At the beginning of my parties quest, one of my party members accidentally saved the life of a kobold. Ever since then he has been following us around and refuses to leave his "master". For a while, we thought of him more as luggage more than anything useful. However, in the last session, he proved his worth by helping us take care of a horde of zombies and the dungeon boss. He did this by almost eating the boss, who had been turned into a frog with a pollymorph spell. The kobold actually ate the guys arm, dropping him to zero hp.
The Dog Who Wants Pets is far and away my players' favorite NPC. He's literally just a stray dog in a small town someone cast speak with animals on and interviewed in an attempt to get information. He's very excitable, measures time in "foods" (e.g., "I saw him three foods ago"), and constantly interrupts himself to ask for pets.
I also have a tiefling smuggler named Vice who is a solid party frenemy. He's a suave, openly flirtatious arcane trickster who will help or hinder the party if the pay is good enough - though he's taken a shine to them because they keep threatening to kill him. He finds it amusing. He's endlessly coy, gives cryptic (if good-natured) hints, and knows absolutely everything about the local black market.
Shago from “Tomb of Annihilation” became a valued companion after we were hired to murder him, felt bad, and decided to have him tag along on our adventures.
Shago came to regret this decision over time.
We also came across a sentient great sword called The Bone-Hewer, a fabled sword of Orcish kings, who constantly referred to itself in the third-person, and it’s absolute love of hewing bones.
It also spoke in the voice of Randy Savage, so our table could not stop laughing.
Played a quick one shot with my children, they were supposed to take on two orcs and an ogre who were guarding some treasure. They ended up making friends with the orcs by offering them pineapples and tuna sandwiches (kids RPing can be fantastic) and so they are now established as their allies for future campaigns. Christened Orcin and Orcfang.
In our last game we also had Atlas the unicorn who rescued the party when they were struggling to finish off some gnolls, and later had to step in when they almost picked a fight with a dragon and the evil wizard Lord Mortdevol.
