So I was running a Hoard of the Dragon Queen game and my players had just made it to 5th level. They were traveling at night and encountered a bunch of cultists with some mages. By now they had known about the cultists but had not obtained much information about them.
So most of my players decided to disguise themselves as cult members and decided to infiltrate their camp. With disguise kit and deception checks, they managed to get a lot of info and get into the cultist's good graces.
However, one of my players decided that they knew enough and started attacking the cultists. Without telling the other players. My players were very confused and started to fight the nearest cultists which meant they didn't focus on enemies or even the mages. So by the time that it was the turn of the cultists, the mages did aoe damage and the cultists started to chip their hp away.
A bunch of players almost went down but decided to plan out of character. They ganged up on the remaining cultists, especially the mages. A hard encounter almost turned deadly and after all that, my players learned to speak to one another better and to not spread out damage.
