Specifically, their divine strike? unless i'm reading the stuff wrong....
tempest used to be able to either use thunder, or choose between thunder/lightning as their divine strike.. but now its necrotic or radiant... so am i just blind and misreading or did they take some of tempest clerics theme away?
They didn’t. The divine strike of the base 2024 cleric does necrotic or radiant. Tempest version at level 8 is unchanged and can do thunder. Not sure what you are seeing if it was under the Legacy Tempest divine strike.

I think raiketsu is correct. It says in the new phb that this feature replaces divine strike in older subclasses.
"LEVEL 7: BLESSED STRIKES Divine power infuses you in battle. You gain one of the following options of your choice (if you get either option from a Cleric subclass in an older book, use only the option you choose for this feature).
Divine Strike. Once on each of your turns when you hit a creature with an attack roll using a weapon, you can cause the target to take an extra ld8 Necrotic or Radiant damage (your choice)."
Since Divine Strike is the same named feature at level 8 for tempest cleric i can only interpret that it now does radiant or necrotic instead of thunder damage. I also recall jeremy crawford saying the same thing in one of his interviews.
Although i think any reasonable dm would still allow thunder damage as it fits much better with the theme of tempest cleric.
Thank you for linking that. I should have when i made the post, but that was one of those "I have 5 minutes before work, but i also don't want to forget to ask" situations.
And that is what triggered my curiosity. Also aye, a table can ignore a rule, it just makes no sense to me why they'd change it to begin with unless they were going to allow you to choose EITHER thunder OR lightning.
Just did a quick check in the character builder- if you use 2014 class it shows up as normal from the 2014 PHB. This is specifically when you are crossing the '24 main class with the '14 subclass, and honestly the occasional bit of static like this is to be expected. They standardized the damage types for '24 and any future subclasses will account for that in their feature design, and I believe this is the one case where a previous subclass is impacted by the change. They definitely don't intend for people to stack the two features for 2d8 extra damage per attack at level 8, so the new class feature overrides the old subclass feature, and considering it's purely a matter of saying "oh, that's actually thunder damage" for the one case where the type matters as a consistent component, I can see why they didn't make it a toggle.

Thanks for pointing that out. I missed that part. And I agree a DM should allow thunder since it was part of the subclass.
