Fairly new DM looking to run a homebrew campaign for the first time for my group of 3 to 4. I have run a few oneshots and published adventures for the group in the past but want to try a hand at a homebrew campaign. Looking for some advice to flesh out the concept.
The group is really interested in the fey and would like to see them involved in their campaign. I was thinking of an idea involving a coven of hags/witches to be the main enemy. I want to add some kind of campaign twist that throws them for a loop and had a thought of the BBEG being the head witch betraying the cover for some personal gain. Struggling a little to establish the details of what the coven may be up to or what their goal is or a potential alternative idea for a fey based campaign. I really like the idea of the fey myself because they are neither good or evil so it provides many opportunities for twists and turns. My group don't tend to be the typical hero type and lean more toward the anti hero type which is why I think a fey based campaign would be good because the typical rescue the realm concept doesn't excite them.
I am thinking of utilizing the critical role setting for the base of my campaign but open to other settings. Would definitely like a compenent if the camapaign to take part in the feywild. Hopeing to take the players to level 12 or higher since they have never got the chance to be high level. Would really love to hear any and all input.
One thing that I think may help is if the coven is drawing out magical energy from the Feywild. That could be their goal and if they complete said goal then they do something along the lines of corrupt/destroy the Feywild. In regards to the BBEG idea you mentioned, maybe it is something more powerful disguised as a witch that is running the coven for its own, more evil purposes. Perhaps by draining the Feywild they will get enough magic stored together to take over another plane or location, perhaps they are using it to create a magical item. If you are struggling to figure out specifics of it or maybe events/combats that will occur but aren't necessarily major, one thing I do is a use the encounter creator and just look through different monsters that fit a campaign's setting and try it out against the character's levels to see how it works. Then if I come up with what I think would be a neat encounter I build around it to make it fit into the story. The biggest thing is though that you should play to your strengths. If you are particularly good at one aspect of DMing then you should try to incorporate it in as much as possible to make the experience better for everybody involved.

This more powerful creature disguised as a witch could be one of the Dark Powers. With the Shadowfell and Feywild being near polar opposites, it would be a good opportunity to have the Dark Powers attempt to corrupt the Feywild. The disguised Dark Power could lead the other witches into believing that they are trying to use the Feywild's energy to open portals to the Material Plane and lure humanoids into dark contracts, while the Dark Power has more sinister intentions. Since your characters are more anti-heroes, then perhaps the Seelie or Unseelie Fey could offer a reward to stop the Dark Power. If it comes to the point where the Dark Power's plan is succeeding, some areas of the Feywild could corrupt and contain a piece of a dark domain from the Shadowfell.
