I am fairly new to D&D and I have recently discovered the Revived Rogue and was wondering, because they don't need to breathe, whether they would be immune to certain spell damages and certain natural air toxins that would need to be inhaled to have an affect.
This question isn't specifically about the Revived, I'm just using the Revived as an example. This question goes for anyone that does not need to breathe, whether it's because of an enchanted item, spell, or natural ability. This may just be one of those things that's up to the DMs discretion but i'm curious to see if there is a written rule that I just don't know about.
The way I've seen it described is that things like poison gases and such are caustic enough that you don't need to actually inhale the gases to suffer the consequences of them. Otherwise just about any character is capable of holding their breath for the few seconds it takes to move through a gas cloud.
This is one of those hypotheticals where playing a Warforged character really should make a big difference. They should get outright immunity to poison damage (rather than just resistance and advantage to saves) since they aren't living creatures at all.
Unless it specifically says it needs to be inhaled, gases do damage to anyone in contact with them. Unless a DM overrules it.
Mmm... yes, but not entirely accurate. Holding your breath (or not needing to breathe) only refers to suffocation, and it's definitely the developer's fault for not being explicitly clear about this kind of interaction. Even specific poisons such as Burnt Othur Fumes (Inhaled) explicitly state that they affect a creature regardless of their state of breathing.
Unless you have a specific immunity to something, it can & will affect you.
