Hi there! So I am a new DM and will be running Waterdeep Dragon Heist. One of my characters is playing a human monk who is Shou. He really wants part of his backstory to include some sort of prophecy (the reason he is coming to Waterdeep). I am not really sure what prophecy I can give him that relates to Waterdeep Dragon Heist...I was thinking maybe something with Manshoon or The Cassalanters...but I don't know why a monk from so far away would be interested. Instead, I thought it could be cool to give him a prophecy that ties in to Storm King's Thunder. I am hoping to link the two adventures. Do you have any thoughts, ideas, or tips? I haven't even bought Storm King's Thunder yet...is this too crazy of an idea?
Good news for you! Just take a look at the Force Grey/Grey Hands first faction agent quest: (in a spoiler for those not DMing W:DH)
Mission brief:
“Seek out Hlam, a monk who lives in a cave on the side of Mount Waterdeep. Ask him what he’s heard about threats to the city, but try not to annoy him or overstay your welcome.”
Mission requirement and reward:
Those who climb the mountainside to reach the cave must succeed on a DC 12 Constitution saving throw or arrive with 1d4 levels of exhaustion. Trying to get Hlam (see appendix B) to share information requires a DC 12 Charisma (Persuasion) check. If the check succeeds, he tells the characters, “Evil’s twin hides its face for now. Expect that to change before winter’s end.” (This is an oblique reference to Manshoon.) The characters can descend the mountain safely. Reward: Each Gray Hand character gains 1 renown.
I'm sure you can think of ways other monks will hear about this (The rumor could have come from one of Hlam's students that your player is familiar with, Hlam could've traveled to your player's city and discussed this with them, etc). Now, you can twist that to say any of the villains and it should still work. Not sure if this kills your idea of storm kings thunder, but there's something in W:DH you can give your monk player a bit of a prophecy.
Oh of course! Thank you for the suggestion. This can be changed around to a great prophecy! I'd rather have some prophecy that ties in with W:DH anyway. If you have any more tips on the adventure, I'd love any advice you have.
