Hello, I hope someone can help with my question. I'm in my first campaign and a veteran player has a rune knight, fighter, noble build. Today he used the cloud rune to divert an attack onto a friendly player (me). My question is, is this allowed and is there a way to resist this from happening.
Yes, you can use the cloud rune to divert an attack onto anyone (other than the attacker) within range, even the Rune Knight themselves
In addition, when you or a creature you can see within 30 feet of you is hit by an attack roll, you can use your reaction to invoke the rune and choose a different creature within 30 feet of you, other than the attacker. The chosen creature becomes the target of the attack, using the same roll. This magic can transfer the attack’s effects regardless of the attack’s range. Once you invoke this rune, you can’t do so again until you finish a short or long rest.
Reasons for diverting it onto an ally if there's no enemy within range might involve the new target having a higher AC to turn the attack into a miss, the new target having some sort of resistance (i.e. "let the barbarian take the hit"), to save the original target if they're near 0 HP or making death saves, to prevent a caster from having to make a concentration check on an important spell...
Was there a good strategic reason to divert the attack away from the original target?

Carric Aquissar, elven wannabe artist in his deconstructionist period (Archfey warlock) Lan Kidogo, mapach archaeologist and treasure hunter (Knowledge cleric) Mardan Ferres, elven private investigator obsessed with that one unsolved murder (Assassin rogue) Xhekhetiel, halfling survivor of a Betrayer Gods cult (Runechild sorcerer/fighter)
Rules As Written? It sure doesn't look there was a way to stop it other than being further away or having a higher AC. (ie: the ability relies on the new target being within 30 ft of the rune knight and that the same attack roll hits your AC; it does not specify willing/unwilling targets, ally/opponent, etc.)
It's one of my absolute favorite abilities, honestly (redirecting crits and/or killing blows is just so valuable).
But I'm guessing you had not agreed to this plan and it didn't exactly make for a fun experience at the table? The only remedy for that is communicating with the other players and letting the DM know that was uncool and it made the night less fun. I can only hope the rune knight player had strategic reasons or at least benign intentions. Sounds like a lousy move if it's otherwise, and I would be fairly ticked in that case.
Thank you for your replies. I play a rogue and my AC is 15 in comparison to there 18. There was no communication prior to committing to this plan and they could of removed themselves from the situation as they could of climbed a cliff.
but it is what it is and thank you for the knowledge.

If they are wasting their limited use abilities just to mess with you, bring that up to the DM.
