Scenario: Our group has just entered a cave that we want to explored. Shortly after entering the cave there was a passage to our right, where we found three wolves chained to the wall. My character wants to release them into the wild, so I'm wondering the following: (I'm a level 2 ranger)
Can I go up to one wolf, cast animal friendship on it, lead it out of the cave (perhaps with the help of some food), and into the wild, go back inside and then cast it on another wolf? (I don't need the first wolf to be charmed if it's far away from me) Or do I need to wait another 24 hours?
You might not even need the spell if the DM allow you to use food, free the wolves and with a Wisdom (Animal Handling) check. Most beats freed from a trap, cage or other restrain will usually run away.
Following what Plaguescarred says, it's usually a good idea to try Animal Handling first unless you think there's a risk failure will alert enemies; an offer of food will often make this easier where beasts are concerned.
This avoids the need to burn spell slots on animal friendship, though it's still a great spell to have handy if animal handling fails, or you need to calm a beast immediately. Since it doesn't require concentration, and lasts for 24 hours (unless you harm it) you can have multiple beasts be charmed by you at once – the restriction on multiple spell effects applies to the targets, so you can have any number of copies of a spell going at the same time so long as they don't require concentration, or aren't targeting the same creature.

Yes you can do that twice since Animal Friendship is not a concentration spell.

Don't click that if you don't want to spoil it for you but Animal Friendship and food are almost always helpful where animals are concerned.

Whatever method you use to appease the wolves and free them, have you considered trying to befriend them? Now that could be cool!
