Hello, I am planning for a future adventure that may take place in the depths of the Sea of Fallen Stars in Faerun. First -- I am assuming that the sea is saltwater for the purposes of this thread.
My main question: If a surface/airbreather is trapped in a air pocket deep in a sea for up to a week, how would they be able to survive if seawater was their only source of hydration?
I know that spells such as Water Breathing and Alter Self can mitigate that problem temporarily, but are there any other published spells, items, etc. that would help someone survive on saltwater along (and maybe a day or two of ration spread out for an entire week?
The first place I check was Purify Food and Drink:
All nonmagical food and drink within a 5-foot-radius sphere centered on a point of your choice within range is purified and rendered free of poison and disease.
As I understand that description, saltwater vs freshwater wouldn't be a consideration since both are naturally occurring substances with no inherent poison or disease.
Decanter of endless water, and spearfishing. Though the other pressing issue might be running out of breathable air, depending on the size of the bubble.
Create Bonfire (druid/sorcerer/warlock/wizard/artificer cantrip) is capable of boiling water, which you could use to purify salt water by trapping steam.
Purify Food and Drink (druid/cleric/paladin/artificer 1, ritual), as you mention, arguably only clear's "poison" and not other harmful substances, but it wouldn't be improper for you to treat it as creating potable water.
Also, note that all that going without water does is impose Exhaustion (though at a fairly rapid clip once you're two days in). But that's nothing that Greater Restoration isn't able to take care of in a pinch (though that's a fairly high level spell, so there's no reason a caster wouldn't avail themself of one of the less spell-slot-intensive options above first).

Honestly 5E doesn't really handle survival campaigns well, because there's no shortage of low level spells that trivialize such challenges.

Wow. Thanks for the fast replies. I haven't DMed much 5e and many of those spells and/or options weren't on my radar.
