I was running a game recently and the characters ran into a room where two Cloud Giants were sleeping in bed. One of the characters cast Hold Person. This spell requires a Wisdom saving throw by the target. But would it automatically succeed because the target is asleep? Obviously physical attacks succeed automatically, but this isn't a physical attack. I ended up ruling the targets could make a saving throw (which they succeeded). But was this correct?
Any attack that hits the creature is a critical hit if the attacker is within 5 feet of the creature.
Per the above, only STR and DEX saves are affected. This can seem a little counter-intuitive, but consider how broken Sleep would be if it was a no-save way to make targets so vulnerable to a follow-up save.

RAW being asleep means you have the unconscious condition, which applies the following:

Also, Giants aren’t Humanoids. They need Hold Monster
