my 12 year old needs a patron for his character. Don’t want to use devil inspired. Anything you can think of that may be friendlier to a more youthful audience?
Why use a fiend patron at all? There are a bunch of others. Any of the fiends are at least "devil inspired."
If it has to be a fiend patron...Maybe a really powerful night hag? A pipe-smoking tiger-headed rakshasa? Pinhead from Hellraiser? Evil Clown? Creepy Doctor like in Jacob's Ladder? That weird dude with hand-eyes from Pan's Labyrinth?
Maybe a devil with a particular focus on mischief, trickery, cleverness, stuff like that. One that's evil on paper, but is evil towards evil people to punish them for being evil and reaping their evil souls to join them in the blood war.
Or go for a nice Lucifer (the show) devil, where the devil likes to have a good time and is someone with an unpopular job to do.
Actually, I kinda wanna play a warlock with a party-boy devil...
I'd have gone with maybe a trickster-inspired entity. If your son can relate to something like Loki where there's "fiendish intent", it could belay the smile and nice appearance.
You could argue that night hags are fiend inspired fey. Make his patron is an ancient hag, like Baba Yaga.
She is an ancient and extremely powerful hag (though not a night hag specifically) and you could.easily just pass her off as a very old and powerful witch, or the first witch or something.
Though to be honest, if you're concerned about your child being exposed to those kinds of things, then maybe Warlock was not the best class as Warlocks are my nature darker characters to play.
If you want a fiend that's more appropriate for a younger audience, I'd actually say that devil is the way to go, at least over demons. Demons are chaotic evil, mutated creatures with an uncontrollable bloodlust. Most are more beast than man. Devils, on the other hand, are a lot more organized. They focus more on influencing mortals, corrupting them to evil. If you ignore the horns, hooves, and red skin, they're like less evil politicians.

Yeah I'd go Devil over Demon any day... Devils can make deals with you, but Demons are pretty much chaotic evil nightmares.
This is so true! In fact, a demon probably wouldn't even stop to give you time of day, and even if they care about you at all, it's how much enjoyment they will get out of taring you limb from limb -- slowly!!

A caffeinated nerd who has played TTRPGs or a number of years and is very much a fantasy adventure geek.
Hexblade is fairly "safe" for younger players. No Devils or Demons, just a weirdo Queen who wants you to kill the Undead. And, you can flavor the Invocations and spells so it's not all fire and brimstone.
Reskin the Fiend pact to a Dragon pact, give them Dragons Breath instead of Scorching Ray and just rename some abilities. Maybe change the damage types of their spells based on what type of Dragon the made a pact with. ex( fireball becomes iceball for a white dragon and so on).

I went with Demon -- not a devil, less spooky !
Eh...I dunno.... Demons are way spookier than Devils imho.
How about a great big supernatural clown?
