I’m writing a campaign and my idea is to have different types of celestials play into it. However I’m at an utter loss when it comes to knowledge of celestials. Can someone help explain them to me?
Celestials are basically the heralds, servants, messengers & soldiers of the various “good” gods.
Like devils, but on the opposite spectrum, they believe in doing good deeds, and are compelled to be lawful in most cases. They have a strong sense of community, and help each other.
They are created to inhabit the Upper Planes, and are given form & life based on the positive emotions generated by the mortal races.
While many are warriors & heralds…like solars, planetars, or hound archons…there are celestials who are more or less common folk, like you would have on the Material Plane. In many cases, they are the spirits of good people who passed on to the afterlife, and live in the kingdom or plane belonging to their deity.
Other celestials that are native to the planes, and not dead spirits, are creative from raw goodness. Over time, they grow and become more powerful celestials, usually by serving other celestials. In exchange, they are protected & watched over by their chosen shepherd.
Legendary warriors who died noble, glorious deaths are often rewarded by becoming einherjarn, or eternal warriors. They revel and fight within the afterlife, and serve their chosen god as soldiers in their army, if things get bad. If they died, they are reborn after a time. Mostly they served Odin, or were Greek heroes, but since then they have gone on to be dwarves, halflings, and pretty much any of the other races.
It should be noted that these are the realms of the GODS…celestials can quite literally bump into them while traveling around here. They often reside in majestic temples or structures, but these are places celestials can visit. It’s a kingdom with subjects…just bigger, and grander.
Mt. Celestia is a big focal point, as it has numerous levels with different types of heavenly splendor, and should give you an idea of what to expect in these places.
Arborea, most famous for being the realm of elven gods, is also a place of wild, chaotic goodness…if you don’t happen to be terribly lawful.
Check out the “Forgotten Realms Wiki”: it has a huge amount of descriptions of the celestial planes.

He's pretty much got it. I feel like there's a butt ton of research you could potentially do, or you could read the DMG description and fill in the gaps with online resources. Really, since this is your campaign and not a pre-published one (I assume), feel free to write your own lore or make up stuff where parts of it don't make sense to you.
Celestials are basically the heralds, servants, messengers & soldiers of the various “good” gods.
This pretty much sums it up though. Celestials are basically forces for good, inherently good creatures who either work for or are the children of good gods. There are celestials like unicorns, who are sort of like demigod spirits, and then there are angels, like solars and planetars, which are basically soldiers to fight against demons and devils.
There are rare cases featuring "corrupt" angels (such as a level in Undermountain, DotMM, where a corrupted planetar rules over a level of the dungeon, enacting corrupt justice on any who oppose him, even doing so with the help of fiends!)
I also don't know how new you are to DnD, so the whole "write your own" thing may not be as easy. However Wiki and DMG should answer your questions
