I'm new to DND and also DND Beyond. I am using the creation tool and I can see my lvl 8 character's max HP. Do you guys usually go with max HP for the character or do you change the current HP? If so what methods do you use? I bought the DND starter kit and have been just using the max HP.
Right. So I guess the dndbeyond character tool takes the average method but gives the ability to override hp should the players decide to roll instead..

Yep. Fixed max HP is the average, manual max HP lets you add what you roll. Both methods are described in the PHB and basic rules.
Thanks for having me and reading my message. I just noticed I replied to a year old thread..
I got to play a 7th level barbarian as my first character. As I understood barbarian first level HP is always the max (12) result on the hit-die (1D12). I added that to a manual roll of 6D12 (for every level after 1). I manually rolled a 40 The character has a constitution bonus of +2 so at level 7 that means 14
Am I correctly calculating my manual HP at 12+14+40 = 64? Which is one below "Total average HP".
If I had used the fixed (uses 7 as average) setting I would've gotten 68; 12+(6*7)+14 = 68. Same as "Total Fixed Value HP" If I had maxed out every d12 at 12 I would have gotten the "Total Possible HP" of 96
I think I did everything as I'm supposed to. What I think the UI lacks is a message, hint or or pre-added 1st level max value. In my case "12" to the manual roll. Otherwise people might just roll 7D12 and miss out on those precious few HP points.. I understand people ideally read the PHB front to back, but having your first character and game and using D&dbeyond, beautiful as it is, is still overwhelming. The HP mechanic is very good, but I feel some small improvements might make it even better for new players like me.

Thanks in advance!
When you take damage you lower current HP, and when you heal you increase it.
If you mean do we use fixed or manual max HP, I prefer fixed.
Ohhh thank you so much!!
As a DM, when my players gain a level I let them choose whether they want to use the average or roll, I have yet to have someone not roll.

Gotcha. I did read it but it's nice to validate with others who've played the game longer than myself thanks!

I think DDB adds CON automatically.
It does.
