I’m new to the game and have very little practical knowledge involving special mechanics. I want to make an original feeling shadow monk because that shadow step ability sounds so fun. I like everyone, burnt myself out trying to find a way around the,”shadow step” drawback of needing to be in darkness. I’ve seen the many ways people try to get around it and some, while effective, feel too edgy and overused. I was thinking about an earth ganasi-shadow monk the idea was to earth bend an arena or create a large hole underground and once there, i could just go wild. Something tells me this is probably not possible so if anyone could let me know that would be great. Also if you have any suggestions for weird shadow monk buils let me know!
Kinda tricky, not only do you have to be in shadow (low light works too), but you have to be able to see where you want to go. So lowering yourself into a hole may fix one part and break the other.
I am playing a shadow monk in AL. I haven't gotten the shadow step feature yet, but I have been thinking of how to take advantage of it. Ideas:
Get devil's sight to be able to see in magical darkness, then cast darkness when I need a point to step to or from. Devil's sight also has a lot of other practical uses.
Get prestidigitation and use it to extinguish light sources.
Use a large cloak as a portable shadow. Basically, pull the cloak around you so your body is in darkness and step out from within it, leaving the cloak behind. Only really works once per encounter, but very cinematic.
First, see if your DM will just allow you to use a large parasol or something in combat to cast your square into dim light.. if so, no need to reach for any complicated build tricks or go over the top with Darkness/Devil's Sight cheese.
MoveMold Earth just shovels around loose piles of dirt (though it does so very quickly). A five-foot deep hole in the earth (if the surrounding terrain allows for "loose earth" to be moved) may or may not be deep enough to create any dim light in the hole. The loose mound of earth you excavated is unlikely to be steep/tall enough to create any dim light next to it. And then there's the issue of maintaining line of site to your desired target point...
A warlock splash is the usual way to reliably teleport, but the Twilight Cleric can do it too in a different way. Houseruling a parasol item or letting cloaks work how DxJxC describes may be not entirely RAW-ish, but your DM may see it as a desirable alternative to you feeling the need to splash a multiclass Warlock that you don't really want to play just to chase one invocation.

I'm going to make this way harder than it needs to be.
