I'm looking for advice on a tiered "sacrifice" mechanic for a magic weapon. I'm sure something along these lines already exists but I'm trying give the player an opportunity to gamble their own health with the opportunity of dealing extra damage. Ideally, I could turn it into a Legacy based weapon themed around a relic from the Lady of Pain. I just created the numbers below on the fly as a frame of reference but any advice/suggestions around this mechanic would be appreciated.
Tier 1: 1d8 sacrifice player health / 1d8 extra damage
Tier 2: 1d6 sacrifice player health / 1d10 extra damage
Tier 3 : 1d4 sacrifice player health / 2d6 extra damage
The "risk" would be optional and the weapon would have an inherent magic damage bonus to make it desirable for routine use.
It is actually pretty rare for a feature in D&D 5e to have a harm paired with a benefit. In the WotC content the only thing that comes to mind is Frenzy from the Path of the Berserker Barbarian subclass.
Critical Role however made the Blood Hunter class with 4 different subclasses and inflicting self harm for some benefit of pretty much their while thing. I believe the Blood Hunter is available for free here on DnDBeyond so you can look through that for ideas.
Just so you know, this should probably be in "Homebrew & House Rules" rather than "Rules & Game Mechanics."

Look at what you've done. You spoiled it. You have nobody to blame but yourself. Go sit and think about your actions.
Don't be mean. Rudeness is a vicious cycle, and it has to stop somewhere. Exceptions for things that are funny. Go to the current Competition of the Finest 'Brews! It's a cool place where cool people make cool things.
