There are spells, abilities, poisons, potions, and traps that call for a save to avoid half or all of the effects. If a spellcaster takes damage while concentrating on a spell, they make a CON save to maintain concentration.
Yes, a Dexterity saving throw would come in handy when finding out if you got crushed by a falling boulder. I think a Constitution Save is what you roll to avoid being paralyzed by a Yeti’s Chilling Gaze. A Strength Saving Throw might be used if you are tied to a companion while climbing and they slip, leaving you to see if your grip on the rock face holds till they get a new grip. Charisma, Wisdom and Intelligence saves would come up against sudden effects or spells that might bring about madness.
Basically Saving throws are reactionary ability checks, whereas other skill checks are proactive.

ey guys noob question, if i understood correctly, saving throws are used in all spellcasts, but there's other ways to use them?
like i think you can use them if you're crushed by a boulder to avoid instant death or something like that?
and is there other situations in which you can use them? thanks in advance
