So, i want to create a small encounter to learn dnd rules with friends. And i use other boardgame to set up an arena of some kind: the whole idea - learn the combat as your soul possesses corpses to enter the arena. That way you get random character. But there is a chance to create your own if you defeat an enemy with blue crystal on them.
Other pc enters with you (fight them or join forces) as does monster (random card, randomly chosen from monsterbook). The problem is adding other mechanics - I want to show the level progression, not swat them first turn monster will be adjusted to their level ( wound them to have less hit points or bound in some way to decrease attack). And to bring sense to the lore, they can attempt reconnection with a body - opens up abilities, spells that match the level if the soul etc, but with a chance to get kicked out if the body.
But i worry that way we will not be learning dnd but creating our own game (biggest worry that i will be the only one enjoying it or that all added mechanics will stutter the game). Advice?
If you want to learn DND with your friends, my advice is to play DND. Don't homebrew strange/new rules that would slow things down or confuse people - just have the players build a character, and run those characters as a party through a published starter adventure like LMoP or Icespire Peak.

I know what you're thinking: "In that flurry of blows, did he use all his ki points, or save one?" Well, are ya feeling lucky, punk?
If you want to do arena fights to test and learn the combat rules go ahead also. If you want to show progression then you will have to decide xp or milestone. I would limit the monsters in the arena to a CR equal or less than the party. Yes CR has problems.
As to story of possessing bodies it not needed. Just tell your friends you or they are making throw away pcs for training purposes.

I think that sounds like a creative way to learn the rules, or some of the rules, of your choosing, on your terms, with your friends, while having fun. Re: Leveling up: maybe your characters get better at possessing and are ether able to control the bodies that they possess better, or are able to possess more powerful bodies, as they gain experience and are then able to take on more challenging opponents.
If you are worried about not learning D&D, you can either read the PHB (or wait for the 2024 one) or watch videos how to play D&D (I might opt for the 2nd one). If you and your friends happen to create your own game, that would be an amazing outcome! .
Creating your own game - 1) are you talking about creating your own homebrew world to play in? Or, are you talking about creating your own set of rules etc.? Neither are really recommended for beginners as they call for tons of work for no clear end. As beginners your still not sure both of how to play and whether you like the game - so start simple: download the SRD (free) for the basic rules, create some L1 PCs, pick a published starter module and try the game out and see how you like it. You’ll learn the rules and mechanics as you go. If the first couple of sessions seem slow, relax it’s always slow when you’re doing something for the first time. Give yourselves some space for mistakes and the learning curve. Then decide after you’ve finished the module if you want to continue.

No Gaming is Better than Bad Gaming.

Why would it be a bad thing to create your own game?
