may give you a chance to surprise your target, but that would be very dependent on your DM.
I like to use silent image to obscure my rogue in a small fog cloud (I can see through it, as I am not subject to the illusion, for any outsider I am 'unseen').
What if you were to use a Minor illusion to create the the sound of a barbarian rage to distract the enemy would that work?

There's two big problems with minor illusion. 1 it's a stationary thing. So it can't really threaten anything. And 2. It's an Action to use. So any benefit you got out of using it would be gone by the time you were able to use another action trying to take advantage of it.
Even if you found ways to use it that the DM allowed like the illusion of the Barrel. It would only work once because you'd disrupt it by interacting with the illusion in ways that would break the believability of the effect. One of minor illusions biggest weaknesses is the fact that it is also the most fragile of all illusions. any interaction with all breaks it, examining has a chance of breaking it. And it can only affect one of two senses. The Applications for it really are limited for the most part. There are clever ways to use it. But not really in regards to combat or sneak attack. It just doesn't hold up for those.
