Hi, new player here, and I was wondering something about Clay Golems and their Immutable Form ability when it came to Polymorph effects, specifically when turning someone or something into a Clay Golem, and then trying to get them to change back.
RAW Immutable Form. The golem is immune to any spell or effect that would alter its form.
Does this mean that a person Polymorphed INTO a clay golem is immune to the natural mechanics of Polymorph that would change them back? How much would I have to worry about my DM ruling that this ability means my friend, who just died as a Clay Golem, means that they just died for good, or that they can't turn back even AFTER the one hour duration on Polymorph is up because they're immune to all effects that alter their form? If I can't rely on those, would it be safe to assume that I can't rely on Dispel Magic, either?
Well Polymorph is limited to turning the target into a Beast. So you wouldn't be able to use it to turn something into a Clay Golem. However the spell True Polymorph can turn a target into a Construct like a Clay Golem.
As for the rest of your questions I would still allow the True Polymorph spell to behave as normal even if the target were transformed into a Clay Golem. To me any argument to the affect that the True Polymorph's normal termination conditions no longer apply would necessitate that all of the effects of True Polymorph end and the original target would immediately return to their normal form. The spell either works, or it doesn't.
As for how your DM would rule, I have no idea. If this is something you would like to try then talk with your DM and suggest your idea and see what they think. If this is something your DM has done to one of the party then I would suggest giving Dispel Magic a try before reducing your party member to zero to see if they pop back to normal or not.
Thanks for the reply! I watched a video and assumed Polymorph worked the same as True Polymorph, so thank you for clarifying that as well! I should bring it up to my DM, but perhaps only if this issue is ever likely to come up. I think I'm the only person in the party who can take True Polymorph (Multiclass Wizard/Warlock, and so far I only know about a druid and a fighter, but there will be one or two more), and due to my multiclassing choices, this only becomes an issue if we ever actually reach level 20.
