This thread is for people to reveal the biggest plot twists they have played in a game of DnD!
what was yours? My first game involved the party coming across a lone knight in the woods, who asked them to help him to defeat a necromancer. After some discussions (and Thoruk, my barbarian, giving him a sausage roll because he looked hungry) we agreed to join him. We fought our way into the tower but he was injured on the way and asked us to go on without him. We made it to the top and faced against the necromancer and defeated him. When we did so, the tower seemed to crumble away around us, and we watched it go from a pristine tower to ruins. We came down to find a skeleton sat where the knight was, and he spoke to us on the wind thanking us for finishing his unfinished business. The party got a variety of enchanted gear, and on his shield (like a plate) was the sausage roll, piping hot and delicious.
I don't really know. As I DM, I love having plot twists, but I think the biggest ones aren't ones that've been revealed to my players yet.

Okay, so story time. I was playing a campaign as a neutral evil wizard of necromancy. The DM gave me an enchanted undead camel that had the same intelligence, and basically acted as a second version of me who could run faster. Later in the campaign, the DM gave me the Book of Vile Darkness. He let me get away from my party to go to my secret lair under the river to read it every now and then, and by the end of the campaign, I had read enough of it to become a lich. So, I did. As did my camel. Now, we had already killed two dragons earlier in the campaign, which my lich camel and I were keeping from rotting so we could make them into dracoliches. So, we did. Once we had the dracoliches, we went ahead and killed a bunch of monsters in the Underdark. We used their corpses as skeletons and zombies in our undead army. Then, we had to take on the party. This was actually really easy, for two liches on dracoliches. We just did enough damage to get them under 100 health before using Power Word Kill. After that, I noticed that in a lich's stat block, there's a spell that allows you to travel to other planes of existence. And so, Immeral, Interplanar Lichlord was born.
TL; DR My neutral evil necromancer became a lich behind the party's back and killed them to death.
I would have to say that divine intervention actually working to separate one of the PCs from the spirit of a redeemed evil paladin was a big plot twist for me, the DM.
Other than that? The fact that two of the PCs' fathers were Grigori Rasputin and Nikola Tesla.
The players were hired to assassinate an evil, tyrannical God-Emperor. It always seemed to be one step ahead of the players. The Senate lived in sheer terror of its power and carried out its will against their own.
The players eventually started to take a closer look at the Senators. The cruel acts decreed by the God-Emperor seemed to benefit the Senators greatly.
After much tail-chasing, they finally found evidence that there never was any God-Emperor, and it was always the Senate as a ruling cabal terrorizing the town.
In a delightful twist, the player had the perfect opportunity to take down the whole cabal, but instead, they got the cabal to expose themselves to the public who, then, proceeded to murder the whole lot of them while the party watched.

One of my PCs was decapitated by a shambling mound. He's going to come back in a couple sessions as a head in a jar mounted on a robot body.
whoah... one of my friends was just decapitated and is now in a jar in a robot body... Nice :)

When I was DMing last year, I had one player that everyone else said was way overpowered and were super frustrated with. He was playing as a monk and bragged to all of the other players about how great he was. So I allowed one of my players, playing as a tortle wizard, to discover a band of loyalty when searching a defeated enemy. After an arcana check, he discovered the rings powers and decided to get rid of our monk. He gifted the ring to him and told him that it had magical powers once he became attuned to it. The monk failed an arcana check to see what powers it had, but trusted that the tortle wouldn't do anything against him. But right after fighting a boss, the monk took a lot of damage. The tortle hit him with a fireball which took him to zero hit points. When he started rolling to making saving throws, I simply texted him a link to the band of loyalty so he could see what happened for himself. I said "ok everybody, you all take a long rest. See ya later, good session" and walked out of the room. The guy playing as the monk just sat there in shock as we all walked out of the room

...Well, that certainly is a plot twist...
