If the particular effect is something that is of a spell level above the level that you casted the spell, you must make a check using your spellcasting ability. So (assuming these classes can cast Dispel Magic) bard, paladin, sorcerer, warlock would make a Charisma check to attempt to dispel the effect. Cleric, druid, ranger would make a Wisdom check. Eldrich knight, arcane trickster, wizard would make an Intelligence check.

The spell description says:
"Make an ability check using your spellcasting ability."
What does this mean? Can someone give me an example of how this works?
