I have to say the way damage when making death saves is written the PHB could be MUCH better, given that the unconscious condition / critical hit detail is elsewhere.

How MUCH better can it be? The result from a critical hit doesn't deal damage as normal, but rather does other effect as explained when Dropping to 0 Hit Points instead.
As for any conditions including unconscious,, they're referenced everywhere in the book but are detailed only once in the Condition appendix for easy reference.
As a player looking for death saving throw rules in the PHB, something like that really shouldn’t need a hundred page jump to the appendix. Digitally it likely reads simpler because the link to said appendix is there within the condition, but for new players or DMs thumbing through their PHB, I - personally - believe that a quick reminder or reference in that section would make it easier on the fly, and it’s my - personal - opinion that if the PHB were republished today, it would like reflect something like that.
I’m sorry that you found my opinion so triggering.

That’s literally how any manual is written; specific terms used widely throughout the material will be defined in a glossary, and the reader pages back and forth to reference them as needed.

Am I understanding this correctly:
”If the damage is from a a critical hit, you suffer two failures instead.” (PHB, p. 197)
”When you drop to 0 hit points, you either die outright or fall unconscious…” (PHB, p. 197)
Unconscious: “Any attack that hits the creature is a critical hit if the attacker is within 5 feet of the creature.” (PHB, p. 292)
So what I’m gathering here is any successful melee attack made to a fallen (unconscious) PC w/ 0 HP
Automatically counts as 2 Death Saving Throw failures
But a successful ranged attack (beyond 5 ft.) or even a melee attack made from 10 ft. Reach
Counts as 1 fail to the Death Saving Throw? 🤔
You are correct on all points

Oh wow… Brutal 😅
Thanks 🙏🏾
