monk decides to ready action to punch the next creature that enters the room, creature enters room on its turn and the monk punchs, hits, and decides to use stunning strike also. is this allowed in a readied action as he stated he was only going to punch? i allowed it but not sure as it says you only take the stated readied action? thanks for any help
Stunning strike allows a monk to choose to use the feature after a hit. So in the strictest sense, the player doesn’t even decide until they know whether or not they hit, meaning he couldn’t have decided when he readied his action..

"When you hit another creature with a melee weapon attack, you can spend 1 ki point to attempt a stunning strike." is the full trigger criteria for Stunning Strike, and there is no other action cost. So it doesn't matter when you make the attack, the only requirement is that it's a melee weapon attack and that you hit with the attack.

Sure. It is attached to the Attack action. Same like if a Paladin wanted to use Divine Smite or a Rogue wanted to use Sneak Attack.
