I have access to a hombrew kitsune race. I'm having trouble deciding her backstory & class. I initially made her a samurai & way of shadow monk, purely out of unleashing my inner weeb. Then someone in my campaign strongly recommended that if I were to multiclass as a monk, I should do way of kensei instead but I don't like how they're purely weapon-based, I like having the ability of being able to fight without a weapon in case my katana or whatever gets loss or stolen. Then I came across the Blood Hunter class & thought about how kitsune in Korean lore are more vampiric compared to Chinese & Japanese because they were believed to seduce young boys and eat their hearts & livers. I even named her Gumi based on the Korean term for kitsune: 구미호 (kumiho/gumiho) But when rereading the race info I don't think that would actually fit and Blood Hunter seems to be too advanced for me. It's seems that this race is best for ranged attacks &/or magic. For her story I have no idea at all. What do you suggest?
I think Way of Shadow Monk combined with Samurai would be a solid choice. I would personally go heavily into the Monk class and only take Samurai up to Level 3, since by then you'll get Action Surge and Fighting Spirit, and you don't really get any more really interesting skills until level 9 or so.
I'd say lean in hard to the Ninja concept. Your character obviously wouldn't announce that they're a ninja... so they would always present themselves in public as a samurai. Maybe your character is posing as an ambassador of some kind, but her real goal is to gather intelligence on and/or assassinate a powerful public figure. Although that also depends on what kind of game you're playing... it's a more lawful adventure maybe she's a runaway ninja trying to escape the lifestyle of being a trained killer.
Keep in mind that your character can be a samurai without taking the Samurai sub-class. Samurai are basically the Japanese version of knights - loyal warriors to a particular vassal or fiefdom and of some socially-recognized noble heritage. If you want her to be a Monk, there are a lot of options. I recommend zeroing in first on what you like about the idea of playing a Kitsune character and get specific. Then pick a class, subclass and then make up a backstory.
There are a lot of manga and probably some manwha with mythic human-animal hybrid characters. Watch a few and write what inspires you. A few questions to possibly ponder while you watch:
* Is the kitsune character memorable for you? What do you like or dislike about that character?
* What is the kitsune's relationship to other kitsune?
* What is the kitsune character's relationship to non-kitsune?
* How does that character's occupation influence their relationship with others?
