So I'm running a high level campaign where the PCs (Bard(swords), Druid and Wizard) are traveling from world to world fighting baddies who are working to help cults and factions working to support Tiamat/The dragon queen/whatever the local name is. They pop in, deal with the interlopers, resetting the local ballance (but typically leaving the final win for the locals) and then move on. I was thinking I might shunt them into Krynn for a chapter.
I don't know the setting all that well (beyond the recent book and a little Internet reading) so I have some questions I'd like to poll y'all on if you'd be so kind:
1) eventually the PCs will end up using some high level magic (they all have access to 9th level spells at this point), how would the Mages of High Sorcery look on the Bard and the Druid? I figure they might insist the Wizard take the Test of High Sorcery and nominally play by their rules while in their land once discovered, but I'm looking for suggestions as to what they would think of the other two. Would they even be invited to take the test? Would they just be ignored?
2) The campaign chapter will have some downtime segments where they will need to do background research, gather intelligence and such. The Bard (a dragon born) has pondered using true polymorph (becoming human) to go undercover as a stable helper or maybe a want-to-be squire associated with the Knights of Solamnia. Obviously if he is caught in a normal way, it would be bad, even if he's working at something of a common purpose. But what if he is found out because he did something heroic and it just went sideways (say the stable hand jumps in to help defend some injured knights and fights valiantly and epically but gets knocked to 0 HP and thus reverts back to a unconscious dragon born as the battle is won)?
I'm trying to ponder contingencies; the group occasionally leaves me flat footed -- and of course they'd really like to do a chapter on Krynn after seeing the new book. On the bright side, they know about as much as me.:)
Any help/suggestions y'all can provide would be appreciated.
Regarding the Mages of High Sorcery, if your party is at tier 4, the Order is either going to tread very cautiously with them or mobilize an all-the-stops effort to contain them, depending on how they're applying their magic. Druidic magic has similar roots to Cleric magic in 5e, while a Bard is still an arcane caster, so they'd definitely want to put the Wizard and Bard through the trials; Druid I could see going either way.
Regarding the second point, sorry but that's pretty much all up to you, although I'd expect a significantly larger "kill the beast" bloc than not if the populace is aware of the Draconians, regardless of what this individual might have done. After all, he might just be some kind of spy. Although, I'm not actually sure if True Polymorph would drop on 0 HP once you cross the held for one hour threshold.
The arcane casters are probably as powerful as the most powerful magic users on Krynn. I'd guess that the Tower would approach them diplomatically at first, and I think would be hard pressed to demand that they pass the test. Even if they did take the test the WoHS would be hard pressed to create a test sufficiently powerful enough to be meaningful anyway.
As pointed out above, I think one of two directions is most likely. One, that the Tower would be cautious and diplomatic, perhaps curious about the skill and knowledge these travelers possess (maybe there is something to learn?) Or that the relationship would turn into a conflict and become dangerous.
My understanding of draconians is that a few years after the War of the Lance some of them rejected the wickedness and created their own society ( I may be wrong about that). So finding a dragonborn could be instant death or perhaps capture and questioning. Either can lead to a good story.
