Im looking for an RP idea to make a character, who according to backstory would have no wizard training, a level 3 wizard. So I was thinking having him find a Sentient spellbook that gives him said wizardly abilities. I was toying with the idea of a possessing spirit/symbiotic being imparting magical knowledge but thematically, as much as I wish I didn't, does feel more in the sorcerer's wheelhouse especially with the aberrant mind sorcerer. So I was thinking instead of that making it something tied to the nature of wizards and giving it more of a teacher-esque semblance. That would also cut down on DM shenanigans. So the spellbook would would be more like Bob the skull from the Dresden Files than Lash from the Dresden Files. I could actually make it Bob the skull, or a skull, instead of a spellbook... But that do you all think from a lore standpoint? The game is based in Faerun.
It's not like we haven't had floating skull companions before. Morte from Planescpae Torment, for example. While Planescape isn't technically Forgotten Realms, it really is only a door away. The right door at least.
Seems a lot like Shiro from Nier Replicant, who is literally a sentient magical grimoire.
The idea of your character being slowly trained by this book which may or may not have a wizard trapped inside it is neat. If everyone at your table is okay, run with it.
Welcome to the elven ( and human) Soulgems. A magical gem storing the personality of a powerful mage along with their spells and passed down (typically in a family) sharing/forcing the knowledge on “deserving” “descendants” . Other similar items include the Blackstaff which holds Khelbin’s persona as well as personas of all his successor “black staffs”. So sure the idea can be worked quite easily into a campaign. Heck Elminster came across one once and wore it to bring it back to the family in Myth Drannor - nearly drove him crazy but …
This troupe worked well for me. I should have said much earlier, the campaign idea is the same as the dnd cartoon/dungeon daddies podcast. A bunch of friends ended up getting transported to Faerun and have to make their way. So I needed an RP idea to give my wizard access to being a wizard without any time intensive wizard training.
