I was DMing a one-shot with premade Lvl 5 characters, one of which was a gnome artificer artillerist. The characters were supposed to be powerful because I didn't want my players to have a lot of long rests in order to beat the dungeon. I rolled the ability scores and made it so that the INT score of the artificer was 18, modifier +4.
So this is what happened: beginning from the first encounter, the player piloting the artificer summoned the eldritch canon in protector mode and began to use its feature on pretty much the whole party (it has a 10ft. range), providing them with 1d8+4 temp. hitpoints every round. It did cost him only an action to create the canon and then a bonus action in later rounds. In comparison to the heroism spell does this seem extremely strong.
But that's only where it began. In the aftermath of the battle, we had a discussion whether it would be possible to just keep the canon to 'fire' stacking basically infinite temp. hitpoints. Luckily they accepted that this would break the game and agreed to only use this feature in battle. However, I feel that there's a serious lack of ruling concerning this particular ability.
Now my questions: Did any of you experience anything similar? Did I overread a rule, maybe saving this issue? If not, what do you suggest for a fix? Maybe a turn limit? Or removing the INT score modifier?
Thanks for reading and for your comments! Regards David ArchmageVaidd

Spending a whole round of actions to generate 1d8+4 temporary hitpoints is strong, but not too problematic. Is it possible, that your group overlooked, that temp HP do not stack?

This statement makes me think you are unaware that temp HP does NOT stack. If you have 10 temp HP, and gain 5, you end up with 10. If you have 5 temp HP and gain 10, you end up with 10. You only keep the highest number, not adding.
Also remember you can target and destroy the turret (though it also gets temp HP).
