Hey! My bro and i just bought the Players Handbook, as well as the Waterdeep: Dragon Heist book, and we're struggling to wrap our heads around the mechanics of the game, and the character creation step. We seen conflicting information online about my following question, but couldn't find a clear answer, so now im here! haha
We seen a video about Subclasses which were not listed in the Players Handbook, and wondered how we could apply the game rules to Subclasses that are not listed. Unlike the Eldrich Knight Subclass in the Players Handbook, the College Of The Sword Subclass (which we heard about from a youtube video) was not listed. And when researching, we found that there were 100s of different Subclasses.
tldr, Are subclasses not listed in the Players Handbook considered cannon? And if so how can we play them without the list of spells and skills which are listed for lets say, the Eldrich Knight Subclass.
Short version Yes and No. There are additional books that have official subclasses, and there is homebrew which are player made unofficial options.
If you are looking into buying more official subclasses, most of them are in Xanathars Guide to Everything, and Tasha's Cauldron of Everything. (There are a couple less popular ones in sword coast adventurers guide but most of them have been updated/reprinted in the other two I mentioned).
I believe your example of the swords bard is in xanathars guide. If you look at the market you can click on books and decide if you want to just buy a portion of the book (such as subclasses) or the whole thing. There are also additional official spells spread through a few books, once again most of them are in Xanathars Guide to Everything, and Tasha's Cauldron of Everything.
Ahh i see, we seen that book at our local game store. I guess once we actully play we will get a better understanding of the game, perhaps im thinking about this too mechanically when its supposed to be more story based. Thank you!
All good, I hope you enjoy the game :-D, another tip for when you are researching books. If you look at the sources menu on this site, its split between adventures and sourcebooks. Sourcebooks tend to have more Character options, optional rules, Magic items, ect. Adventures have a story that you can run your players through and may have a few spells/magic items thematic to the specific adventure (Such as an iconic bit of equipment from a high level NPC in the story).
All that said, nothing is stopping you from making your own story using content in the players handbook, and the basic rules on this site. I find it helpful to use the Encounter builder on this site and it has a filter that will allow you to limit its options to the Basic Rules.

Also eldritch knight and arcane trickster just use the wizard spell lists (with magic school limitations), they don't have their own lists.
