So I am confused....all the discussions I have seen or heard about is to the classes and subclasses and nothing mentioned about core mechanics. Are they literly going to just reprint the books with class updates and new art?
I can think of several updates to rules ( Pathfinder 2e provides a good blueprint to some changes that could be made) but I am worried that all we are gonna get is 5.5 edition with minor tweaks to the classes.
There were a lot of proposed rule changes regarding things like unarmed strikes, grapple/shove, exhaustion, weapons, long/short rest effects, making character inspiration a more core part of the game, lots of changes to spells including new spells. Plus the sneak peak at some changes/additions to the DMG with Bastions. And we've seen nothing concrete about what might change in the monster manual, though we can make a small handful of inferences just based on the way certain class features are changing.
It's still 5e in the sense that all the same systems are still in place, they just might work a little differently. There won't be a need for a new character sheet like there would be in an official edition change.
All the UA playtests are still available on D&DBeyond under Sources > Unearthed Arcana. The bulk of the content is race/class changes, but the Rules Glossary at the end of each one touches on the miscellaneous changes they were thinking about.
I was really hoping they would address things like long rests..action economy etc...we will see I guess
There aren’t any radical changes to those, but some of the proposed rules do have some impacts. E.g., for action economy, Second Wind would no longer be usable with the Magic Action. Also, being able to use the Nick Weapon Mastery frees up the Bonus Action for two-weapon fighters. You can now equip or unequip a weapon each time you make an Attack, but dropping weapons counts as unequipping, rather than being a free action.
what exactly is " unequipping"? did I miss something?
Currently, you can draw or sheathe one weapon in your turn. If someone wants to attack with one weapon then draw and attack with another weapon in the same turn, they might drop the first weapon. According to the UAs, sheathing, stowing or dropping a weapon are all regarded as unequipping the weapon, so dropping no longer gets round the restriction. However, you can now equip (draw, pick up) or unequip (sheathe, drop) one weapon each time you attack (so each individual attack, rather than per Attack action).
