On a swarm of rats does an acid splash cantrip do 1d6 of damage only or it can one shot a swarm as it's an area of effect spell and it does 1d6 of damage to each member of the swarm, i guess the answer is only 1d6 but i prefer to ask.
Same question for area of effect spell like poison spray or so (cantrip or not for that matter in fact)
A swarm is, mechanically, a single creature. It doesn't 100% make sense in every situation, but it's deliberately simplified to save the DM the trouble of tracking 100 1hp creatures. I guess if you had to think of it in a kind of logical sense, you could say the swarm is dense enough that only the creatures on the outer edge are hit by the spell.
All of the rules for running a swarm are in the statblocks for those swarms. Swarms don't have individual members in 5e, they're treated as a single stat block with some unique features, such as resistance to many damage types and attacks that change based on HP remaining. See swarm of rats as an example.
