So the official rules don't have a lot to say regarding players becoming lycanthropes. Each kind of lycanthrope has a section describing what happens mechanically when a player becomes that kind of lycanthrope (see Werewolf). But other than it is up to the DM to decide what in their world might trigger the curse of lycanthropy and how society treats lycanthropes, and the player decides how the curse affects their behavior.
Other than that, there is the third party class Blood Hunter and its subclass Order of the Lycan you can check out.
Rules are in the Monster Manual. Per MM, moon forces a transformation, otherwise it depends if the character embraces the curse or fights it. If you embrace it it’s an alignment change and possible loss of control of a PC to the DM but the character can voluntarily shift. Otherwise, they only transform under the full moon per the entry, although a DM might run it differently.
Really, it’s rather underwhelming as a PC feature. Unless you surrender to the curse you really only get a boost to STR or DEX, but unless you go werebear it’s not likely to increase your ability mod if it was your primary stat. No new resistances or immunities unless you transform, which will be a fairly rare event if you resist the curse.
Really, if you’re after the vibe, you either want Path of the Beast as a Barbarian or Order of Lycanthropes Bloodhunter. Or possibly the Shifter race. RAW really doesn’t support the basic condition as a player option.

What are the rules and principles if a PC wanted to play a lycanthrope
Would the moon have a effect or does it change depending on what were -creature they are.
And how would it be added to the DND beyond app as a playable character feature for campaigns.
All opinions welcome
